[3-dimensional craniofacial computerized tomography].

Computed tomography allows today to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) images from axial scans. The authors report their experience in cranio-facial pathology achieved in two Departments of Radiology (University of Trieste, Italy and University of Stanford, California). 3D images have been realized using two different softwares, one of which allows to reconstruct both soft tissue and bone structures. The applications in maxillo-facial traumas, cranio-facial malformations and head tumours are discussed. 3D images turned out to be very useful for the optimal visualization and for the spatial dem

Childhood sledding injuries.

Sledding is only rarely thought of as a potentially dangerous childhood activity. However, serious injuries and occasional deaths do occur. A review of patients 18 years old and younger admitted to a pediatric trauma center following a sledding accident from 1991 to 1997 was conducted. By design this study was expected to identify the most seriously injured patients. Twenty-five patients were identified, all but four younger than 13. Seventeen were boys. The mechanisms of injury were: collision with stationary object, 15; sled-sled collision, 1; struck by sled, 2; going off jump, 3; foot caugh

Fiberoptic laryngoscopy findings in pediatric burn patients referred to the pediatric emergency department.

INTRODUCTION: Facial burn injuries can compromise the airways in pediatric patients. Because prompt assessment of airway safety is a must, most assessment algorithms rely mainly on clinical judgment. There is little data on the value or utility of Fiber Optic Laryngoscopy (FOL) as an ancillary test. METHOD: This retrospective analysis covered data from patients' charts at Hadassah Medical Center of all children aged 0-18 years who presented at the pediatric emergency department for facial burns and underwent FOL from January 2010 to December 2022. RESULTS: Over this 12-year period, 149 child

Visible injury patterns in relation to reported sexual acts after sexual assault: a retrospective cohort study.

Sexual assault may result in visible anogenital and extragenital injuries, but the absence of such findings remains a major challenge in for … Reported anal sexual violence and oral sexual violence were significantly associated with anal and facial injuries, respectively; however, corresponding injuries were still absent in most cases. In multivariable logistic regression, the number of reported sexual acts was the only variable independently associated with absence of corresponding visible injury. The …

Characteristic of Maxillofacial Injuries Resulting from Interpersonal Violence Between 2021 and 2025: Retrospective Study from Poznan, Poland.

Background: Interpersonal violence is one of the most common causes of maxillofacial injuries. These injuries can range from minor soft-tissue injuries to serious, life-threatening conditions. This is particularly important when injuries occur in an exposed and vulnerable area of the body, such as the facial area. This study aimed to analyse the types of maxillofacial injuries, assess a profile of a typical victim of violence and determine the circumstances of the injury. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on the clinical data of patients managed for maxillofacial trauma resulting f…

Facial trauma in a softball player.

Facial trauma frequently results in fracture of the facial bones. A blowout fracture involves the eye orbit and usually transpires when the object hitting the eye (eg, baseball, softball, fist, elbow) is larger than the orbit itself. The mechanism of injury will provide the physician with a clue to the diagnosis. Prompt recognition of any significant complications, proper imaging, and referral to an ophthalmology specialist are usually required. Facial reconstruction by a plastic surgeon may also be necessary.

Experimental considerations concerning the use of stem cells and tissue engineering for facial nerve regeneration: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Peripheral nerve trauma results in functional loss in the innervated organ, and recovery without surgical intervention is rare. Many surgical techniques can be used for repair in experimental models. The authors investigated the source and delivery method of stem cells in experimental outcomes, seeking to clarify whether stem cells must be differentiated in the injured facial nerve and improve the regenerative process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The following key terms were used: nervous regeneration, nerve regeneration, facial nerve regeneration, stem cells, embryonic stem cells, fetal

Expression of aquaporin 2 following facial nerve crush in rats.

CONCLUSION: We demonstrated an early increase in aquaporin 2 (AQP2) expression in a motor nerve (extratemporal facial nerve, FN) following acute peripheral compression (crush), concomitant to effective development of motor dysfunction (facial palsy). The early increase in AQP2 expression that occurred concomitantly with the appearance of a deficit in a peripheral motor nerve suggests that this protein is involved in the physiological events associated with post-injury edema, similar to the already demonstrated behavior of AQP4 in the central nervous system (CNS). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this st

Exacerbation of facial motoneuron loss after facial nerve transection in severe combined immunodeficient (scid) mice.

The immune system functions to protect an organism against microbial infections and may be involved in the reparative response to nerve injury. The goal of this study was to determine whether the immune system plays a role in regulating motoneuron survival after a peripheral nerve injury. After a right facial nerve axotomy, facial motoneuron (FMN) survival in C.B-17 (+/+) wild-type mice was found to be 87 +/- 3.0% of the unaxotomized left side control. In contrast, facial nerve axotomy in C.B-17 (-/-) severe combined immunodeficient (scid) mice, lacking functional T and B lymphocytes, resulted

Age-Related Patterns of Traumatic Facial Fractures in the Appalachian Tri-state Area: A Five-Year Retrospective Study.

Introduction Traumatic facial injuries, leading to facial fractures represent a significant subset of traumatic events, with age emerging as a crucial determinant influencing both their etiology and outcomes. Understanding the age-related patterns of traumatic facial fractures is essential for developing targeted prevention and management strategies. In this context, the Appalachian tri-state area stands as an underexplored region concerning this issue, necessitating comprehensive research to elucidate the nuances of age-related traumatic facial fractures within this geographic context. Method…

[Effect of mailuoning injection on calcitonin gene-related peptide expression in facial nerve of rabbits with facial spasm].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of Mailuoning injection (MLN) in protecting facial nerve from injury. METHODS: The New Zealand white rabbit model with facial spasm was established by compressing superficial temporal artery to make artificial demyelinated lesion of the main peripheral facial nerve trunk. The successful establishment was confirmed by using electrophysiological technique to determine abnormal muscle response (AMR) which is a characteristic for facial spasm. MLN was injected continuously through ear marginal vein for 2 weeks. The change of CGRP expression in facial nerve
