Transcriptional profiling of Saccharomyces cerevisiae T2 cells upon exposure to hardwood spent sulphite liquor: comparison to acetic acid, furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural.

Global gene expression was analyzed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae T2 cells grown in the presence of hardwood spent sulphite liquor (HW SSL) and each of the three main inhibitors in HW SSL, acetic acid, hydroxymethyfurfural (HMF) and furfural, using a S. cerevisiae DNA oligonucleotide microarray. The objective was to compare the gene expression profiles of T2 cells in response to the individual inhibitors against that elicited in response to HW SSL. Acetic acid mainly affected the expression of genes related to the uptake systems of the yeast as well as energy generation and metabolism. Furfural

Data-Driven and Molecular Simulation Insights into the Synergistic Mechanisms of Pore Structure and Surface Chemistry in CO2 Capture by Biochar.

The CO2 adsorption performance of biochars is governed by its pore structure, surface chemistry, and adsorption conditions, yet the relative … the distinct adsorption behaviors of representative functional groups. Experimental measurements of lignin-derived biochars were consistent with these findings. This study reveals a pressure-dependent mechanism of CO2 adsorption by biochars, highlighting surface-chemistry control at low pressure and ultramicropore-filling control at higher pressures, pro …

Site-Tailored bimetallic Co-Ce catalyst on N-Doped carbon for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin.

The efficient conversion of lignin-derived oxygenates into fuels and high-value chemicals is pivotal for the development of renewable energy systems. A central challenge lies in the selective cleavage of the inherently recalcitrant C-O bonds in bio-oil model compounds under mild conditions. In this study, a multi-interface Co-Ce catalyst supported on nitrogen-doped carbon was successfully constructed via a bimetallic synergy and metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived strategy. The introduction of Ce exerted a multifunctional synergistic effect beyond that of a conventional promoter, realizing m…

Effect of Delignification Process on the Properties of Barley-Straw Pulp and Paper.

Barley straw represents an underutilized agricultural residue with potential as a supplementary source of papermaking fibers. This study compared nitrate-alkaline, soda, and peracetic-acid delignification processes for the preparation of pulp from barley straw and evaluated the resulting laboratory paper sheets. The raw material was characterized by a cellulose content of 35.84%, an acid-insoluble lignin content of 18.79%, and ash content of 7.65%. Seven pulping variants were assessed in terms of total yield, reject content, Schöpper-Riegler degree, and Kappa number, while the paper sheets wer…

Surveying a Pseudomonas aeruginosa-derived oxidoreductase activity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Flavoprotein monooxygenases (FPMOs) participate in various biological processes, including lignin degradation, natural product biosynthesis, and xenobiotic detoxification. This study aimed to investigate the heterologous expression of FPMO and assess its functional activity by examining its capacity to inactivate ampicillin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In silico analyses were performed to predict the enzyme's secondary and tertiary structures. The target gene was isolated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, cloned into the pET-22b vector, and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 …

Arctigenin as a promising anticancer agent: a comprehensive review of molecular mechanisms across major carcinomas.

Despite the presence of numerous efficacious bioactive compounds, the development of effective cancer therapies remains necessary. Thus, the exploitation of the medicinal potential of bioactive compounds in cancer management has become an urgent demand. Arctigenin (AG), a natural lignin derived from Arctium lappa, not only suppresses the proliferation of diverse cancerous cells, including those in the liver, stomach, lungs, and colon, but also modulates various antitumor, intracellular, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory activities. Arctigenin has also been shown to overcome tumor resistance…

New insights into interfacial dynamics and mechanisms of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter on arsenic redistribution in Schwertmannite.

Biochar is extensively utilized for the remediation of environments contaminated with heavy metals (HMs). However, its derived-dissolved organic matter (BDOM) can interact with iron oxides, which may adversely influence the retention of HMs. This study investigates the effect of BDOM derived from tobacco stalk (TS) and tobacco petiole (TP) biochar on the redistribution behavior of As(V) in acid mine drainage (AMD)-impacted environments, particularly concentrating on the interactions with Schwertmannite (Sch). Results showed that TP-BDOM, abundant in lignin-like compounds, led to a low-amplitud…
