Assessing the impact of air pollution on anemia: a comprehensive review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution and household fuel use may impair hematologic health through inflammation and oxidative stress. We synthesized evidence on associations of ambient/household air pollution with anemia risk and erythrocyte indices. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science (inception-27 September 2025). Two reviewers independently screened and extracted data, and assessed risk of bias using Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. Random-effects meta-analyses pooled risk ratios (RRs) per 10 µg/m3 for particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤10 µm (PM10), ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5)…

Lake Breeze Effects on the Urban Environment in Chicago.

Lake breezes can strongly influence the environment in coastal areas. As the most populous city along Lake Michigan, Chicago frequently expe … ursor emissions and slowing-down reaction rates. In contrast, on average, lake breezes enhance fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations by up to ∼3 μg m-3, due to the accumulation of local emissions within a shallower boundary layer and enhanced partitioning of semivolatile species at lower temperatures. Additionally, we identify 51 weak events during which la …

Assessing the Evidence for Differential Health Effects of Wildfire Smoke Across Fires and Populations: A Critical Review of Recent Studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate the recent literature on differential exposure to and health risks from wildfire smoke across subpopulations, whether wildfire-derived PM2.5 affects health differently from non-wildfire-derived PM2.5, and how wildfire smoke composition affects health. RECENT FINDINGS: We found inconsistent evidence of differential exposure to and health risks from wildfire PM2.5 by population subgroups. This could be due to variation in wildfire PM2.5 infiltration into buildings and ability to take individual protective actions, both of which have been noted to be related to soc

Biochemical properties and vertical distribution of particulate organic carbon in the northern Chukchi Sea.

The vertical dynamics of biopolymeric carbon (BPC) components are essential for understanding their role in the biological pump and carbon cycling. However, little research has addressed their distribution and transformation across the epipelagic, mesopelagic, and bathypelagic zones, particularly in the northern Chukchi Sea. This study investigated the contributions to particulate organic carbon (POC), reduction rates, and vertical distribution of BPC components, including carbohydrate carbon (CHO-C), protein carbon (PRT-C), and lipid carbon (LIP-C), across the Mendeleev Ridge (MR), Chukchi Ba

Aerosol Water Content Drives Changes in Hydroxymethanesulfonate in Beijing Winter from 2015 to 2021.

Hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) is an abundant secondary organosulfur aerosol during winter in the North China Plain, while the variation and affecting factors of HMS with implementing clean air actions remain unclear. Here, we conducted long-term field measurements in Beijing during the winter, including Phase I (2015-2017) and Phase II (2018-2021). Our results showed that HMS concentrations decreased significantly in Phase I, consistent with changes in PM2.5, organic matter (OM), and sulfate, and showed an increasing trend in Phase II in contrast to the decreasing trend of PM2.5, OM, and sulfa

From particulates to pathways: environmental exposures and their impact on Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of cognitive decline and mortality, with its neurobiological mechanisms and etiology still not fully understood. Emerging evidence highlights the significant role of environmental pollutants in AD onset and progression. This review examines the impact of environmental compartments-air, water, soil, and pollutants-on AD pathology. Prolonged exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5), heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic), and engineered nanomaterials (silver, iron oxide, silica) increases AD risk. Additional factors like obesity, smoking, infecti…

The Role of Particle Inhalation in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is currently defined as a progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (ILD) associated with a histopathologic and radiologic pattern of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP). The relationship between IPF and particles is described, and a pathogenesis for the disease is proposed based on an association with these exposures. In clinical studies and epidemiological investigations, the majority of IPF diagnoses are associated with particle exposures. Cigarette smoking presents the greatest particle challenge in any society, and a relationship with IPF has repea

Spatial disparities and environmental justice in PM2.5 exposure among urban E-bike Commuters:A case study of Changsha.

Amid increasing residential segregation, disparities in resource allocation and environmental health faced by vulnerable groups have drawn widespread attention. Electric bicycles (E-bikes), favored by low-income populations due to their affordability, convenience, and eco-friendliness, have gained widespread popularity, particularly in China. However, whether E-bikes can reduce daily air pollution exposure and mitigate associated environmental health inequalities remains unclear. This study integrates land use regression and space syntax to quantify spatial disparities in PM2.5 exposure among

Root cause analysis investigation of visible particulates in therapeutic protein drug products using morphologically directed Raman spectroscopy.

Visible particulate (VP) matter in therapeutic protein drug products (DPs) is a quality attribute that can impact product efficacy and patient safety across the product lifecycle. This study evaluates Morphologically Directed Raman Spectroscopy (MDRS) for detecting and characterizing VPs in therapeutic protein DPs. MDRS combines morphological and chemical analyses, which are essential for root cause analysis (RCA) during incident investigations of VP formation. We evaluated MDRS using polystyrene (PS) microsphere standards, candidate reference materials from the US National Institute of Standa

Geospatial analysis of tuberculosis incidence in relation to socio-economic and environmental indicators in Romania.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is a global public health burden. Romania experiences some of the highest rates of TB compared to other European countries. TB incidence is spatially clustered throughout Romania, and the reasoning behind this is likely linked to various environmental and socio-economic factors. This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution of TB incidence per 1,000 population between 2015 and 2021 and examined its correlation with particulate matter (PM2.5) levels, living conditions, and level of educational indicators. METHODS: TB incidence data from 2015 to 2021 a…

Health burden of sugarcane burning on agricultural workers and nearby communities.

Sugarcane is the most widely cultivated crop in the world, with equatorial developing nations performing most of this agriculture. Burning sugarcane is a common practice to facilitate harvest, producing extremely high volumes of respirable particulate matter in the process. These emissions are known to have deleterious effects on agricultural workers and nearby communities, but the extent of this exposure and potential toxicity remain poorly characterized. As the epidemicof chronic kidney disease of an unknown etiology (CKDu) and its associated mortality continue to increase along with respira…

Connections Between Air Pollution, Climate Change, and Cardiovascular Health.

Globally, more people die from cardiovascular disease than any other cause. Climate change, through amplified environmental exposures, will promote and contribute to many noncommunicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Air pollution, too, is responsible for millions of deaths from cardiovascular disease each year. Although they may appear to be independent, interchangeable relationships and bidirectional cause-and-effect arrows between climate change and air pollution can eventually lead to poor cardiovascular health. In this topical review, we show that climate change and air poll

Exploring the impact of fungal spores from agricultural environments on the mice lung microbiome and metabolic profile.

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) from agricultural environments has been extensively reported to cause respiratory health concerns in both animals and agricultural workers. Furthermore, PM from agricultural environments, containing fungal spores, has emerged as a significant threat to public health and the environment. Despite its potential toxicity, the impact of fungal spores present in PM from agricultural environments on the lung microbiome and metabolic profile is not well understood. To address this gap in knowledge, we developed a mice model of immunodeficiency using cyclophosphamide…

Air Pollution and the Risk of Dementia: The Rotterdam Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution has been suggested to increase the risk of dementia, but studies on this link often lack a detailed screening for dementia and data on important confounders. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of exposure to air pollution with the risk of dementia and cognitive decline in the population-based Rotterdam Study. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2010, we determined air pollutant concentrations at participants residential addresses using land use regression models. Determined air pollutants include particulate matter <10μm (PM10) and <2.5μm (PM2.5), a proxy of …

Comparing "causal" and "traditional" approaches in the association of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution on mortality: How sensitive are the results?

BACKGROUND: Few comparisons between causal inference and traditional approaches have been performed. We applied "causal" and "traditional" methods to investigate the association between long-term air pollution exposure (PM2.5 and NO2) and mortality. METHODS: We analyzed pooled data from eight well-characterized cohorts and one administrative cohort. We defined the generalized propensity score (GPS) as the conditional likelihood of exposure given confounders, and derived corresponding inverse-probability weights (IPW). We applied Cox-proportional hazard models weighted by IPW, adjusted for GPS

Characterization of products formed from the oxidation of toluene and m-xylene with varying NOx and OH exposure.

Aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important precursor of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the urban environment. SOA formed from the oxidation of anthropogenic VOCs can be substantially more abundant than biogenic SOA and has been shown to account for a significant fraction of fine particulate matter in urban areas. A potential aerosol mass (PAM) chamber was used to investigate the oxidised products from the photo-oxidation of m-xylene and toluene. The experiments were carried out with OH radical as oxidant in both high- and low-NOx conditions and the resultant aerosol sample…

Significant contribution of carbonyls to atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) during the winter haze pollution over North China Plain.

Atmospheric carbonyl compounds play significant roles in the cycling of radicals and have exhibited surprisingly high levels in winter that were well correlated to particulate matter, for which the reason have not been clearly elucidated. Here we measured carbonyl compounds and other trace gasses together with PM2.5 over urban Jinan in North China Plain during the winter. Markedly higher carbonyl concentrations (average: 14.63 ± 4.21 ppbv) were found during wintertime haze pollution, about one to three-times relative to those on non-haze days, with slight difference in chemical composition exc…

FDX1 regulates leydig cell ferroptosis mediates PM2.5-induced testicular dysfunction of mice.

Epidemiological studies have established an association between chronic exposure to PM2.5 and male infertility. However, the underlying mechanisms were not fully revealed. In this study, we established mice models exposed to PM2.5 for 16 weeks, and a significant decrease in sperm quality accompanied by an increase in testosterone levels were observed after PM2.5 exposure. Moreover, treatment with ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), a specific ferroptosis inhibitor, effectively mitigated PM2.5-induced testicular dysfunction in mice. And lipid peroxidation and ferritin accumulation were found to be significa
