Biodiversity of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in phytotelmata from Car Nicobar Island, India.

The Culicidae mosquito family breeds in various natural and artificial water bodies. Phytotelmata are plant structures that hold water and are used by many mosquito species during their life cycle. Mosquitoes are disease vectors, and phytotelmata play an important role in harbouring them. Investigating these phytotelmata will facilitate to develop appropriate site specific vector control strategy. Approximately 750 phytotelmata in 16 locations on Car Nicobar Island was examined. Mosquito larvae were collected from different habitats such as tree holes, root holes, leaf axils, and bamboo stumps

Variation in Root-Related Traits Is Associated With Water Uptake in Lagenaria siceraria Genotypes Under Water-Deficit Conditions.

In many agricultural areas, crop production has decreased due to a lack of water availability, which is having a negative impact on sustainability and putting food security at risk. In plants, the plasticity of the root system architecture (RSA) is considered to be a key trait driving the modification of the growth and structure of roots in response to water deficits. The purpose of this study was to examine the plasticity of the RSA traits (mean root diameter, MRD; root volume, RV; root length, RL; and root surface area, SA) associated with drought tolerance in eight Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.

Non-neuronal acetylcholine involved in reproduction in mammals and honeybees.

Bacteria and archaea synthesize acetylcholine (ACh). Thus, it can be postulated that ACh was created by nature roughly three billion years ago. Therefore, the wide expression of ACh in nature (i.e., in bacteria, archaea, unicellular organisms, plants, fungi, non-vertebrates and vertebrates and in the abundance of non-neuronal cells of mammals) is not surprising. The term non-neuronal ACh and non-neuronal cholinergic system have been introduced to describe the auto- and paracrine, that is, local regulatory actions of ACh in cells not innervated by neuronal cholinergic fibers and to communicate

Impact of climate change on Chinese medicinal plants and adaptation strategies.

AIMS: Global climate change threats to plant communities worldwide. This review explicitly narrows its scope exclusively to Chinese medicine plants (CMPs), the core raw materials for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). CMPs are distinguished by clinical efficacy dependent on complex secondary‑metabolite mixtures, geo‑authentic (Daodi) production systems, and large‑scale industrial supply chains. Existing studies remain fragmented, most studies examine single‑factor stress, whereas few systematically link ecological shifts, phytochemical disturbance, clinical therapeutic performance, and indust

Integrated physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses reveal lead-induces stress responses and tolerance of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

BACKGROUND: Lead (Pb) pollution is a severe environmental condition that inhibits the growth of plants by causing oxidative stress and interference with cellular and molecular functions. Genotypic variation in stress tolerance has been identified in wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum L.), but there has been limited evidence of integrated physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic responses to Pb. RESULTS: Pb exposure (0-3 mM lead acetate) had significant effect on shoot height and root length in all wheat varieties with root being more sensitive than shoot. The BARI Gom 30 genotype variet

The AtHDA6-AtSK2 module promotes cold tolerance by enhancing shikimate metabolism and antioxidant activity.

Low temperature is an environmental factor that significantly impairs the normal development of plants by limiting yield and quality. Although histone deacetylase HDA6 is involved in various biological processes, the specific molecular mechanisms underlying its response to low temperatures remain unexplored in Arabidopsis. In this study, we investigated the HDA6 expression pattern at low temperatures and discovered that cold stress-induced transcriptional activity increased the HDA6 protein level. Freezing experiments demonstrated that HDA6 functions as a positive regulator in response to low

The impact of dietary neem leaf on the growth and biochemical traits of rabbits.

Neem is a plant used both as food and in traditional medicine. Its many active components, such as Carotenoids, Saponins, Triterpenoids and Nimbidin, may render it a beneficial feed additive for rabbits. Healthy weaned rabbits from breed V-line (VL) were selected to examine the effect of neem (Azadirachta indica) on growth performance, carcass traits, morphology, and blood parameters responses. Thirty-two V-line rabbits (45 days old) were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 8 per group): a control group (G1) receiving a basal diet, and three treatment groups (G2, G3, G4) receiving the basal

GenoTriplo: A SNP genotype calling method for triploids.

Triploidy is very useful in both aquaculture and some cultivated plants as the induced sterility helps to enhance growth and product quality, as well as acting as a barrier against the contamination of wild populations by escapees. To use genetic information from triploids for academic or breeding purposes, an efficient and robust method to genotype triploids is needed. We developed such a method for genotype calling from SNP arrays, and we implemented it in the R package named GenoTriplo. Our method requires no prior information on cluster positions and remains unaffected by shifted luminesce

[Malaria transmission in 1999 in the rice field area of the Kou Valley (Bama), (Burkina Faso)].

A longitudinal study based on mosquitoes sampled by larvae prospecting and adult catches on humans was carried out during 1999 in the rice field area of the Kou Valley (South-West Burkina Faso) to evaluate the malaria transmission level. Two sites were studied: VK5 located in the rice field centre and VK7 in the periphery. Irrigation is sub-permanent and two crops are grown each year: from February to June during the dry season and from July to November during the rainy season. A man sleeping in VK5 without any protection is exposed to more than 60,000 mosquito bites/year. Two majors vectors a

Integrated metabolomic-transcriptomic profiling of dwarf Camellia reticulata 'Hentiangao' reveals key gibberellin metabolism genes and multi-hormone crosstalk under GA3 treatment.

BACKGROUND: Camellia reticulata 'Hentiangao', a dwarf camellia cultivar, possesses distinctive ornamental traits and high value for urban landscaping. Dwarfism is an important agronomic and ornamental trait, and gibberellin (GA) plays a central role in regulating stem elongation and plant height. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying its dwarf phenotype and the interactions between stem development and endogenous hormone networks remain unclear, limiting the promotion and targeted breeding of this cultivar. We analyzed shoot tips of C. reticulata 'Hentiangao' treated with 800 mg·L-1 GA3

Genome-Wide Characterization of the GT4 Gene Family in Cotton.

The glycosyltransferase 4 (GT4) family plays essential roles in plant cell wall biosynthesis, glycolipid metabolism, and secondary metabolite glycosylation, yet its characterization in cotton remains scarce. Here, we performed a genome-wide identification of GT4 genes in four cotton species using comprehensive bioinformatics approaches, and systematically analyzed their conserved motifs, gene structures, chromosomal distributions, phylogeny, and selection pressures. A total of 49 GT4 members were identified, including seven genes in G. arboreum (A2), nine genes in G. raimondii (D5), 16 genes i

A novel matrix multiplication framework for modeling genotype-by-environment interaction in genomic prediction.

Accurate modeling of genotype-by-environment (G × E) interaction is a central challenge in plant breeding, as it determines how genetic potential is expressed across heterogeneous and changing environments. In genomic prediction, a widely adopted strategy represents G × E interaction through the Hadamard (element-wise) product of genotype and environment covariance matrices, capturing interaction effects via joint similarity. While effective, this formulation may not fully represent the structured complexity of G × E relationships observed in multi-environment trials. In this study, we extend …

Dissecting genotype-by-environment interactions and genetic diversity in gamma irradiation-derived bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) mutants.

Climate change and escalating biotic pressures, particularly stripe (yellow) rust, present major challenges to sustainable wheat production in India and globally. To enhance genetic diversity and introduce novel variations, this study utilized mutation breeding by subjecting seeds of the popular wheat variety DBW88 to gamma irradiation. Following rigorous selection through successive generations, twenty promising mutant lines alongside their parent and commercial checks (HD2967, HD3086, WH1105) were evaluated over three consecutive crop seasons under multi-environment trials. The genotypes wer

Integrated analysis of structure, physiology, transcriptome and metabolome reveals key metabolic pathway responses of cold-tolerant pear cultivar germplasms under low-temperature stress.

Freezing injury during winter is a critical abiotic stress that severely impacts the growth, development and, fruit quality of deciduous fruit trees. Cold tolerance can be induced through seasonal cold acclimation, which involves coordinated adjustments in tissue structure, physiology, and biochemistry driven by natural low-temperature, with distinct strategies across plant species. However, the cold-tolerant mechanisms of pear trees during cold acclimation remain poorly understood. Here, one-year-old branches of 10 pear cultivar germplasms were evaluated for cold tolerance based on the semi-l

Integrative physiology, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analysis reveals the response mechanism of melon seedlings to cold stress.

Early-spring cultivation enables melons to be marketed ahead of the regular season, yet cold stress during this critical growth stage severely suppresses seedling growth and development, ultimately causing substantial yield losses. To date, the physiological shifts, molecular regulatory cascades and metabolic reprogramming triggered by cold stress in melon seedlings have not been fully characterized. In this work, we combined physiological assays, transcriptome, and metabolome profiling to dissect cold-responsive regulatory networks at the seedling stage using two melon inbred lines with diver
