Analyzing the effect of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag on anxiety disorders and health-related quality of life: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders significantly impair the quality of life (QOL). Studies on the effect of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag on anxiety disorders are limited. This study aimed to elucidate the contributions of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag to the prevalence and severity of anxiety disorders in Koreans. METHODS: This study used data of 9,874 Korean adults from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2021-2022. Anxiety was assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, and health-related QOL was measured using the Health-Rel

Hydrosoluble vitamins.

The hydrosoluble vitamins are a group of organic substances that are required by humans in small amounts to prevent disorders of metabolism. Significant progress has been made in our understanding of the biochemical, physiologic and nutritional aspects of the water-soluble vitamins. Deficiency of these particular vitamins, most commonly due to inadequate nutrition, can result in disorders of the nervous system. Many of these disorders have been successfully prevented in developed countries; however, they are still common in developing countries. Of the hydrosoluble vitamins, the nervous system

Gastrointestinal symptoms, gut microbiome, probiotics and prebiotics in anorexia nervosa: A review of mechanistic rationale and clinical evidence.

Recent research has revealed the pivotal role that the gut microbiota might play in psychiatric disorders. In anorexia nervosa (AN), the gut microbiota may be involved in pathophysiology as well as in the gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms commonly experienced. This review collates evidence for the potential role of gut microbiota in AN, including modulation of the immune system, the gut-brain axis and GI function. We examined studies comparing gut microbiota in AN with healthy controls as well as those looking at modifications in gut microbiota with nutritional treatment. Changes in energy intake

[Prevalence of behavioral disorders in the Swiss horse population].

In the Swiss horse population, the prevalence of conspicuous behaviours (behavioural disorders and stable vices) was recorded with a written questionnaire in a representative survey among 1861 horse yards, and the occurrence of the stereotypic behavioural disorders crib-biting, weaving and boxwalking was analysed with emphasis on their association with horse specific (breed, age, sex) and environmental factors (e.g. housing system, nutrition, management and utilisation). 622 horse yards with a total number of 2536 horses answered to the questionnaire, and conspicuous behaviours were described

Health care professionals' views on psychological factors affecting nutritional behaviour in people with motor neuron disease: A thematic analysis.

UNLABELLED: Motor neuron disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive muscle paralysis and typically leads to death within 3 years. As no cure is currently available, symptomatic management is the mainstay of treatment. An important part of this is optimizing nutritional intake with evidence that this may positively affect survival and quality of life. Health care professionals (HCPs) play a pivotal role in nutritional management of people with MND (pwMND) but, to date, their views on the psychological barriers faced by pwM

Eating difficulties in girls with Rett syndrome compared with other developmental disabilities.

Rett syndrome arises from a mutation on the X chromosome and occurs with prevalence in the general population in 1:10,000 women. Its major nutritional consequences require that health providers recognize early signs of eating difficulties and slowing of growth parameters. Retrospective record review of 44 girls, in two equal-sized groups matched by age, showed that the Rett syndrome group was significantly different, with lower body weights, more respiratory difficulties, more gastrointestinal symptoms interfering with eating, more swallowing problems, less self-feeding, and lower texture tole

Comparison of three different nutrition screening tools for pediatric inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of children at risk of developing malnutrition during hospitalization prevents the development of complications. This study aims to determine the malnutrition risk of pediatric inpatients by using three different nutrition screening tools and to evaluate the reliability/sensitivity of the screening tools. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 176 children who were 1-16 years of age and were admitted to the pediatrics service of a second-line hospital. Body weight and height were used to evaluate the nutrition status of children. Age- and sex-specific z-score

Nutritional rickets and vitamin D deficiency in infants, children and adolescents.

Nutritional rickets continues to be a public health problem in many countries despite the presence of cheap and effective means of preventing the disease. Deficiency of vitamin D is associated with rickets in growing children and osteomalacia in adults. Vitamin D deficiency is attributed to a variety of causes including diet, atmospheric pollution, religious practices that restrict sunlight exposure (clothing), geographic latitude and altitude, season, and time of the day. The clinical findings of rickets can vary among stages of the disease. It is recommended that healthy infants, children an

Enteral feeding.

In this review, topics with scientific strength, topical interest, and controversy were selected. Over the past 50 years, malnutrition has become increasingly recognized as a cause of increased morbidity and mortality in hospital patients. From 1970 to 1980, parenteral nutrition was advocated as the most appropriate form of nutritional therapy for hospital patients. Since then, parenteral nutrition has been replaced by enteral nutrition as the best way of delivering nutrients to hospital patients. The timing of enteral nutrition has been debated. Should it be instituted early, within the first

[Excessive dietetic restrictions in children].

Children have specific and increased nutritional requirements in comparison with adults. A rapid growth and an enhanced energy expenditure explain these main differences. Any diet deviation will expose more rapidly to a risk of nutritional deficiency with health consequences. Whenever a diet restriction is required for medical reasons, a particular attention must be paid to the feeding regimen in order to avoid any health problem and mainly growth retardation.

Assessment of the immune and nutritional status of the host in childhood diarrhoea due to cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected microscopically in the concentrated faecal smears (stained by modified kinyoun's acid fast stain) in 13 out of 100 (13 per cent) cases of acute diarrhoea (AD < 2 weeks duration), 7 out of 50 (14 per cent) cases of chronic diarrhoea (CD > 2 weeks duration) and none in 50 age matched controls. The grades of malnutrition of the cases and controls were calculated by the weight for age criteria and the immune status assessed by the levels of serum immunoglobulins and SIgA in duodenal fluids. Malnutrition was observed in 6 out of 13 cases (46.1 per cent) in acut

Severity of meningococcal infections is related to anthropometrical parameters.

BACKGROUND: Invasive meningococcal infections remain an important cause of death in children. In addition, malnutrition has been classically associated with increased severity of infectious diseases. However, in our experience lethal meningococcaemia in clinically malnourished children is extremely rare. Our purpose was to determine whether there is an association between nutritional status and outcome in children with invasive meningococcal infection. METHODS: We carried out an observational study and prospectively determined anthropometrical parameters in 127 children aged 1 month to 4 year

Is there an association between the nutritional status of the mother and that of her 2-year-old to 5-year-old child?

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between the nutritional status of the mother and that of her 2-year-old to 5-year-old child in a rural village in South Africa where there is a high prevalence of childhood malnutrition (in particular, deficiencies of vitamin A and iron) and of maternal obesity. A blood sample and anthropometric measurements were obtained for 118 child-mother pairs. There was a positive mother-child correlation for serum ferritin (R=0.2304, P<0.05) and haemoglobin (R=0.2664, P<0.01) concentrations, respectively. The child of an anaemic moth
