Economic burden of Peste des Petits Ruminants in India: A meta-analysis with probabilistic uncertainty assessment.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an enzootic disease of small ruminants and imposes substantial economic losses. This study estimated the national-level economic burden attributable to PPR in India through meta-analysis based on mortality loss, body-weight loss, treatment cost, opportunity cost of labour, distress sale loss and milk loss (for goats) by systematically synthesizing available evidence. Since several studies reporting per-animal economic losses did not provide measures of dispersion, a reference variability of 15% of the reported loss estimates was assumed for the primary meta-

Incidence of kidney disease in the canine population treated at a small animal hospital in Uruguay.

Kidney disease (KD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in dogs; however, epidemiological data remain limited. This study estimated the incidence of KD and characterized chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) through an observational study of dogs treated at a small animal hospital. A case-control study was subsequently conducted to identify factors associated with KD. Among 2,393 newly registered dogs in 2023, 91 cases of KD were identified, and an equal number of controls were randomly selected. Adjusted odds ratios were estimated using logistic regression models

Association between eosinophil count and metabolically healthy obesity: A cross-sectional study based on NHANES 2005 to 2018.

Eosinophils, a pivotal component of the immune system, are known to contribute to both inflammatory responses and metabolic regulation. Nonetheless, the epidemiological link between eosinophil count and metabolically healthy obesity remains inconclusive. This study aims to examine the potential association between eosinophil levels and the odds of metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). The present analysis utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2018 cycles, enrolling 4594 eligible obese adults. Participants were categorized as metabolically healthy obes

Challenges and Practical Solutions in the Management of Cystic Fibrosis in Resource-Limited Countries: The Indian Experience.

In recent years, it has become evident that there may be a gross underestimation of the true disease burden of cystic fibrosis (CF) in low-and-middle-income countries. Data on incidence of CF in India are sparse, and optimal CF care is impeded by lack of standardized epidemiological data, limited awareness on the disease impact of CF, and inadequate diagnostic and clinical infrastructure to manage CF. Lack of universal neonatal screening, insufficient sweat testing equipment, and expensive genetic testing preclude timely diagnosis and treatment. Restricted access and costs prohibit consistent

In Silico Analyses Suggest That Exercise-Induced Irisin-Mediated Neuroprotection Supports Non-Pharmacological Preventive Strategies for Alzheimer's Disease in Public Health.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia and imposes a high economic and social burden on healthcare systems. In Brazil, the consistent increase in costs associated with AD hospitalizations, coupled with the absence of curative therapies and population aging, reinforces the need for low-cost, broadly applicable preventive strategies. This study investigated the role of irisin, a myokine induced by physical activity, in the prevention of AD, integrating epidemiological and bioinformatic analyses. Public data on the nutritional status of the Brazilian population in the early 200

Prevalence and Epidemiological Characteristics of Mycoplasma synoviae Infection in Chickens in Mainland China.

Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) poses a continuous threat to the poultry industry in Mainland China, yet a comprehensive nationwide assessment remains lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis quantified the pooled prevalence of MS and evaluated key epidemiological characteristics and sources of heterogeneity. Peer-reviewed studies were retrieved from multiple databases, and random-effects models were utilized to estimate and compare pooled seroprevalence and molecular detection prevalence. The results revealed a heavy MS infection burden characterized by a distinct diagnostic disparity: a hi

Temporal Trends and Epidemiological Patterns of Clinically Relevant Microorganisms in a Burn Unit: An 11-Year Retrospective Study from a Tertiary Hospital in Southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Burn patients are particularly vulnerable to microbial colonization and healthcare-associated microorganisms due to extensive skin barrier disruption, prolonged hospitalization, immune imbalance, and frequent invasive procedures. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile and temporal trends of clinically relevant microorganisms isolated from patients admitted to a burn unit over an 11-year period. METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed microbiological records from burn patients at a Brazilian tertiary hospital (2014-2024), including

Creb3l1 Overexpression Improves Flexor Tendon Repair in Aged Rats.

Aging increases tendon injury incidence and poor repair outcomes, but age-related differences in tendon mechanical properties and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We first analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database to characterize the associations between aging and population-level changes in tendon injury burden. We found the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of tendon injuries caused by mechanical force decreased with advancing age, whereas the age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) increased with age, and the years lived with disability (YLDs) due to tendon in

Autoimmune disease-associated lymphomas: research progress and review.

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are strongly associated with a significantly increased risk of lymphoma, with the standardised incidence ratio (SIR) markedly elevated in certain conditions, most notably in Sjögren's disease (SjD) where an SIR as high as 18.8 has been reported. The risk is particularly prominent for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. This review systematically elucidates the epidemiological features, pathological mechanisms, risk factors, and therapeutic strategies of ADs-associated lymphomas. Epidemiological studies have conf

Vascular Mechanisms in the Etiology of Hemifacial Microsomia: A Systematic Review of Epidemiological, Clinical, and Genetic Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is a congenital craniofacial malformation characterized by unilateral hypoplasia of structures derived from the first and second pharyngeal arches. Although the phenotype is well described, the underlying etiology remains incompletely understood. Disturbances in embryonic vascular development have long been proposed as a potential mechanism contributing to the characteristic unilateral craniofacial phenotype. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and

Glyphosate exposure and metabolic syndrome: A scoping review of epidemiological and mechanistic evidence.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate, the active ingredient in many widely used herbicides, is a pervasive environmental contaminant due to extensive agricultural and residential use. Initially deemed safe, emerging evidence suggests chronic glyphosate exposure may impair metabolic health. This scoping review maps the evidence linking glyphosate exposure with metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and related outcomes, integrating findings from human, animal, and cellular studies. METHODS: We reviewed studies published from 2004 in PubMed and Google Scholar that examined glyphosate exposure in

Demystifying the link between periodontitis and oral cancer: a systematic review integrating clinical, pre-clinical, and in vitro data.

Chronic inflammation and microbial dysbiosis have been implicated in the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), particularly oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the progressive destruction of tooth-supporting structures. While periodontitis Has been associated with an increased risk of OSCC in epidemiological and mechanistic studies, the strength of this association is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify this relationship by synthesizing current evidence, includ

Exposure of perfluorohexane sulfonate alters platelet homeostasis: From epidemiological evidence to mechanistic insights.

Increasing evidence indicates that traditional poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may affect platelet function. However, the impact of mixed PFAS exposure on platelets and the specific contributions of each chemical remain unclear. Furthermore, the potential mechanisms involved are largely unknown. Using a combined experimental and epidemiological approach, this study comprehensively evaluated the relationship of PFAS with platelet levels and explored potential mechanisms. Serum concentrations of eight PFAS chemicals and complete blood counts were measured among 7860 adults in a popula

Outcome of Primary Lung Salivary Gland-Type Carcinoma: A Population-Based Study.

INTRODUCTION: Primary pulmonary salivary gland-type carcinomas are rare malignancies arising from minor salivary gland tissue in the lower respiratory tract. Given their rarity, constituting <1% of all primary lung malignancies, their epidemiological features and outcomes remain poorly documented. This study analyzed data from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to identify primary pulmonary salivary gland carcinomas, including the most prevalent tumor types. METHODS: All patients diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic c

A multivariate analysis on characteristics of hand and wrist tumours: a multiethnic study.

INTRODUCTION: Hand tumours are frequently encountered in clinical practice. However, large-scale epidemiological data of soft tissue tumours in the hand are infrequently published. Epidemiological data provide diagnostic cues to guide the workup and management of hand tumours. Assessing significant independent demographic factors and tumour characteristics associated with hand tumours is essential in health care. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent excision of hand tumours in Singapore General Hospital between 2004 and 2015 was conducted. The data collected included age,

Dimensionality and invariance of ADL, IADL, BI-M2/WG-SS, and GALI in large surveys in France (2008-2014) and implications for measuring disability in epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological investigation and surveillance of disability requires well-constructed, invariant, and, if possible, exchangeable measures. However, the current or recommended measures have not been thoroughly investigated with respect to these issues. Here we examined the dimensional structure and invariance of four measures across sociodemographic groups: Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), Budapest Initiative Mark 2 (BI-M2) and Washington Group on Disability Statistics Short Set (WG-SS), and Global Activity Limitation Indicator (
