Kaposi's sarcoma of the vulva: a case report and brief review.

A report of a case of Kaposi's sarcoma of the vulva is presented. A complete response of the tumor was obtained after 1 treatment cycle using a triple-drug chemotherapy regimen of actinomycin D, vincristine, and 5-(3,3-dimethyl-1-trazeno)imidazole-4-carboxamide (DTIC). Death occurred due to severe erythema multiforme, which was indirectly related to a complication of the chemotherapy.

[A boy with a skin lesion after a henna tattoo].

An 11-year-old boy got a temporary black henna tattoo while on vacation. After 3 days he developed an itching rash at the site of the tattoo, that spread to the rest of the body. This was most likely an allergic contact dermatitis and erythema exsudativum multiforme minor caused by the often high concentrations of the strong sensitizer para-phenylenediamine (PPD) in the henna.

Immune complexes in the reactive inflammatory vascular dermatoses.

Immune complexes are formed by the interaction of antigen and antibody. When these complexes are deposited in tissue, they activate complement that is chemotactic to neutrophils. Neutrophil release of lysozymal enzymes results in destruction of tissue. In the skin this destruction manifests itself clinically as vasculitic lesions. Occasionally other clinical lesions, such as urticaria, erythema multiforme, and so forth, may be a manifestation of immune complex disease.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae-Induced Rash and Mucositis: Clinicopathologic Characterization of 11 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma pneumoniae -induced rash and mucositis (MIRM) is a mucocutaneous eruption affecting children and young adults with re … S: The majority of MIRM cases demonstrated histopathologic features indistinguishable from those of erythema multiforme or SJS/TEN, with the exception of a neutrophil-rich lichenoid infiltrate observed in a small subset of cases. MIRM is essentially synonymous with erythema multiforme major associated with M. pneumoniae infection. Correlation with clinical and serolo …

Stevens-Johnsons syndrome or drug-induced lupus - a clinical dilemma: A case report and review of the literature.

Tumor necrosis factor inhibitors are the first biological agents used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to have yielded satisfactory results in terms of clinical improvement and radiologic progression, but they are also associated with the possibility of occurrence of a number of autoimmune systemic events [drug-induced lupus (DIL), vasculitis, sarcoidosis] and localized adverse events [uveitis, psoriasis, interstitial lung disease, erythema multiforme including the major form Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)]. During treatment with TNF inhibitors, many patients develop positivity fo…

The spectrum of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis: a clinical classification.

The nosology of severe bullous erythema multiforme (EM), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) remains controversial. To conduct a prospective case-control study of the etiologic factors of these diseases, we needed to define criteria for classifying the cases. After having reviewed photographs of the skin lesions of more than 200 patients, an international group of dermatologists proposed a classification based on the pattern of "EM-like lesions" (categorized as typical targets, raised or flat atypical targets, and purpuric macules) and on the extent of epiderma…

Polymorphous light eruption.

Polymorphous light eruption (PLE) is a common photodermatosis of unknown etiology. It afflicts mainly fair-skinned patients, with a preponderance of young females. There is, however, no absolute restriction as to age, sex, or race. Clinical variants include the papular, vesiculo-bullous, and hemorrhagic variety, as well as plaque, erythema multiforme-like, and insect bite (strophulus)-like types. Skin lesions appear only in certain exposed areas hours or a few days after intense sunshine, and are nearly always monomorphous in the same patient. The rash subsides spontaneously within several day…

Cutaneous id reactions: a comprehensive review of clinical manifestations, epidemiology, etiology, and management.

Id reactions are a type of secondary inflammatory reaction that develops from a remote localized immunological insult. To date, id reactions caused by various fungal, bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections have been reported. Superficial fungal infections, especially tinea pedis, are the most common cause of id reactions. Id reactions exhibit multiple clinical presentations, including localized or widespread vesicular lesions, maculopapular or scarlatiniform eruptions, erythema nodosum, erythema multiforme, erythema annulare centrifugum, Sweet's syndrome, guttate psoriasis, and autoimmune …

Cutaneous manifestations of fungal infection.

Fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue may result from either direct contact or inoculation injury (primary infection) or from hematogenous spread from a primary focus of disease (secondary infection). The parainfectious lesions of erythema nodosum and erythema multiforme are manifestations of the host's immune response to the invading fungus, particularly Histoplasma capsulatum and Coccidiodes immitis. In some patients, skin lesions may be the only sign of a systemic fungal infection, and prompt recognition of these lesions may facilitate early diagnosis and treatment. This arti…

Urticaria multiforme: A report of 5 cases and a review of the literature.

Urticaria multiforme is a cutaneous disorder that affects infants and small children. It is characterized by large, annular urticarial plaques with a violaceous center and is frequently accompanied by fever. Urticaria multiforme follows a benign, self-limiting course, but the striking appearance of the lesions can cause alarm and considerable anxiety among parents. We present 5 cases of urticaria multiforme seen in our hospital over a period of 18 months. All the cases were preceded by an infection of the upper airways or otitis, and they were all empirically with amoxicillin. It is important
