OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop and assess multidisciplinary advanced surgical planning (ASP) sessions using three dimensional (3D) printed models for cervicothoracic slide tracheoplasty (CST). We hypothesized that these sessions would improve surgeon confidence, streamline intraoperative planning, and highlight the utility of 3D modeling.
METHODS: 3D-printed patient-specific trachea models were used in pre-operative ASP sessions consisting of a multidisciplinary case discussion and hands-on slide tracheoplasty simulation. Participants completed a survey rating realism,

BACKGROUND: Modern achievements in transnasal endoscopic skull base (SB) surgery have led to complex resections that render reconstruction a challenge. Temporoparietal fascia flap (TPFF) is a suitable option for SB reconstruction. The side-door TPFF technique for anterior SB reconstruction is described here for the first time in a real-life surgical setting.
METHODS: Patients affected by a SB malignancy who underwent cranioendoscopic resection were included. For reconstruction, a multilayer reconstruction technique including side-door TPFF transposition was employed.
RESULTS: TPFF transposit

Hand injuries are common, and due to the complex functions of the hand, soft tissue defects present a surgical challenge in reconstruction. Hand defects exposing deeper structures warrant reconstruction with local flaps, but in Denmark, reconstruction surgery of the hand is routinely managed within the orthopaedic specialty alone with no plastic surgical involvement. This review aims at describing the most common local flaps of the hand and forearm and encourage to stronger collaboration between hand- and plastic surgeons in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Deep sternal wound infections (DSWI) following cardiothoracic surgery represent a life quality endangering sequelae and may lead to sternal osteomyelitis. Radical debridement followed by Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) may achieve infection control, provide angiogenesis, and improve respiratory function. When stable wound conditions have been established a sustainable plastic surgical flap reconstruction should be undertaken.
OBJECTIVE: This study analyses a method to simplify defect coverage with a single Latissimus Dorsi Myocutaneous Flap (LDMF).
METHODS: Preparation of

The article presents a literature review that analyzes methods of stenting the laryngeal-tracheal lumen after reconstructive surgical interventions. 49 literature sources were studied. The advantages and disadvantages of existing stents are determined. The choice of the optimal method of stenting, which contributes to the formation of a stable physiological lumen of the larynx and trachea, determines the relevance of the problem raised.

An increasing number of women are undergoing female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS). Labiaplasty, the most commonly performed FGCS, consists of a surgical procedure to decrease the inner labia size so that no or less tissue protrudes beyond the outer labia. Anatomically, it is similar to female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) Type 2a. Thus, what are the differences and similarities between FGCS and FGM/C? Even though FGCS is not recommended by most scientific societies, it is considered legal, contrary to FGM/C. Most women seeking FGCS have physiologic (neither diseased nor anatomically aty

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nasoseptal flaps are a frequently used and well characterized means of reconstruction following endoscopic endonasal approach surgery (EEA). However, there are alternative means of reconstruction, including the extracranial pericranial flap (ePCF), that while used infrequently fulfill a specialized need in larger or salvage reconstructions. This review aims to better characterize long-term outcomes using ePCF where there is currently a paucity of objective data on use and outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: A traditional pericranial flap involves elevating and rotating the flap thro

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular resection and reconstruction are common but complex procedures in head and neck surgery. Resection with adequate margins is critical to the success of the procedure but technical training is restricted to real case experience. Here we describe our experience in the development and evaluation of a mandibular resection and reconstruction simulation module.
METHODS: 3D printed (3DP) models of a mandible with a pathologic lesion were developed from imaging data from a patient with an ameloblastoma. During an educational conference, otolaryngology trainees participated in

Reconstruction of the lip is a necessary procedure when lip tumors are excised. Although many good techniques have been described, they often have disadvantages such as necrosis and extensive suture lines. In our approach, we aim to minimize the suture line and avoid tissue necrosis for medium-sized lip defects (30-80 %). This is a surgical technique report from a single center. After tumor resection, we made a bilateral 15 mm horizontal skin and mucosa incision from the angles of the lip to the lateral sides. The mucosa and skin were dissected from the underlying muscle, and the muscle was cu

Background: Treatment of muscle belly lacerations remains a problem for surgeons. Inadequate repair of lacerations can cause functional disability. To date, there is no consensus on the method of repair for these injuries. We have previously described a technique of repairing mid-substance muscle belly lacerations. The aim of this study was to determine the ultimate strength of an intact muscle belly and to compare the anchor suture (AS) technique with the modified Kessler (MK) technique. Methods: Fifteen fresh frozen hind-legs from adolescent pigs were divided into three groups and used for t

Many techniques have been proposed to restore facial symmetry in facial nerve palsies. This study presents our surgical approach called Endoscopic Temporalis Tendon Extension (ETTE). After nasotracheal intubation, a 4 cm skin incision is made at the nasolabial fold. Under endoscopic view, the medial face of the masseter muscle is detached from the mandibular ramus. The coronoid process is then sectioned by Piezosurgery®. Finally, a fascia lata graft is suspended between the temporalis tendon and the orbicularis oris. ETTE is a mixed technique, with a static suspension component and a dynamic c

Importance: Surgeons treating facial paralysis with reanimation surgery measure the outcomes of surgery and adjust treatment to each patient's needs. Our objective is to review the current subjective facial paralysis assessment tools and the emerging computer-based objective analysis, which may involve artificial intelligence. Observations: In recent years, many new automated approaches to outcome measurement in facial reanimation surgery have been developed. Most of these tools utilize artificial intelligence to analyze emotional expression and symmetry of facial landmarks. Other tools have p
