Altered performance in a rat gambling task after acute and repeated alcohol exposure.

RATIONALE: A bidirectional relationship between alcohol use disorder (AUD) and deficits in impulse control and decision making has been suggested. However, the mechanisms by which neurocognitive impairments predispose to, or result from AUD remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to gain more insight in the effects of alcohol exposure on decision making and impulse control. We used two modified versions of the rat gambling task (rGT) that differ in the net gain and the punishment magnitude associated with the different response options. METHODS: In experiment 1,

Posttraumatic stress disorder comorbid with major depression: factors mediating the association with suicidal behavior.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to determine if patients with a history of major depressive episode and comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have a higher risk for suicide attempt and differ in other measures of suicidal behavior, compared to patients with major depressive episode but no PTSD. In addition, to explore how PTSD comorbidity might increase risk for suicidal behavior in major depressive episode, the authors investigated the relationship between PTSD, cluster B personality disorder, childhood sexual or physical abuse, and aggression/impulsivity. METHOD: The subject

Pharmacotherapy of Disruptive Behaviors in Children with Intellectual Disabilities.

Disruptive behaviors are a class of predominantly externalizing behaviors that include physical aggression, property destruction, temper outbursts, verbal aggression, and some forms of self-injurious behaviors. Externalizing behaviors are also major components of disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, trauma-related and stressor-related disorders, intermittent explosive disorder, personality disorders, and other neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Disruptive behaviors and associated disorders are among the most frequent reasons

[Hypersexuality in Parkinson's Disease].

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often develop hypersexuality. Hypersexuality occurs in impulse control disorders (ICD), which are caused by dopamine replacement therapy. Hypersexuality becomes a burden for patients, their spouses, and caregivers and worsens their quality of life. Hypersexuality occurs in approximately 3-8% of patients with PD and tends to occur in young male patients. Other risk factors for hypersexuality in PD include cognitive impairment, a history of depression or pathological gambling, and impulsive or novelty-seeking personality traits. Dopamine agonists are more l

Investigating the interplay between gaming disorder and functional impairments in professional esports gaming.

The relationship between Gaming Disorder (GD) and the experience of functional impairments has received considerable theoretical attention in the recent past and current diagnostic approaches underscore the centrality of functional impairments as a requirement for GD diagnosis. However, there is limited empirical evidence illuminating the interplay between GD and functional impairments, particularly among specific vulnerable groups. The present study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating an English-speaking sample (N = 5198) comprising an age- and gender-matched group of Professional Gamer

Altered delay discounting in neurodegeneration: insight into the underlying mechanisms and perspectives for clinical applications.

Steeper delay discounting (i.e., the extent to which future rewards are perceived as less valuable than immediate ones) has been proposed as a transdiagnostic process across different health conditions, in particular psychiatric disorders. Impulsive decision-making is a hallmark of different neurodegenerative conditions but little is known about delay discounting in the domain of neurodegenerative conditions. We reviewed studies on delay discounting in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and in patients with dementia (Alzheimer's disease / AD or frontotemporal dementia / FTD). We proposed t

Treatment effects of therapeutic interventions for gaming disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The prevalence of gaming disorder is assumed to be between 2%-5%. The treatment effect of different therapeutic interventions of gaming disorder has not been studied extensively. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to identify all intervention studies on gaming disorder with a control group, determine the effect of the interventions, and examine moderators. Studies applying a therapeutic intervention and using an appropriate comparison group were identified by searching electronic databases, previous reviews, and reference lists. Data on type of treatment, name of outcome measureme

Koopman-based Impulsive Model Predictive Control of BCG Immunotherapy.

Bacillus of Calmette and Guerin (BCG) is the most effective immunologic treatment for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer by stimulating the immune response of patients. The therapeutic performance of BCG treatment is limited by the dosing scheme, which is difficult to design due to nonlinear dynamics and constraints in the pharmacodynamic model. Here we present a computational method that combines linearization, impulsive control, and constrained optimization to design optimal drug dosing. We do so by first adopting Koopman theory to map the nonlinear pharmacodynamic model into linear space. T

Correlates of externalizing psychopathology in incarcerated men.

Externalizing traits are extremely costly for society and disproportionately prevalent among incarcerated individuals. The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) is an empirically derived classification system that approaches psychopathology dimensionally and was developed in response to critiques of current diagnostic classification systems. The Externalizing Spectrum Inventory-100 item version (ESI-100) is an assessment of externalizing problems that fits within the HiTOP framework and characterizes dimensional externalizing traits. The present study aimed to replicate prior resear

The Role of Trait Impulsivity in the Associations between Rumination and Alcohol-Related Outcomes.

Background/Purpose: Emerging adults engage in high rates of alcohol consumption, which contribute to negative alcohol-related consequences and alcohol-related aggression. Rumination, or repetitive thinking about negative experiences, predicts greater negative alcohol-related consequences and alcohol-related aggression. Mechanisms of these associations are not well understood. We examined whether impulsivity mediates the effect of rumination on alcohol-related outcomes. We also tested an alternative model in which impulsivity moderates the effect of rumination on these outcomes. Methods: In a c

Hypersexuality in neurological diseases: do we see only the tip of the iceberg?

The purpose of this commentary is to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying hypersexuality and its manifestation in neurological diseases through a meta-analysis. Studies were identified by searching on PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane databases. All results of each database between 2014 and 2020 were evaluated for possible inclusion. After an accurate revision of complete manuscripts, forty articles satisfied the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Data from our meta-analysis indicated hypersexuality to be a frequent sexual disorder in patients with neurological disorders, espe

Association of impulsivity, physical development, and mental health to perceptual-motor control after concussion in adolescents.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) can affect multiple domains including impairment in perceptual-motor control (PMC) in adolescents, potentially increasing subsequent injury risk. Research suggests that impulsivity, physical development, and mental health may be associated with PMC after SRC, but researchers have yet to examine this association. Adolescents (12-18y; n = 48) within 21 days of SRC were compared to 20 healthy adolescents with no concussion history using the Perception-Action Coupling Task (PACT), Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS), Pubertal Development Scale (PDS), Generalized Anxiety

Stressful life events and gambling: The roles of coping and impulsivity among college students.

Substantial research has found a robust relationship between stressful life events and increased negative health outcomes and a greater predisposition to various forms of substance use and gambling behavior; however, less is known about the individual factors that explain this relationship. The present study examines the moderating factors of gambling to cope and individual impulsivity factors (e.g., perseverance, premeditation, and negative urgency) on the relationship between stressful life events over the past year and gambling problems among a sample of college students. Participants inclu

Longitudinal Network Structure and Changes of Clinical Risk and Protective Factors in a Nationwide Sample of Forensic Psychiatric Patients.

In this study, we investigated network configurations of 14 Clinical risk and protective factors in a sample of 317 male forensic psychiatric patients across two time points: at the time of admission to the forensic psychiatric centers (T1) and at the time of unconditional release (T2). In terms of network structure, the strongest risk edge was between "hostility-violation of terms" at T1, and between "hostility-impulsivity" at T2. "Problem insight-crime responsibility" was the strongest protective edge, and "impulsivity-coping skills" was the strongest between-cluster edge, at both time point

Dietary intake of tryptophan tied emotion-related impulsivity in humans.

Emotion-related impulsivity, defined as the tendency to say or do things that one later regret during periods of heightened emotion, has been tied to a broad range of psychopathologies. Previous work has suggested that emotion-related impulsivity is tied to an impaired function of the serotonergic system. Central serotonin synthesis relies on the intake of the essential amino acid, tryptophan and its ability to pass through the blood brain barrier. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the association between emotion-related impulsivity and tryptophan intake. Methods: Undergraduate

Impulse control and related disorders in Parkinson's disease: review.

In the past decade, impulse control disorders, punding, and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (which we refer to collectively as disinhibitory psychopathologies) have been increasingly recognized in treated patients with Parkinson's disease. Practicing neurologists must understand these problems to limit potential harm. In this article, we summarize current knowledge regarding these behavioral disorders, including phenomenology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment.
