The aim of this study was to develop a new type of biomechanical model for biomechanical researches of maxillofacial fractures and then evaluate it. Twenty synthetic polyurethane maxillary and mandibular models were used to simulate the mandible and maxilla. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of plastic polyurethane stents compared with nasolacrimal cryoplasty in the management of epiphora in adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients (N = 37; mean age, 64 years; range, 34-86 y; six men, 31 women) with severe epiphora with partial/complete obstruction of the nasolacrimal system were randomized to have a plastic stent inserted (n = 19) or to undergo balloon dilation cryoplasty (n = 18). Both procedures were conducted on an outpatient basis. Patency was assessed with Kaplan-Meier curves.

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of the Song stent in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2003 and 2007, we treated 76 consecutive nasolacrimal obstructions in 73 patients (mean age 56 years; range 19-81) with implantation of polyurethane stents. Indications were epiphora in 46 patients, dacryocystitis in 18 and recurrent conjunctivitis in three. Average follow-up was 1 year (3 months to 5 years).

Hypertrophic scarring poses a clinically relevant problem as it can be cosmetically disfiguring and functionally debilitating. A lack of animal models has hindered an understanding of the pathogenesis and development of new treatment strategies therefore has largely been empiric. The feasibility of using biotrickling filters for the removal of mercury vapor from simulated flue gases was evaluated. The experiments were carried out in laboratory-scale biotrickling filters with various mixed cultures naturally attached on a polyurethane foam packing. UNLABELLED: LOCAL CARE: Local antiseptics and antibiotics must be avoided to preserve the local bacterial ecosystem of the wound. If surgical debridement is not possible, hypercolloid, alginate or hydrogel dressings should be applied to achieve natural autolytic cleansing. The budding and epithelization phases are also treated either with oily or humid dressings or more modern hypercellular, hydrocolloid and polyurethane film dressings. Other treatments under evaluation include physical means (negative pressure, electrical stimulation) or use of recombinant growth factors.

Complications related to the use of silicone subclavian catheters for hemodialysis were prospectively studied in 21 consecutive patients with acute and chronic renal failure.
