INTRODUCTION: Shoulder arthroplasty in the paraplegic patient is a challenging procedure, because of the patients' unique demands on the shoulder. Previous information on the outcomes of this surgery in the literature is quite limited. Our experience in the prosthetic reconstruction of the arthritic shoulder in patients with pre-existing paraplegia was reviewed to define the results and identify any complications or the need for revision surgery.
METHOD: Six patients were identified as eligible for inclusion. One patient had a humeral head replacement (HHR) and the remaining patients total sh

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric patients, especially those under 5 years of age, are at increased risk of laryngeal injury and subsequent posterior glottic stenosis (PGS) after prolonged or repeated intubations. Despite various surgical options, optimal management remains unclear, and restenosis is a common complication. Steroid-eluting stents, such as the Propel™, have shown promise in sinus applications but are underreported in airway stenosis and reconstruction.
METHODS: We present a case of a 2-year-old female with transverse myelitis and neuromuscular respiratory failure with bilateral vocal cor

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein astrocytopathy (GFAP-A) is a novel autoimmune central nervous system (CNS) disorder. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been implicated in various neurological diseases, yet GFAP-A with concomitant Epstein-Barr virus positivity is poorly understood.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 12 patients with concomitant EBV and GFAP positivity admitted between January 2022 and September 2025, and performed a literature review. Clinical, imaging, laboratory features, treatments, and outcomes were evaluated.
RESULTS: In our cohort, the median age at o

Neuromyelitis optica is a rare inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system, most often associated with aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies and, less frequently, with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibodies. AQP4-positive disease is considered an autoimmune astrocytopathy, whereas MOG-positive disease represents an oligodendrocytopathy. Although these entities have distinct pathophysiological mechanisms, rare cases of double AQP4/MOG positivity have been reported, raising specific diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic issues. We report the case of a 48-year-old wo

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is an acquired demyelinating syndrome of the central nervous system mediated by MOG antibodies. Clinical phenotypes include optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. MOG antibody-associated meningitis (MOGAM) is a form of aseptic meningitis characterized by the presence of serum MOG antibodies. Parenchymal lesions are typically absent in MOGAM; however, some cases may progress to MOGAD. Leptomeningeal lesions are rarely detected on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance

Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody-Associated Disease (MOGAD) is a rare acquired demyelinating syndrome manifesting as optic neuritis (ON), transverse myelitis (TM), acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), and brainstem encephalitis. The disease is characterized by serum autoantibodies targeting myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), which is exclusively expressed on central nervous system (CNS) myelin and oligodendrocyte membranes. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models have been instrumental in elucidating how these antibodies trigger complement-dependent c

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2n first appeared in Wuhan, China in 2019. Soon after, it was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. The health crisis imposed by a new virus and its rapid spread worldwide prompted the fast development of vaccines. For the first time in human history, two vaccines based on recombinant genetic material technology were approved for human use. These mRNA vaccines were applied in massive immunization programs around the world, followed by other vaccines based on more traditional approach

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder is an autoimmune disease, rarely presents with antiphospholipid syndrome. Diagnosis and management of NMOSD are challenging in the background of diverse presentations, especially in resource-limited settings.
ABSTRACT: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a progressive demyelinating autoimmune condition resulting from the autoantibodies produced against aquaporin-4 (AQP-4) proteins which are widely distributed in astrocytes in the nervous system. In the setting of NMOSD, it is very crucial to consider other autoimmune d

OBJECTIVE: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune astrocytopathy with evidence of neuroinflammation and demyelination that affects the central nervous system and is mediated by aquaporin-4 (AQP4) immunoglobulin (IgG). AQP4-IgG may also be present in paraneoplastic syndromes secondary to malignancy such as breast cancer.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature were completed using PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases (CRD42022352109).
RESULTS: A total of 12 publications, which included 19 cases, met the inclusion criteria and were asses

Bilateral symmetric striatopallidal calcinosis with or without deposits in dentate nucleus, thalamus, and white matter is reported in patients ranging from asymptomatic, metabolic, toxic, and genetic autosomal dominant, familial or sporadic forms. Of the connective tissue diseases, it has been reported in very few cases in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, many incorrectly labeled as Fahr syndrome without even having hypoparathyroidism. Here we describe a 30-year-old female patient with neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus manifested at diagnosis with mood disorders and anxi

BACKGROUND: Serological antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) are associated with a relapsing autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Initially identified in the context of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, persistent seropositivity of MOG antibodies is now recognized as a variant of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD).
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to describe the epidemiological and clinical features of MOG antibody positive cases and compare our findings with those previously published.
METHODS: This is a retrospective de

OBJECTIVE: Decreased health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in pediatric patients with multiple sclerosis is established, but little research has examined HRQOL in the broader pediatric demyelinating disease population, and predictors of reduced HRQOL are largely unexplored. We sought to (1) compare generic HRQOL and fatigue of pediatric patients with relapsing (i.e., multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica) versus monophasic demyelinating diseases (i.e., acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, clinically isolated syndrome) and (2) examine the extent to w

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not aquaporin-4 (AQP4) gene mutations are related to the pathogenesis of inflammatory demyelinating diseases in the central nervous system. Polymorphisms of AQP4 exons 1-5 were determined by sequencing DNA from 67 patients with central nervous system inflammatory demyelinating diseases, including neuromyelitis optica (NMO), multiple sclerosis, recurrent or simultaneous bilateral optic neuritis, and longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis. A plasmid with the identified new missense mutation was constructed, and human embryonic kidney ce
