Emergency Non-occlusive High Capacity Bypass Surgery for Ruptured Giant Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysms.

AIM: Managing ruptured giant internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms in an emergency situation is very challenging. By reporting two cases, we discuss the role of the Excimer Laser-assisted Non-occlusive Anastomosis (ELANA) technique as an armamentarium for cerebrovascular surgeons dealing with giant ICA aneurysms presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The management of two consecutive patients treated with ELANA bypass during a 6-month period (June- December 2013) for ruptured giant ICA aneurysms in an emergency setting is presented. RESULTS: The two patients

Correlation between refractive error, corneal power, and thickness in a large population with a wide range of ametropia.

PURPOSE: To determine the correlations between mean keratometry (KM), central corneal thicknesses (CCT), and cycloplegic spherical equivalent (SE) in patients with a wide range of ametropia. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the excimer laser surgery database at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute between 1993 and 2008 was performed. This study included 3395 eyes from 1858 subjects. The refractive error ranged from +6.75 to -14.00 D. CCT was obtained either by ultrasound pachymetry or anterior segment tomography. Keratometry was determined using an autokeratorefractometer. RESULTS: In th

Aggressive pterygium growth and corneal scarring after hyperopic photorefractive keratectomy.

PURPOSE: To describe a patient who noticed a corneal growth and accompanying rapid decrease in visual acuity soon after undergoing hyperopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHOD: Interventional case report. RESULTS: A healthy 47-year-old white woman presented with a corneal growth after undergoing PRK. Visual acuity became progressively worse over 2 years. The growth transected the visual axis, measuring 180 μm centrally and 310 μm nasally. She underwent excisional biopsy, application of mitomycin C on the limbus and adjacent corneal tissue, and grafting with cryopreserved multilayer am

A pilot study to assess the efficacy of photodynamic therapy for Japanese patients with actinic keratosis in relation to lesion size and histological severity.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-based photodynamic therapy (PDT) is effective for actinic keratosis (AK); few studies have examined Oriental patients. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of PDT for the treatment of Japanese AK patients classified by lesion size and histological severity. METHODS: Thirty patients with solitary AK lesions were divided into two groups according to diameter: a small lesion group (SL), diameter < or =10 mm and a larger lesion group (LL), diameter >10 mm, and histological severity: Group I (mild and moderate) and Group II (severe

A randomized, comparative open-label study on the efficacy of latanoprost and timolol in steroid induced ocular hypertension after photorefractive keratectomy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of 0.005% latanoprost and 0.50% timolol for the treatment of steroid-induced ocular hypertension (SIOH) after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS: In this comparative, open-label study we enrolled 29 patients who received steroid therapy after PRK and developed intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation within 30 days of treatment. Fifteen were randomized to 0.005% latanoprost (group A) and 14 to 0.50% timolol (group B). IOP measurements were scheduled at 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of therapy. RESULTS; We did not find any real differenc

[Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) after epidemic keratoconjunctivitis].

BACKGROUND: Persistent and recurrent nummuli after epidemic keratokonjunktivitis (EKC) often lead to reduced visual acuity and increased glare. In spite of long-term topical steroid therapy nummuli often recur. We tried to treat persistent nummuli with phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK). PATIENTS: PTK with an excimer laser (193 nm) was performed in 13 eyes of 9 patients with nummuli. The nummuli were observed over 3-72 months (mean: 36 months). Preoperatively, the visual acuity was 0.1-0.9 (mean: 0.39 +/- 0.22) and the brightness acuity test (BAT) was 0.05-0.5 (mean: 0.25 +/- 0.15). Prior to

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of myopic corneal refractive surgery research: from 1979 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Myopic corneal refractive surgery is one of the most prevalent ophthalmic procedures for correcting ametropia. This study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis of research in the field of corneal refractive surgery over the past 40 years in order to describe the current international status and to identify most influential factors, while highlighting research hotspots. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis based on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was used to analyze the publication trends in research related to myopic corneal refractive surgery. Comparison of tear proteomic and neuromediator profiles changes between small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK).

INTRODUCTION: The tear proteomics and neuromediators are associated with clinical dry eye parameters following refractive surgery. PURPOSE: To investigate and compare the tear proteomic and neuromediator profiles following small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) versus laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial with paired-eye design, 70 patients were randomized to receive SMILE in one eye and LASIK in the other eye. Tear samples were collected preoperatively, and 1 week, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively, and were examined for protein

PURPOSE: To investigate the biomechanical effects of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), and keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx) on postoperative corneal biomechanics and visual outcomes using patient-specific finite element simulations. METHODS: A cohort of 30 patients (24 ± 4 years) undergoing PRK, LASIK, or KLEx was modeled using finite element simulations. Patient-specific preoperative topographies informed the creation of surgical models with ablation and lenticule profiles tailored to the correction needs of each patient based on the same th

Femtosecond Laser Flap-in-Flap Technique for Correction of Post-LASIK Myopic Regression.

PURPOSE: To discuss the technique and outcome of what the authors called the "flap-in-flap" technique and report its safety as a procedure for correction of post-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) myopic regression. METHODS: Seven eyes of 4 patients were included in this study. All patients had previously undergone LASIK for compound myopic astigmatism using the Moria M2 micro-keratome (Moria) 8 to 12 years prior to presentation. All had myopic refractive errors at presentation with a spherical equivalent ranging from -1.25 to -3.30 diopters. A new thinner femtosecond laser flap was created

Incorporating Refraction Measurement Error Into Surgery Planning for Corneal Ablation Procedures, Comparing the Flattening and Correction Indices.

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of measurement error on cylinder treatment planning in corneal refractive surgery and to compare the reliability of two indices of cylinder change: the Correction Index, based on the surgically induced astigmatism, and the Flattening Index, based on the flattening effect. METHODS: Preoperative refractions and surgical outcomes were evaluated using a Monte Carlo simulation. Cylinder change was calculated using vector analysis. The initial distribution of cylinder magnitudes was matched to a population sample of 1,000 eyes prior to LASIK. Refraction measurement err
