The specific pathologic processes preceding the onset of irreversible cerebral injury seem to be a combination of several complex mechanisms due to the severity and duration of the insult to the biochemical modifications in the brain. An early diagnosis of the newborn at high risk for brain damage is relevant for preventive programs. Neuroprotective strategies will benefit from the detection of biochemical markers with high reliability and predictability for brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Activin promotes ovarian follicular development, inhibits androgen production and increases FSH and insulin secretion. Follistatin, an activin-binding protein, neutralizes activin bioactivity. Therefore, a decrease in the ratio of activin/follistatin might encourage characteristic features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We investigated whether women with PCOS showed disordered follistatin and/or activin serum concentrations.

The link between a wide range of pregnancy complications and unexplained elevated mid-trimester levels of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) and maternal serum human chorionic gonadotrophin (MShCG), with its subunits, is becoming established. Sertoliform cystadenoma of the rete testis (SCRT) is rare with only 9 cases reported to date in the literature, none with follow-up. Four large genitourinary pathology consult services were searched. We identified 15 cases of SCRT. Men were 21 to 84 years old (mean, 46 y) and had testicular discomfort or mass.
