Comparison of Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract and Conventional Fistulectomy in the Management of Perianal Fistula.

Background Perianal fistula is a chronic anorectal disorder characterized by an epithelialized tract extending between the anal canal and the perianal skin, most frequently developing after cryptoglandular abscess formation. Patients commonly experience persistent discharge, pain, recurrent infections, and impaired quality of life. Although conventional fistulectomy remains an established treatment option, it may result in greater postoperative discomfort, slower wound healing, and potential impairment of continence. The ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) technique has gained ac

Minimally Invasive Suture-crossing Technique for Facial Contour Restoration Using Poly-l-lactic Acid/Polycaprolactone Aptos Threads.

BACKGROUND: Facial aging leads to progressive soft tissue descent, skin laxity, and loss of mandibular definition. Thread lifting has emerged as a minimally invasive approach to reposition and anchor tissues while stimulating collagen synthesis. This study presents a modified technique using Aptos Excellence Visage sutures with a strategic suture-crossing method to enhance cervicofacial contour. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 22 participants who underwent the modified thread-lifting technique for cervicofacial rejuvenation. The procedure involved the insertion of 10 mult…

Study on human thermophysiology and severe-cold protection during physical activity in simulated high-altitude environments.

The unique climate of plateau regions increases the risk of cold-related conditions, such as hypothermia and frostbite. Therefore, it is essential to study and improve severe-cold protective equipment for use in these environments. This research involved an experiment simulating a plateau at an altitude of 4,500 m, with an ambient temperature of -9℃ and 23℃. Sixteen healthy male participants performed two types of physical activities-weighted hiking and heavy lifting-while thermophysiological and subjective thermal responses were recorded, including local skin temperature and thermal sensation…

Musculoskeletal-Modeling-Based, Full-Body Load-Assessment Tool for Ergonomists (MATE): Method Development and Proof of Concept Case Studies.

A new ergonomic-risk-assessment tool was developed that combines musculoskeletal-model-based loading estimates with insights from fatigue failure theory to evaluate full-body musculoskeletal loading during dynamic tasks. Musculoskeletal-modeling output parameters, i.e., joint contact forces and muscle forces, were combined with tissue-specific injury thresholds that account for loading frequency to determine the injury risk for muscles, lower back, and hip cartilage. The potential of this new risk-assessment tool is demonstrated for defining ergonomic interventions in terms of lifting characte…

Three-dimensional topography of facial soft tissues for the safer and effective threading procedures.

INTRODUCTION: To reduce complications caused by the procedure, the target layer for thread lifting should be the superficial fat or superficial musculoaponeurotic system of the face. The aim of this study was to establish the thicknesses of the facial skin and superficial fat using a 3D scanning system to provide basic clinical data for thread lifting. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty fixed Korean and Thai cadavers (male: 17, female: 13) were used. The depths of the skin and superficial fat were measured using a three dimensional (3D) structured-light scanner. Facial images of both undissected an…

Low back pain/prolapsed lumbar intervertebral disc.

Low back pain is common throughout the adult years in both men and women; first episodes most frequently occur among people in their 20s and 30s. Prolapsed lumbar disc most often affects individuals in the age range 25-45 years; prolapses occur infrequently in persons below 20 years or over 65 years. Major risk factors for low back pain in general and for prolapsed disc specifically include frequent lifting of objects weighing 25 pounds or more, especially if the objects are lifted with the arms extended and with the knees straight and if the lifting is done while the body is twisted; exposure…

The hydrodynamic performance of duck feet for submerged swimming resembles oars rather than delta-wings.

Waterfowl use webbed feet to swim underwater. It has been suggested that the triangular shape of the webbed foot functions as a lift-generating delta wing rather than a drag-generating oar. To test this idea, we studied the hydrodynamic characteristics of a diving duck's (Aythya nyroca) foot. The foot's time varying angles-of-attack (AoAs) during paddling were extracted from movies of ducks diving vertically in a water tank. Lift and drag coefficients of 3D-printed duck-foot models were measured as a function of AoA in a wind-tunnel; and the near-wake flow dynamics behind the foot model was ch

Validation of the Borg CR10 Scale for the evaluation of shoulder perceived fatigue during work-related tasks.

Work-related upper extremity disorders (WRUEDs) are highly prevalent and costly. Development of fatigue is thought to be one of the causes of WRUEDs. Perceived fatigue can be assessed with the Borg CR Scale® (Borg CR10). The objective was to validate the Borg CR10 for the evaluation of shoulder perceived fatigue during lifting tasks. Seventy adults in working age performed three rhythmic lifting tasks with two loads (15% and 30% of maximal voluntary contraction). Using generalized repeated-measures ANOVA (Generalized Estimating Equations), statistically significant Task and Load effects (p < 0…

Effects of cognitive demands on postmovement motor cortical deactivation.

Postmovement beta-rebounds induced by different intermovement intervals were investigated using magnetoencephalography in 14 healthy participants to test the hypothesis that postmovement motor cortical deactivation over the primary motor cortex depends on movement-related cognitive demands. Shorter latency and lower amplitude in postmovement beta-rebounds over the contralateral primary motor cortex were noted in the short-movement interval movement (repetitive finger lifting). Greater latency span of postmovement beta-rebounds jittering using single-trial analysis in the long-movement interval…

Impaired anticipatory control of fingertip forces in patients with a pure motor or sensorimotor lacunar syndrome.

We examined planning and execution of precision grasp in eight right-handed patients with a right pure motor or sensorimotor lacunar syndrome after a subcortical stroke and eight age-matched controls as they grasped and lifted an instrumented object whose weight could be varied without altering its visual appearance. Grip (normal) and load (tangential) forces at the fingertip-object interface were measured and the grip force rate (GFR) and load force rate (LFR) were derived. Planning of precision grasp was assessed by measurement of anticipatory scaling of peak GFR and peak LFR to object weigh

Temporal properties of preparation phase for arm-pointing movements in various directions and distances.

In this study, we investigated how the temporal properties of the preparation phase for upper limb movements are affected by the reaching direction and distance. Twelve right-handed participants performed three motor tasks: two types of reaching movements and one finger-lifting movement. The reaching movements were performed from the home position to 15 target locations (five directions and three distances) as quickly and precisely as possible under two conditions: pre-cueing the target to allocate the sufficient time for the motor-planning process before movement initiation, and no-cuing. The…
