The prevalence and diversity of intestinal parasitic infections in humans and domestic animals in a rural Cambodian village.

In Cambodia, intestinal parasitic infections are prevalent in humans and particularly in children. Yet, information on potentially zoonotic parasites in animal reservoir hosts is lacking. In May 2012, faecal samples from 218 humans, 94 dogs and 76 pigs were collected from 67 households in Dong village, Preah Vihear province, Cambodia. Faecal samples were examined microscopically using sodium nitrate and zinc sulphate flotation methods, the Baermann method, Koga Agar plate culture, formalin-ether concentration technique and Kato Katz technique. PCR was used to confirm hookworm, Ascaris spp., Gi

Innate and adaptive type 2 immune cell responses in genetically controlled resistance to intestinal helminth infection.

The nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus is an excellent model for intestinal helminth parasitism. Infection in mice persists for varying lengths of time in different inbred strains, with CBA and C57BL/6 mice being fully susceptible, BALB/c partially so and SJL able to expel worms within 2-3 weeks of infection. We find that resistance correlates not only with the adaptive Th2 response, including IL-10 but with activation of innate lymphoid cell and macrophage populations. In addition, the titer and specificity range of the serum antibody response is maximal in resistant mice. In susceptible stra

Helminth coinfections mitigate clinical, parasitological, and immune outcomes in Mozambican children with malaria.

BACKGROUND: Clearance of Plasmodium falciparum infection requires a TH1 immune response with production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, IgG1, and IgG3 responses. In contrast, infections with helminths are dominated by TH2/Treg immune responses characterized by production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, IgE, and IgG4, which could potentially interfere with malaria outcomes and immune responses. METHODS: We recruited 441 malaria-symptomatic children aged 2-10 years attending two hospitals in the Manhiça District (Mozambique) and assessed infection by rapid antigen diagnostic test, microscopy, an

Gastrointestinal protozoan and helminth parasite infections in captive chameleons in Germany.

Within lizards, chameleons (family Chamaeleonidae) represent a distinctive and highly specialized clade of insectivorous reptiles. Chameleons have become more popular as reptile pets in recent years worldwide, due to their feasible husbandry and attractiveness. To date, not only reptile pet numbers but also health-compromising endoparasite infections are rising. In the current study, we analyzed a total of 670 faecal samples of 25 different chameleon species kept as pet animals all over Germany. In total, 223 animals (33%) were found to harbor gastrointestinal parasites. In total, 10 different

Prevalence of hookworm infection and its proportion among pregnant women with intestinal helminth infection in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hookworms are the most common soil-transmitted helminths in tropical and subtropical regions. Although infection with hookworms is a principal cause of maternal anemia, there is limited consolidated evidence on pooled prevalence and its proportion among intestinal helminths infections in pregnant women in Ethiopia. This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of infection with hookworms and its proportion among intestinal helminths in pregnant women in Ethiopia. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Articles published

Helminths of zoonotic importance in Tayassuidae and Suidae in Brazilian Midwest: risks for human and domestic animal health.

Common peccaries (Tayassu pecari), wild boars (Sus scrofa) and collared peccaries (Dicotyles tajacu) are species that have gained attention in Brazil because of their close relationship with human beings, their influence on the environment and the parasitic fauna they host, which is common in free-ranging animals. In this study, we obtained the carcasses S. scrofa (n = 4), T. pecari (n = 12) and D. tajacu (n = 1) that were killed by hunting (only wild boars), or by being run over or burned. The animals were necropsied and searched for parasites. The parasites found in the gastrointestinal trac

Innate Immune Response to Helminth Infections.

Helminths are the most common infectious parasites of humans, causing a global burden of disease, exceeding malaria and tuberculosis in developing countries. Helminth parasites have coevolved with humans and thus are quite well adapted to survive and flourish in them. The immune response induced by the parasite is predominantly pro-inflammatory, a Th1-mediated response involving antigen-presenting cells with elevated IgE and eosinophilia. At the later stage, the parasite is capable of polarizing the Th1 response to the Th2 response, which becomes favorable for their survival for a longer perio

Low prevalence of helminth infection in Ugandan children hospitalized with severe malaria.

Co-infection by intestinal helminths and Plasmodium spp. may be common in endemic communities. In 2003, Uganda instituted a national deworming program, with anti-helminth medication provided twice annually to children 6 months to 5 years of age, but few follow-up studies have been conducted. Several studies have identified a relationship between helminth infection, Plasmodium spp. infection and malaria severity. However, the relationship is not well defined, and results are inconclusive. We analyzed 177 stool samples from a cohort of children with severe malaria enrolled in two hospitals in Ug

The Impact of Rhinovirus, Syncytial Respiratory Virus and Helminth Infection on the Risk of New-Onset Asthma and Other Allergic Conditions-A Systematic Review for the EAACI Guidelines on Environmental Science for Allergic Diseases and Asthma.

This systematic review evaluated the association between lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in infancy with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus (RV) or infestation with helminths and the risk of developing asthma and allergic diseases. The risk of bias was assessed with ROBINS-E, and the certainty of evidence (CoE) with GRADE. Meta-analysis applied a random-effects model. RSV LRTI is likely associated with an increased risk of developing asthma by age 7 (OR 3.02, 95% CI 2.23-4.09; I2 = 98%; moderate CoE). The impact on wheezing, atopic dermatitis (AD), and allergic rhinitis is

Helminth control practices used by equine keepers in France: a national survey.

In light of the increasing reports of anthelmintic (AH) resistance in equids, a national survey on helminth control practices was distributed to 42 528 keepers. A total of 4 344 responses was obtained. Respondents implemented preventive pasture practices with varying frequency according to the age of the animals, such as pasture rotations (78.1-80.6 %), excrement removal from pastures several times a year (15.9-27.2 %) and/or mixed or rotational grazing with ruminants (14.5-18.1 %). A majority of keepers routinely used AH treatments even though they did not perceive any major risk to the healt

Metazoan parasites of three new world vultures (Aves: Cathartiformes) from Chile: a parasitological survey of understudied raptors.

Vultures are key species in ecosystems, limiting the spread of infectious diseases while scavenging carcasses. However, they are also the most threatened avian group with several conflicts with livestock farming, hunting, poisoning and intoxication with pesticides, lead and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Still, they represent a understudied group related to parasitological surveys, particularly in the Neotropics. This study aimed to characterize the metazoan parasitic fauna in three species of New World vultures (NWV): Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura), Black vulture (Coragyps atratus) a

Molecular evidence on phenotypic variation in the poorly known acanthocephalan species Rhadinorhynchus cololabis Laurs & McCauley, 1964 (Echinorhynchida: Rhadinorhynchidae).

Acanthocephalans of the genus Rhadinorhynchus parasitize various marine fishes worldwide. However, the true diversity of Rhadinorhynchus is still unclear. In this study, we found an example of phenotypic variation in trunk spines of the poorly known rhadinorhynchid species R. cololabis Laurs & McCauley, 1964. According to the number and distribution of trunk spines, the present specimens of R. cololabis can be divided into two distinct morphotypes, which may erroneously be recognized as distinct taxa in the absence of molecular data. However, the Assemble Species by Automatic Partitioning (ASA

Intestinal parasites in dogs and their association with clinical manifestations of canine visceral leishmaniasis.

Dogs are companion animals commonly present in spaces shared with humans. However, this close contact may facilitate the transmission of zoonoses, such as canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Additionally, dogs are potential hosts of endoparasites that can influence the clinical manifestations of CVL due to immunological interference occurring in parasitic coinfections. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of endoparasites in domestic dogs seropositive for CVL and associate their clinical manifestations with the presence of intestinal helminths. We analyzed 47 seropositive dogs (51.0

LIFE CYCLE VARIATION AND HOST-PARASITE INTERACTIONS OF FOUR CONGENERIC SPECIES OF TURTLE ACANTHOCEPHALANS.

Turtle acanthocephalans in the genus Neoechinorhynchus have complex life cycles and are thought to involve an ostracod intermediate host and a turtle definitive host. For Neoechinorhynchus emydis, an additional snail paratenic host is part of its life cycle. However, how snails become infected and whether other species of Neoechinorhynchus can be found in snails remains unclear. This study was conducted to understand the survival, development, and host use of 4 species of turtle acanthocephalans (Neoechinorhynchus chrysemydis, N. emydis, Neoechinorhynchus emyditoides, and Neoechinorhynchus pse

Epidemiology and diversity of gastrointestinal tract helminths of wild ruminants in sub-Saharan Africa: a review.

This review summarises studies on distribution, diversity, and prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infections in wild ruminants in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that 109 gastrointestinal tract (GIT) helminth species or species complexes were recorded in 10 sub-Saharan African countries. South Africa reported the highest number of species because most studies were carried out in this country. Eighty-eight nematode species or species complexes were recorded from 30 wild ruminant species across eight countries. The genus Trichostrongylus recorded the highest number of species and uti
