Urethral cancer is a rare but aggressive neoplasm. Early-stage distal lesions can be successfully treated with a single modality. Results for definitive radiotherapy using either or both external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy have shown excellent cure rates in men and women. The primary advantage of radiotherapy is organ preservation. Advanced tumors, however, have poor outcomes with single modality treatment. OBJECTIVE: In the last decade several studies have been published using proteomics to unravel molecular pathways and to find biomarkers which can be used for diagnosis and/or prognostication in ovarian cancer. Combined modality therapy is gaining acceptance for treating stage 3 and 4A thymic tumors. Also, specific subsets of stage 2 tumors deserve particular attention. The identification of increasingly powerful prognostic factors has led to sequential modifications of the cutaneous melanoma staging system. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) recently proposed major revision of tumor node metastasis (TNM) categories and stage groupings for melanoma. The authors summarize the main characteristics of this new TNM classification of malignant melanoma. The importance of the novel technique - sentinel node biopsy - in the management of malignant melanoma is discussed.

In this review, current basic and clinical literature that describes innovative strategies for staging diagnosis and management of cancers of the cervix, vulva, and vagina are reviewed. The reviewed literature includes investigations of viral oncogenesis, the role of angiogenesis in tumor development, pretreatment staging, and the emerging role of chemotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced disease.

The noninvasive preoperative assessment of lung cancer is currently based on CT scan. This technique is used to find out the local extension of the tumor and to identify the presence of mediastinal adenopathies by distinguishing as accurate as possible between benign and metastatic adenopathies according to their size. The authors present in detail the method of reconstructing the larynx after extended fronto-lateral laryngectomy using a mucochondrial nasoseptal graft. The method has been used in 61 cases of laryngeal cancer arising not only from the glottis but also from the laryngeal ventricle, the vestibular fold and part of the epiglottis. After describing other reconstruction techniques after vertical laryngectomy the authors point out the advantages of mucochondrial nasoseptal graft.

Carcinoma of the splenic flexure is uncommon and the diagnosis should be kept in mind, particularly in patients with recurring upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Resection is usually possible and operative complications are few. The site of the tumor does not affect long-term survival. Subtotal colectomy with ileosigmoid anastomosis would seem to be a safe method of treating patients with an obstructed carcinoma at that site.

Fifty-two patients with proven esophageal carcinoma underwent thoracic and abdominal computed tomography (CT) prior to treatment. The mediastinum, lungs and abdomen were studied for evidence of direct invasion or metastases. Correlation with surgical findings were available in 15 thoracic and 29 abdominal CT-scans.
