Stochastic modeling of the neuronal activity in the thalamus of Essential Tremor patient.

Several stochastic models, with various degrees of complexity, have been proposed to model the neuronal activity from different parts of the human brain. In this paper, we use an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Process (OUP) to model the spike activity recorded from the thalamus of a patient suffering from Essential Tremor at the time of implantation of the electrodes for Deep Brain Stimulation. From the recorded data, which contains information about the spike times of a single neuron, we identify the model parameters of the OUP.We then use these parameters to numerically simulate the inter-spike interval

From recognition to decisions: extending and testing recognition-based models for multialternative inference.

The recognition heuristic is a noncompensatory strategy for inferring which of two alternatives, one recognized and the other not, scores higher on a criterion. According to it, such inferences are based solely on recognition. We generalize this heuristic to tasks with multiple alternatives, proposing a model of how people identify the consideration sets from which they make their final decisions. In doing so, we address concerns about the heuristic's adequacy as a model of behavior: Past experiments have led several authors to conclude that there is no evidence for a noncompensatory use of re

The lasso--a novel method for predictive covariate model building in nonlinear mixed effects models.

Covariate models for population pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are often built with a stepwise covariate modelling procedure (SCM). When analysing a small dataset this method may produce a covariate model that suffers from selection bias and poor predictive performance. The lasso is a method suggested to remedy these problems. It may also be faster than SCM and provide a validation of the covariate model. The aim of this study was to implement the lasso for covariate selection within NONMEM and to compare this method to SCM. In the lasso all covariates must be standardised to have zero

Models for estimating bayes factors with applications to phylogeny and tests of monophyly.

Bayes factors comparing two or more competing hypotheses are often estimated by constructing a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler to explore the joint space of the hypotheses. To obtain efficient Bayes factor estimates, Carlin and Chib (1995, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B57, 473-484) suggest adjusting the prior odds of the competing hypotheses so that the posterior odds are approximately one, then estimating the Bayes factor by simple division. A byproduct is that one often produces several independent MCMC chains, only one of which is actually used for estimation. We

Characterization of event related potentials using information theoretic distance measures.

Analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) using signal processing tools has become extremely widespread in recent years. Nonstationary signal processing tools such as wavelets and time-frequency distributions have proven to be especially effective in characterizing the transient phenomena encountered in event-related potentials. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of event-related potentials collected during a psychological experiment where two groups of subjects, spider phobics and snake phobics, are shown the same set of stimulus: A blank stimulus, a neutral stimulus and a spider stimu

[Model calculation to explain the BSE-incidence in Germany].

The future development of BSE-incidence in Germany is investigated using a simple epidemiological model calculation. Starting point is the development of the incidence of confirmed suspect BSE-cases in Great Britain since 1988, the hitherto known mechanisms of transmission and the measures taken to decrease the risk of transmission as well as the development of the BSE-incidence in Germany obtained from active post mortem laboratory testing of all cattle older then 24 months. The risk of transmission is characterized by the reproduction ratio of the disease. There is a shift in time between th

Modelling tooth emergence data based on multivariate interval-censored data.

Studies on emergence of (permanent) teeth are published regularly in the dental literature. Besides descriptive statistics (mean or median values) on emergence times, comparisons between boys and girls are of interest. Gender comparisons are intersubject analyses, but also intrasubject questions, like 'Is there a left-right symmetry with respect to the mean (median) emergence times?' are of interest. Studies on emergence times most often are faced with interval-censored data. We will extend a GEE-type test proposed by Huster et al. for bivariate right-censored data to the multivariate setting

Estimating quantitative genetic parameters in haplodiploid organisms.

Haplodiploid organisms (diploid females and haploid males) are genetically distinct in that they have asymmetrical genetic segregation, gene dosage compensation in the haploid male, maternal effects, and a general propensity to inbreed. Taking these characteristics into account, we demonstrate how conventional experimental designs and statistics derived to measure quantitative genetic parameters for diploid organisms can be applied to haplodiploid ones. First, the C matrix of the joint-scaling test is modified to test the additive-dominance model and then the calculations for fractions in the

Rett syndrome: an analysis using Sartwell's incubation period model.

Evidence suggests that Rett syndrome is a genetic disorder; however, an etiologic genetic model has yet to be identified. The purpose of this study was to apply a statistical model, Sartwell's incubation period model, to estimate the incubation period of Rett syndrome and postulate further on the etiology of Rett syndrome. Sartwell's model was used to test the hypothesis that the age of onset of developmental regression distributions approximate a logarithmic normal model and thus the etiologic factors of Rett syndrome occur in utero or prior to conception. Data from three case-series of Rett

Medical image segmentation via atlases and fuzzy object models: Improving efficacy through optimum object search and fewer models.

PURPOSE: Statistical object shape models (SOSMs), known as probabilistic atlases, are popular in medical image segmentation. They register an image into the atlas coordinate system, such that a desired object can be delineated from the constraints of its shape model. While this strategy facilitates segmenting objects with even weak-boundary contrast, it tends to require more models per object to cope with possible registration errors. Fuzzy object shape models (FOSMs) gain substantial speed by avoiding image registration and placing more relaxed model constraints with optimum object search. Ho

The relationship between universal human values and adolescent problem and pathological gambling.

This article derives statistical models relating adolescents' universal human values with their problem and pathological gambling. An adolescent's values are measured by the priority accorded to each value using the Schwartz Values Inventory, whereas problem or pathological gambling, if any, is indicated by his or her answers to the South Oaks Gambling Screen. Among other complex results, statistical analysis suggests that the value subtypes of "non-faith tradition," "faith tradition," and "macro-universalism" and the value type "stimulation" are associated with less problem and pathological g

Analysis of disease severity and mortality prediction using machine learning during COVID-19.

This paper focuses on how machine learning (ML) algorithms and applications have been used to analyze disease severity and mortality prediction in COVID-19 research. In the past, simpler statistical and epidemiological methods were more commonly used by researchers and officials to predict the course of the pandemic. However, in recent years, the limitations, high costs, and time required for medical tests have become significant challenges in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Some improved statistical methods have been used to tackle these challenges, but they have only partially solved the pr

Detecting Visual Field Worsening From Optic Nerve Head and Macular Optical Coherence Tomography Thickness Measurements.

PURPOSE: Compare the use of optic disc and macular optical coherence tomography measurements to predict glaucomatous visual field (VF) worsening. METHODS: Machine learning and statistical models were trained on 924 eyes (924 patients) with circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cp-RNFL) or ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness measurements. The probability of 24-2 VF worsening was predicted using both trend-based and event-based progression definitions of VF worsening. Additionally, the cp-RNFL and GC-IPL predictions were combined to produce a combined prediction. A held-

Seasonal Variation in Neurologic Hospitalizations in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Certain neurologic diseases have been noted to vary by season, and this is important for understanding disease mechanisms and risk factors, but seasonality has not been systematically examined across the spectrum of neurologic disease, and methodologic guidance is also lacking. METHODS: Using nationally representative data from the National Inpatient Sample, a stratified 20% sample of all non-federal acute care hospitalizations in the United States, we calculated the monthly rate of hospitalization for 14 neurologic diseases from 2016 to 2018. For each disease, we assessed seasonal

Information differences across spatial resolutions and scales for disease surveillance and analysis: The case of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Brazil.

Nationwide disease surveillance at a high spatial resolution is desired for many infectious diseases, including Visceral Leishmaniasis. Statistical and mathematical models using data collected from surveillance activities often use a spatial resolution and scale either constrained by data availability or chosen arbitrarily. Sensitivity of model results to the choice of spatial resolution and scale is not, however, frequently evaluated. This study aims to determine if the choice of spatial resolution and scale are likely to impact statistical and mathematical analyses. Visceral Leishmaniasis in

Explicit Scale Simulation for analysis of RNA-sequencing count data with ALDEx2.

In high-throughput sequencing (HTS) studies, sample-to-sample variation in sequencing depth is driven by technical factors, and not by variation in the scale (size) of the biological system. Typically a statistical normalization removes unwanted technical variation in the data or the parameters of the model to enable differential abundance analyses. We recently showed that all normalizations make implicit assumptions about the unmeasured system scale and that errors in these assumptions can dramatically increase false positive and false negative rates. We demonstrated that these errors can be

Comprehensive analysis of multivariable models for predicting severe dengue prognosis: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dengue fever has often been confused with other febrile diseases, with deterioration occurring in the later state. Many predictive models for disease progression have been developed, but there is no definite statistical model for clinical use yet. We retrieved relevant articles through Global Health, EMBASE, MEDLINE and CINAHL Plus. The Prediction Model Risk of Bias Assessment Tool was adopted to assess potential bias and applicability. Statistical analysis was performed using Meta-DiSc software (version 1.4). Of 3184 research studies, 22 were included for the systematic review, of which 17 we

Statin use is associated with lower disease severity in COVID-19 infection.

We aim to study the association of hyperlipidemia and statin use with COVID-19 severity. We analysed a retrospective cohort of 717 patients admitted to a tertiary centre in Singapore for COVID-19 infection. Clinical outcomes of interest were oxygen saturation ≤ 94% requiring supplemental oxygen, intensive-care unit (ICU) admission, invasive mechanical-ventilation and death. Patients on long term dyslipidaemia medications (statins, fibrates or ezetimibe) were considered to have dyslipidaemia. Logistic regression models were used to study the association between dyslipidaemia and clinical outcom

Multiple regression models to predict electrical bioimpedance variables through anthropometric and simple measures in children aged 6-12 years.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity is one of the most common nutritional and metabolic disorders worldwide, affecting all age groups. Multiple regression models can be used to predict bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) variables in various populations. These models incorporate a set of anthropometric and simple measures to improve the accuracy of predicting BIA variables. The goal was to develop and internally validate multiple regression models to predict BIA variables using simple clinical and anthropometric measurements in children aged 6-12 years. METHODS: This study employs an observationa
