Frequency of Consumption of Food Groups and Cardio-Metabolic Risk Factors: A Genetically Informative Twin Study in Sri Lanka.

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) globally have undergone rapid urbanisation, and changes in demography and health behaviours. In Sri Lanka, cardio-vascular disease and diabetes are now leading causes of mortality. High prevalence of their risk factors, including hypertension, dysglycaemia and obesity have also been observed. Diet is a key modifiable risk factor for both cardio-vascular disease and diabetes as well as their risk factors. Although typically thought of as an environmental risk factor, dietary choice has been shown to be genetically influenced, and genes associated with th

A popular fermented soybean food of Northeast India exerted promising antihyperglycemic potential via stimulating PI3K/AKT/AMPK/GLUT4 signaling pathways and regulating muscle glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes.

This study examined the antidiabetic efficacy of popular fermented soybean foods (FSF) of Northeast (NE) India. Results showed that among different FSF, aqueous extract of Hawaijar (AEH), a traditional FSF of Manipur, NE India, significantly augmented glucose utilization in cultured myotubes treated with high glucose (HG, 25 mM). Furthermore, AEH also upregulated glucose uptake, glucose-6-phosphate level, and phopho-PI3K/phospho-AKT/phospho-AMPK/GLUT4 protein expression in HG-treated myotubes. In vivo studies demonstrated that AEH supplementation (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg body weight/day, oral ga

Asperuloside Enhances Taste Perception and Prevents Weight Gain in High-Fat Fed Mice.

Asperuloside is an iridoid glycoside found in many medicinal plants that has produced promising anti-obesity results in animal models. In previous studies, three months of asperuloside administration reduced food intake, body weight, and adipose masses in rats consuming a high fat diet (HFD). However, the mechanisms by which asperuloside exerts its anti-obesity properties were not clarified. Here, we investigated homeostatic and nutrient-sensing mechanisms regulating food intake in mice consuming HFD. We confirmed the anti-obesity properties of asperuloside and, importantly, we identified some

Effect of Food and an Animal's Sex on P-Glycoprotein Expression and Luminal Fluids in the Gastrointestinal Tract of Wistar Rats.

The rat is one of the most commonly used animal models in pre-clinical studies. Limited information between the sexes and the effect of food consumption on the gastrointestinal (GI) physiology, however, is acknowledged or understood. This study aimed to investigate the potential sex differences and effect of food intake on the intestinal luminal fluid and the efflux membrane transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp) along the intestinal tract of male and female Wistar rats. To characterise the intestinal luminal fluids, pH, surface tension, buffer capacity and osmolality were measured. Absolute P-gp e

Cardiometabolic Profiles and Change in Neighborhood Food and Built Environment Among Older Adults: A Natural Experiment.

BACKGROUND: The association between neighborhood environment and health may be biased due to confounding by residential self-selection. The displacement of disaster victims can act as a natural experiment that exposes residents to neighborhood environments they did not select, allowing for the study of neighborhood effects on health. METHODS: We leveraged data from a cohort of older adults 65 years of age or older living in Iwanuma, Japan, located 80 km west of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Surveys were conducted 7 months before the disaster, as well as 2.5 and 5.5 years a

Alterations in Metabolism and Diurnal Rhythms following Bilateral Surgical Removal of the Superior Cervical Ganglia in Rats.

Mammalian circadian rhythms are controlled by a master pacemaker located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), which is synchronized to the environment by photic and nonphotic stimuli. One of the main functions of the SCN is to regulate peripheral oscillators to set temporal variations in the homeostatic control of physiology and metabolism. In this sense, the SCN coordinate the activity/rest and feeding/fasting rhythms setting the timing of food intake, energy expenditure, thermogenesis, and active and basal metabolism. One of the major time cues to the periphery is the nocturnal melatonin, wh

Food contamination as a pathway for lead exposure in children during the 2010-2013 lead poisoning epidemic in Zamfara, Nigeria.

In 2010, an estimated 400 to 500 children died of acute lead poisoning associated with artisanal gold mining in Zamfara, Nigeria. Processing of gold ores containing up to 10% lead within residential compounds put residents, especially children, at the highest risk. Principal routes of exposure were incidental ingestion and inhalation of contaminated soil and dusts. Several Nigerian and international health organizations collaborated to reduce lead exposures through environmental remediation and medical treatment. The contribution of contaminated food to total lead exposure was assessed during

Hypothalamic CaMKKβ mediates glucagon anorectic effect and its diet-induced resistance.

OBJECTIVE: Glucagon receptor antagonists and humanized glucagon antibodies are currently studied as promising therapies for obesity and type II diabetes. Among its variety of actions, glucagon reduces food intake, but the molecular mechanisms mediating this effect as well as glucagon resistance are totally unknown. METHODS: Glucagon and adenoviral vectors were administered in specific hypothalamic nuclei of lean and diet-induced obese rats. The expression of neuropeptides controlling food intake was performed by in situ hybridization. The regulation of factors of the glucagon signaling pathwa

Hormonal and dietary characteristics in obese human subjects with and without food addiction.

The concept of food addiction (FA) is a potentially important contributing factor to the development of obesity in the general population; however, little is known about the hormonal and dietary differences between obesity with and without FA. Therefore, the aim of our study was to explore potential biomarkers, including various hormones and neuropeptides, which regulate appetite and metabolism, and dietary components that could potentially differentiate obesity with and without FA. Of the 737 adults recruited from the general Newfoundland population, 58 food-addicted and non-food-addicted ove

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH) in Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua: tissue distributions, early ontogeny and effects of fasting.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is classically known for its role in regulating teleost fish skin color change for environmental adaptation. Recent evidence suggests that MCH also has appetite-stimulating properties. The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) peptide family has dual roles in endocrine control of reproduction and energy status in fish. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) are a commercially important aquaculture species inhabiting the shores of Atlantic Canada. In this study, we examine MCH and GnRH transcript expression profiles during early development as well as in central and per

Systemic α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone administration decreases arthritis-induced anorexia and muscle wasting.

Rheumatoid cachexia is associated with rheumatoid arthritis and it increases mortality and morbidity. Adjuvant-induced arthritis is an experimental model of rheumatoid arthritis that causes anorexia and muscle wasting. α-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) has anti-inflammatory actions, and it is able to decrease inflammation in several inflammatory diseases including experimental arthritis. In this study we tested whether systemic α-MSH treatment is able to ameliorate cachexia in arthritic rats. On day 8 after adjuvant injection control and arthritic rats were treated with α-MSH (50 μg/rat

The anorectic hormone amylin contributes to feeding-related changes of neuronal activity in key structures of the gut-brain axis.

Amylin is a peptide hormone that is cosecreted with insulin from the pancreas during and after food intake. Peripherally injected amylin potently inhibits feeding by acting on the area postrema (AP), a circumventricular organ lacking a functional blood-brain barrier. We recently demonstrated that AP neurons are excited by a near physiological concentration of amylin. However, the subsequent neuronal mechanisms and the relevance of endogenously released amylin for the regulation of food intake are poorly understood. Therefore, we investigated 1) amylin's contribution to feeding-induced c-Fos ex

Leptin and its role in the central regulation of reproduction in cattle.

Leptin, a 16kDa product of the adipose obese (ob) gene, has been shown to contribute to the regulation of energy metabolism, feeding behavior, and reproduction in several monogastric species, including humans. Recent reports have provided evidence that the leptin gene is functionally relevant in cattle and sheep, and may contribute to an array of important reproductive events, including puberty. Leptin gene expression and circulating leptin increase markedly during sexual maturation in heifers reaching puberty during late spring or early summer. In addition, serum leptin concentrations increas

Migraine triggers in Asian countries: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide. Clinical characteristics of migraine may be somewhat different across ethnic groups. Although factors such as stress, lack of sleep, and fasting are known as migraine triggers, the discussion about geographical differences of migraine triggers in Asia is lacking. METHODS: In this study, we performed a narrative review on migraine triggers in Asia. We searched PubMed for relevant papers published between January 2000 and February 2022. RESULTS: Forty-two papers from 13 Asian countries were included. Stress and sl

Effects of Cocaine and Fasting on the Intake of Individual Macronutrients in Rats.

Obesity is a significant problem, and increased food intake is thought to underlie much of the increase in obesity levels. Recently, there has been much discussion and debate about the role of the individual macronutrients, carbohydrates, fat, and protein, in the rise in obesity levels and its associated comorbidities, but overall there has been little study of how different treatments and stimuli that affect feeding impact the intake of individual macronutrients. In these studies, we tested whether two treatments leading to altered feeding, acute cocaine injection and an acute fast, different
