BACKGROUND: Patients with inflammatory rheumatic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica and ankylosing spondylitis are at increased risk of common comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and anxiety and depression which lead to increased morbidity and mortality. These associated morbidities are often un-recognized and under-treated. While patients with other long-term conditions such as diabetes are invited for routine reviews in primary care, which may include identification and management of co-morbidities, at present this does not occur for patien

BACKGROUND: To the authors' knowledge, little is known regarding the rate at which cancer survivors successfully adopt a child or about their experiences negotiating a costly, and perhaps discriminatory, process regarding the prospective parent's health history. The current study describes the results of a learning activity in which nurses contacted an adoption agency to learn more about the process for survivors with the goal of helping nurses provide patients with accurate information for making a well-informed decision regarding adoption.
METHODS: Training program participants identified a

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe the nature of falls in an inpatient traumatic brain injury rehabilitation setting.
BACKGROUND: Falls are the most frequently recorded patient safety incident in the inpatient context. However, higher rates of falls are reported in rehabilitation settings compared to acute care settings. In the rehabilitation setting, patients with a traumatic brain injury have been identified as at a high risk of falling. However to date, research into the nature of falls involving this patient population is limited.
DESIGN: Five-year retrospective cohort study design.

This is the 12th article in a new series designed to provide readers with insight into educating nurses about evidence-based decision-making (EBDM). It builds on AJN's award-winning previous series-Evidence-Based Practice, Step by Step and EBP 2.0: Implementing and Sustaining Change (to access both series, go to https://links.lww.com/AJN/A133). This follow-up series on EBDM will address how to teach and facilitate learning about the evidence-based practice (EBP) and quality improvement (QI) processes and how they impact health care quality. This series is relevant for all nurses interested in

The initial step of blood transfusion therapy is blood type grouping. ABO-mismatch blood transfusion results in serious adverse effects. Several incidents in the process of blood sampling had been experienced in our hospital since 2006 to 2008. Therefore, we have introduced the computed identification system, and the transfusion unit has taken a part of blood sampling. Just after we introduced it in July 2010, only 7% of the doctors and the nurses used the system in blood sampling. Repeated training programs for doctors and nurses on blood sampling procedure improved the utilization to 95%. We

PURPOSE: To address the process of mentoring the advanced practice nurse (APN) and provide suggestions for the formulation, implementation, and termination of the relationship.
DATA SOURCES: Research studies from nursing as well as other disciplines and personal experience as a mentor and protégé.
CONCLUSIONS: Mentoring is a dynamic and complex relationship that can support growth, increase synergy, and develop ways to succeed as an APN. Before entering into the relationship, care should be taken to assure compatibility between the mentor and the protégé. Major pitfalls include poor communic

Advances in healthcare have improved the survival rates of children with serious health problems. Parents, relieved that their child is alive, often face the challenge of caring for a child with a chronic illness and must make healthcare decisions that have life-long consequences. Supporting parents through the decision-making process is a complex challenge for the advanced practice nurse. This article offers an original and dynamic decision-making assessment tool to help the advanced practice nurse provide effective evaluation and appropriate support for the parents. Although transfusion of blood and blood products is often of life-saving benefit for the many patients who receive transfusions every year, it is not without considerable risk. Nurses need to be aware of these risks so that they can respond to patient anxiety about transfusion. This article outlines risks associated with transfusion and the measures taken to minimize them. Attention will be focused principally on the two most significant risks: transmission of serious blood-borne infection and the potentially fatal acute immune haemolytic reaction that can occur if patients receive incompatibl

BACKGROUND: Efficient monitoring of sow nursing behavior is relevant to animal welfare monitoring and management of preweaning mortality (PWM) risk, which remains a significant challenge in intensive swine production systems. Traditional observation methods are labor-intensive and inadequate for large-scale farms, requiring automated solutions. Precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies, particularly computer vision and deep learning models, offer opportunities for continuous monitoring of sow posture–nursing-state classes. The YOLO (you only look once) architecture has demonstrated high a

OBJECTIVES: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction with an unknown precise etiology. Intricate mechanisms underlying the disruption of bidirectional communication between the brain and the gut may influence the severity of symptoms as well as the response to self-management interventions. Management of IBS can be particularly challenging due to recurrent and resistant symptoms to therapeutic approaches. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of nurse-led self-management support on symptom management and self-reported outcomes in people with IBS.
METHODS: I

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is an extensive procedure used to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis, which is either primary or secondary to other cancers (eg, ovarian, colorectal, appendiceal) that have metastasized to the peritoneum. Morbidity, mortality, and quality of life have improved for patients selecting CRS with HIPEC as a cancer treatment. At Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey, an interdisciplinary team was established to plan and coordinate performing this new procedure in the OR. The team created a written protocol for

This retrospective study, performed in 2009, aimed to identify nursing diagnoses and interventions for the care of patients with spinal cord injury. Data were collected from the nursing records of 465 patients with SCI undergoing rehabilitation. The nursing diagnosis Risk for autonomic dysreflexia was identified in 271 clinical records (58, 3%). Approximately 80 patients developed autonomic dysreflexia, with a predominance in young men around 35.7 years old, who had experienced a trauma as the main cause of the injury. Their neurological injury level was at the sixth thoracic vertebra or above

Patients often experience low cardiac output following cardiac surgery and as many as 90% of patients experience a decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and cardiac index (CI). Causes may vary from volume depletion to global myocardial dysfunction. Critical thinking skills, combined with diligent patient monitoring and a knowledge of cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology are required for prompt recognition and treatment of low cardiac output following cardiac surgery.

Because fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), or fetal alcohol effects (FAE), is being diagnosed in growing numbers of children, there is more interest in their common characteristics and how they change throughout childhood. Few longitudinal studies that describe the common childhood course of FAS address appropriate interventions. Some literature exists that describes follow-up and support services needed by these children and their families. This article examines the common childhood course of FAS/FAE and the interventions and services needed to promote positive child and family health.

Examining a patient's lifestyle becomes imperative in a health-promotion and disease-prevention practice. A recently developed, practical lifestyle assessment tool is the Health Risk Appraisal (HRA), which examines the strengths and weaknesses of a patient's health behaviors. An HRA identifies detrimental health practices that predispose a patient to onset of illness. HRA instruments estimate the odds that a person with a given set of characteristics will become ill or die from selected diseases during a specified period of time. The HRA consists of three components: (1) an intake instrument;
