This study relates to a method for evaluating the degradation efficiency of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs through a Fenton reaction, using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 100, 250, and 500 mg/L, ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) at 458 mg/L Fe(2+) and pH values of 3, 4.5, and 6. Iron sulfides are known to be efficient scavengers of heavy metals. In this study, Hg(II) sorption was investigated using synthetic nanocrystalline mackinawite (a disordered phase) as a function of initial Hg(II) concentration [Hg(II)]0, initial FeS concentration [FeS]0, total chloride concentration CIT, and pH. The effect of recombinant human (r-Hu) erythropoietin (Epo) (300 IU/Kg per week for 4 weeks) was studied in healthy preterm infants (n = 14) fed human milk with additional milk protein and high doses of iron. The controls (n = 15) were in themselves a study group and were used to follow the natural course of anaemia of prematurity on such nutrition. Efficacies of ferroplex, conferon, and feramide in the treatment of pregnant patients with iron-deficiency anemia were compared. Ferroplex proved to be the most effective. Therapy with this drug brought about the best correction of iron metabolism parameters. Feramide was the least effective agent. The efficacy of iron preparations depends on the ionic form of this metal and the combination of iron with the agents conducive to its better absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.

16 patients with recurrent staphylococcal furunculosis but without anaemia had significantly lower serum iron concentrations than normal laboratory reference values, 8 controls with single furuncles, or 10 controls with acne conglobata. There were no significant differences in serum glucose or iron binding capacity between the groups studied. Furunculosis resolved after 3-4 weeks' treatment with iron supplements in all but 1 patient. The relation between iron and susceptibility to infection is unclear, but merits further investigation.
