Current airway management practice among Swiss anesthesiologists : Results of a national survey.

BACKGROUND: While limited data on the impact of implementing guidelines in airway management on outcomes exist, there is a consensus that the implementation and the adherence to guidelines enhance patient safety. Recently, the Swiss Society for Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SSAPM) endorsed the guidelines of The Fondation Latine des Voies Aériennes (FLAVA) as the official guidelines for airway management in Switzerland. This study aimed to determine current practice of airway management in Switzerland. OBJECTIVE: To determine the available equipment, the differences between instit

Awareness of post-transplant endocrine disorders among kidney transplant clinicians: results of an Italian survey.

PURPOSE: Endocrine disorders, which are commonly associated with End-Stage Kidney Disease, may either persist or emerge de novo in the post-transplant period. Despite their clinical relevance, the literature remains limited, and current guidelines offer only vague recommendations regarding the diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: A 44-item survey was sent via email to each kidney transplant center to assess transplant physicians' interest in the endocrine disorders of kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) undergoing regular follow-up. The questionnaire was composed of 6 sections: general informati

Protocol for community-driven selection of strategies to implement evidence-based practices to reduce opioid overdoses in the HEALing Communities Study: a trial to evaluate a community-engaged intervention in Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York and Ohio.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid-involved overdose deaths continue to surge in many communities, despite numerous evidence-based practices (EBPs) that exist to prevent them. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) was launched to develop and test an intervention (ie, Communities That HEAL (CTH)) that supports communities in expanding uptake of EBPs to reduce opioid-involved overdose deaths. This paper describes a protocol for a process foundational to the CTH intervention through which community coalitions select strategies to implement EBPs locally. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The CTH is being implemented in 67 c

Awareness of European practitioners toward uncommon tropical diseases: are we prepared to deal with mass migration? Results of an international survey.

PURPOSE: The recent rise in migration from Africa through the Mediterranean basin into Europe has resulted in an increased incidence of uncommon diseases such as schistosomiasis and genito-urinary tuberculosis, which were previously largely unknown in this region. This study aimed to evaluate the insight of European urologists into diagnosing and managing these disease conditions and to determine whether they were adequately prepared to deal with the changing disease spectrum in their countries. METHODS: A survey including specific questions about the diagnosis and management of 'tropical' ur

Use of Regional Anesthesia Techniques: Analysis of Institutional Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocols for Colorectal Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Principles of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) protocols are well established, with the primary goal of optimizing perioperative care and recovery. The use of multimodal analgesia is a key component of these protocols, including regional analgesia techniques such as thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA), transversus abdominis plane (TAP), rectus sheath blocks or continuous wound infiltration (CWI)/catheters, and spinal anesthesia. We compare and contrast regional anesthesia approaches in different institutional colorectal surgery ERAS protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ERAS pr

International survey and surgeon's preferences in diagnostic work-up towards treatment of anterior shoulder instability.

PURPOSE: Recurrent anterior shoulder instability after surgical treatment can be caused by bony defects. Several diagnostic tools have been designed to measure the extent of these bony lesions. Currently, there is no consensus which measurement tool to use and decide which type of surgery is most appropriate. We therefore performed an evaluation of agreement in surgeons' preference of diagnostic work-up and surgical treatment of anterior shoulder instability. METHODS: An international survey was conducted amongst orthopaedic shoulder surgeons. The survey contained questions about surgeons' ex

[Diagnosis of a systolic murmur among young asymptomatic patient: An assessment of professional practices for the expertise in military medicine].

UNLABELLED: The finding of a systolic heart murmur is common in medical military practice. Albeit often benign among young healthy adults, it can reveal a valvular or a cardiac disease, which could worsen during workout or expose to risk of a sudden death. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of the military general practitioner when discovering a systolic murmur among young asymptomatic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During one year, this study involved all the general practitioners of the medical military centres of Brittany and the cardiologists of the military hospital

[Survey among gynaecologists and surgeons on rectocele].

OBJECTIVE: Provide insight into how gynaecologists and surgeons name, diagnose and treat a rectocele and identify the differences between these two professional groups. DESIGN: Questionnaire survey. METHODS: We sent an online survey with 16 multiple-choice questions to gynaecologists and surgeons from two national working groups. RESULTS: There is no discernible consensus on nomenclature, diagnostics and treatment. Gynaecologists and surgeons each choose their own approach. CONCLUSION: It is in the patient's interest to draw up a joint guideline; however, multidisciplinary cooperation is o

Referring advanced cancer patients for palliative treatment: a national structured vignette survey of Australian GPs.

BACKGROUND: Although (general practitioners) GPs have a role in managing patients with advanced cancer, little is known about their referral decisions. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore, using structured vignettes, how GPs might manage patients presenting with advanced cancer. DESIGN: A self-administered survey consisting of structured vignettes was administered to GPs in Australia. Fifty-six vignettes describing patients who may benefit from palliative care and/or treatment were constructed encompassing seven advanced cancer diagnoses (cerebral metastasis, lung metastases, renal can

[Pre travel advice - a study among Swiss general practitioners].

Up to 65 % of travellers seek pre-travel advice at their general practitioner. Professionals should inform about the most common and most dangerous health threats, requiring up-to-date knowledge about epidemiology of respective disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the content of pre-travel advice given by general practitioners in order to provide them with better expert support from travel medicine specialists. One third of them perform pre-travel advice weekly, and some two thirds do so at least monthly. The most frequently discussed topics are malaria, immunisation, ins

Adjunct primer for the use of national comprehensive cancer network guidelines for the surgical management of cutaneous malignant melanoma patients.

Recently, a Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) survey of melanoma patterns of care by the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale showed remarkable deviations from best practice patterns throughout the country. The study, which analyzed the SEER records of 35,126 stage I to III cutaneous malignant melanoma patients treated from 2004 to 2006, showed that adherence to National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) therapeutic resection margins occurred in less than 36% of patients. Similarly, considerable variation in the quality of melanoma care in the United States when assessed using 26 quality i

Reducing therapeutic injection overuse through patients-prescribers interaction group discussions in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Inappropriately prescription of injections has been reported in developing and developed countries. Previous studies in Tanzania showed that over 70% of patients attending out- patient clinics at private dispensaries received at least one injection per consultation, a value higher than WHO recommended target of 10%. This is of concern considering the likelihood of adverse effects of possible use of unsafe syringes to transmit HIV, hepatitis B and C, poliomyelitis and added economic impact on the patient and the healthcare system. This study aimed to investigate the impact of Interaction Group
