A cholecystoenteric fistula (CEF) is a rare complication of cholelithiasis with cholecystitis. Cholecystocolonic fistulas (CCFs) account for 8-26.5% of all CEFs. CCFs can cause colonic bleeding, obstruction or perforation, with such complications being mainly reported in the narrower sigmoid colon. Colonic biliary ileus, or obstruction due to the colonic gallstone impaction, is extremely rare in the proximal colon and its best management is yet to be elucidated. We present the case of a 73-year-old male patient with multiple comorbidities and previous abdominal surgeries who presented with hem

An enterovesical fistula (EVF) is an abnormal connection between the intestinal tract and urinary bladder, typically developing with symptoms of pneumaturia and fecaluria. We herein present the case of an 81-year-old man with 10-day watery diarrhea. After ineffective empiric antidiarrheal treatment, computed tomography and cystography revealed EVF and gas in the bladder lumen and within its wall. His diarrhea improved after urethral catheter placement. EVF can occasionally cause diarrhea in a delicate pressure balance between the bladder and intestine. Clinicians should be aware of this unusua

Enteroclysis is rightly included to modern diagnostic methods for detecting damage to alimentary canal. It enables to visualize even small morphological changes on the mucous membrane of intestine, to prove fistulas if present and to evaluate functional changes if correctly applied. It significantly contributes to establishing early diagnosis in affections of the intestine and consequent use of adequate therapy. The authors in their communication summarized their experience, obtained in the examination of one hundred patients. They selected a modified procedure of examination according to Herl

Over the last 10 years, 9 patients treated by surgical procedure for radiation injuries of the bowel were studied with the following conclusions: The damage to the small intestine caused by external irradiation leads to adhesion of the bowel, perforation and postoperative anastomotic dehiscence if the irradiated bowel is used in the anastomosis. Surgical treatment for the small intestine is resection of the damaged loop. In order to determine the extent of the resection it is important that during the operation fibrosis and obstruction of vessels in the submucosa and subserosa is examined by b

BACKGROUND: Intestinal fibrosis, one of the complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is associated with fistula and intestinal stricture formation. There are currently no treatments for fibrosis. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes have been proven to exert inhibitory and reversal effects in IBD and other organ fibrosis. In this study, we explored the role of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (hucMSC-Ex) in IBD-related fibrosis and its associated mechanism to provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of IBD-related intestinal fibrosis.
METHODS:

To investigate the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) following prolonged gastrointestinal disuse due to external duodenal fistula. This retrospective cohort study included adult patients with external duodenal fistula who experienced gastrointestinal tract disuse from January 2018 to January 2024. Patients were monitored until discharge or death. The primary outcome was the occurrence of AAC, while secondary outcomes included its treatment and prognosis. Of the enrolled 133 patients, 59 (44.4%) were diagnosed with AAC. The majority (79.7%) of AAC cas

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformations are a group of rare congenital anomalies affecting the respiratory and upper gastrointestinal tract. The rarity of these cases means their embryological origin continues to be a source of controversy. We present the case of a female infant, born at term with a malformed right arm, an absent right kidney and aplasia of the right lung. Although initially asymptomatic she presented at 5 months of age in severe respiratory distress. An upper gastro-intestinal contrast study demonstrated a right broncho-esophageal fistula. At surgical resection it was discover

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Gallstone ileus is an uncommon complication of cholelithiasis in the elderly with a high morbidity and mortality rate. This study aims to clarify the current surgical management.
METHODS: In a retrospective survey over the past 11 years there were 9 patients with gallstone ileus, all elderly (mean age, 77 years), among 2242 cholecystectomies (0.4%) and 243 operated small intestinal obstructions (3.7%). Urgent laparotomy confirmed gallstone obstruction and a cholecystoduodenal (89%) or cholecystocolonic (11%) fistula. The operation included enterolithotomy alone (3 high-ris

Gall stone ileus is one of the rare complications of patients with cholelithiasis and usually affects elderly females. The usual sites for the stone to get impacted are the distal ileum and ileocaecal valve. Computed tomography (CT) remains diagnostic and surgery is the treatment of choice. A 60-year-old diabetic female, who was diagnosed with gall stone-induced pancreatitis one month ago, presented to the surgical emergency department with complaints of right upper abdominal pain with recurrent vomiting and constipation of five days duration. The patient was managed conservatively. A provisio

Adult ileocecal intussusception due to non-specific inflammation is a rare condition. Intussusception is the intestinal segment telescoping into the adjacent intestinal lumen. Typically, a pathological lesion is discovered with a high percentage of malignancy. Intussusception of the most common ileocolic kind includes the appendix, but it is uncommon for an appendix to serve as the lead point. The patient was admitted to the emergency department with a complaint of acute intestinal obstruction. After getting a diagnostic workup, an exploratory laparotomy was done, and the ileocecal and ascendi

BACKGROUND Endoscopic biliary stent implantation is a recognized and effective method for the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the bile duct and pancreas, ensuring smooth bile drainage. Currently, stent migration is considered a long-term and complex process, and in most cases, stents are removed through endoscopy or expelled from the body through the intestinal cavity. In rare cases, stents lead to formation of duodenocolic fistulas. CASE REPORT We report a case of duodenal colon fistula caused by a biliary stent penetrating the duodenum and entering the ascending colon. We remov

Enterocutaneous fistula is any communication between bowel and skin or atmosphere outside the body. It can be classified by various means by etiology, organ of origin, etc. Enterocutaneous fistula can occur after any gastrointestinal surgery where there is some trauma during surgery or other associated causes such as malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease, foreign body, etc. Enterocutaneous fistula needs a multidisciplinary approach as its management is a very tedious and complex process. Sepsis, malnutrition, and dyselectrolytemia are three key factors during the management of enterocutaneous

BACKGROUND: Enterocutaneous fistula commonly occurs in the post-operative setting. However, a handful of cases have been reported to occur secondary to strangulation of hernia, mostly femoral due to the narrow femoral ring through which this type of hernia passes through.
CASE PRESENTATION: We encountered a case of spontaneous fecal fistula, which occurred in the setting of an incarcerated femoral hernia. The patient did not develop peritonism, or obstruction, throughout the course of the disease. The hernia ruptured on day 7 of incarceration. Exploratory laparotomy under epidural anesthesia

We describe a case of a cholecystoduodenal fistula (CDF) diagnosed using oral contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). CDF is a rare type of biliary-enteric fistulation in which an abnormal communication forms between the gallbladder and duodenum. CDF are usually found in older patients, in the context of chronic cholecystitis, and can be associated with serious consequences. Given the non-specific presentation and limitations of the various imaging modalities, CDF are notoriously difficult to diagnose. CEUS is a recognised technique predominantly deployed for imaging following intravenous adminis

Colonic diverticulosis has continuously increased, noticeably left-sided disease. Colovesical fistula is an uncommon complication of diverticulitis, and its most common cause is diverticular disease. Pneumaturia and fecaluria are commonly related symptoms. We present the case of a 79-year-old woman complaining pneumaturia and fecaluria. Abdominal CT showed a colovesical fistula due to sigmoid diverticulitis. After surgical adhesiolysis between the sigmoid colon and the bladder, the defect of the bladder wall was repaired by simple closure. The colonic defect was treated by segmental resection

The treatment of small bowel fistulas remains a difficult problem. Spontaneous closure rates of 30% are currently being achieved after 4 to 6 weeks of conservative therapy with bowel rest, TPN, octreotide, and control of sepsis. Resection of the fistulous bowel is warranted if fistula closure has not occurred by 4 to 6 weeks.
