Cognitive and behavioral functioning in two neurogenetic disorders; how different are these aspects in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Neurofibromatosis type 1?

The presence of neurocognitive and behavioral problems are common features in various neurogenetic disorders. In Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), these problems have been linked to mutations along the dystrophin gene affecting different brain dystrophin isoforms. However, comparable cognitive and behavioral problems have been found in Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). This study aims to assess disorder specific differences in cognition and behavior between DMD and NF1. Retrospective data of 38 male patients with DMD were aged-matched with data of 38 male patients with NF1. Patients of both gro

Mental health and risky sexual behaviors among Chinese college students: a large cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: College students are at-risk populations of mental health problems and risky sexual behaviors. However, little literature focuses on the association between mental health problems and risky sexual behaviors. Our study examined the association between mental health problems (depressive symptoms, suicide, and mental disorders) and risky sexual behaviors among a large sample of Chinese college students. METHODS: A total of 49,728 Chinese college students (47.5% male) eventually participated in the analysis. A self-administered questionnaire was used to measure mental health, risky se

Changes in Sleep Problems Across Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Treatment: Findings from the Multimodal Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Study.

Objective: Stimulant medication and behavior therapy are efficacious for youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, research suggests that stimulants may start and/or worsen sleep problems for youth. Further, the impact of behavior therapy for ADHD on sleep is unknown. This study examined the frequency of sleep problems and effects of stimulant medication, behavior therapy, and their combination on sleep problems in youth with ADHD. This study also explored the influence of dimensional baseline ratings of ADHD symptom subtype and psychiatric comorbidity on sleep outco

Anticipated Motives for Gambling Treatment in Adults from the U.S.

Prior works note that identifying problematic play is a leading barrier to treatment seeking, contributing to low treatment rates in those with gambling problems (e.g., Bijker et al., 2022; Suurvali et al., 2012a). While research has looked at treatment seekers' motives for treatment (Gainsbury et al., 2014; Suurvali et al., 2012b), the situations or signs (anticipated motives) individuals look for that suggest they would need treatment in the future remains unknown. Participants were gamblers (N = 1,791) from a census-matched U.S. sample of adults who reported no concerns about their gambling

Human immunodeficiency virus infections in adolescents.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, once largely confined to adolescents with hemophilia, has come to involve the general adolescent population. Individuals younger than 22 years comprise up to 25% of the people newly infected with HIV. Unsafe sexual practices, intravenous drug abuse, homelessness, psychiatric disorders, and inadequate psychosocial support are only some of the factors that have contributed to the epidemic. Present data indicate that interventions have had a positive impact on adolescent behavior in preventing the continuing spread of the disease, but more needs to be

Cognitive and behavioral trajectories in 22q11DS from childhood into adolescence: a prospective 6-year follow-up study.

Patients with 22q11DS are at risk of behavioral problems and cognitive impairment. Recent studies suggest a possible intellectual decline in 22q11DS children. To date it is unknown if cognitive development is related to the behavioral problems in 22q11DS. We studied 53 children with 22q11DS who underwent cognitive and behavioral assessments at 9.5 years (T1) and 15.3 years (T2). In about one third, IQ data obtained at 7.5 years (T0) were also available. Results showed that internalizing behaviors intensified while externalizing behaviors decreased. Simultaneously, in about a third a significan

Social support and adjustment in chronically ill and handicapped children.

The relationship between social support and adjustment was investigated in children with a chronic physical illness or handicap. Mothers of 153 children with juvenile diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obesity, spina bifida, or cerebral palsy reported on these children's family support, peer support, externalizing behavior problems, and internalizing behavior problems. Children reported as having high social support from both family and peers showed a significantly better adjustment than those with high social support from only one of these sources. Chronically ill or physically

Reactive attachment disorder symptoms and prosocial behavior in middle childhood: the role of Secure Base Script knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Children with attachment disorder show prosocial behavior problems. Children with a reactive attachment disorder show inhibited and emotionally withdrawn behavior. Consequently, these children typically display prosocial behavior problems. However, the underlying mechanism between reactive attachment disorder and prosocial behavior problems is still unclear and findings in literature are mixed. METHODS: The current study investigated the role of children's attachment representations in this association. Attachment representations reflect knowledge about a cognitive script regardin

Could Bertrand Russell's barber have bitten his own teeth? A problem of logic and definitions.

Guiding the positive evolution of behavior is an admirable goal. Wilson et al.'s arguments are based largely on studies of problem correction. The methodology is sound, but not the post hoc ergo procter hoc extrapolation. What is required is evidence that it can proactively generate positive change. The evolution of human behavior to date has been affected by many factors that include unmalleable and unpredicted environmental changes.

The long view: Lie-telling trajectories, ages 6 to 19 years.

Longitudinal research on the development of deception across the lifespan remains limited, particularly regarding trajectories of lie-telling and their associations with later problems. The current study aimed to address this gap using longitudinal data of 3,017 Quebec francophone children (47.2% girls, 52.8% boys, aged ∼6 years). Growth mixture modeling identified distinct trajectories of parent and teacher reported lie-telling from ages 6 to 19 years, with reports showing links to early aggressive-disruptive behavior. Trajectories of perceived lying by parents and teachers were also associat

Bridging basic physiology and clinical reasoning: student perceptions of a case-based collaborative activity with AI support.

Teaching membrane transport in introductory physiology is challenging because students often struggle to integrate membrane transport, electrochemical gradients, and related mechanisms into clinically meaningful reasoning. To address this problem, a case-based collaborative activity was introduced in a first-year cell physiology course for undergraduate life and medical sciences students. Small groups analyzed a membrane transport disorder, explained the underlying physiological defect, and were permitted to use AI tools during the task. After the activity and short presentation, the students

Inter-brain coupling during naturalistic collaborative Tangram solving in child dyads: an exploratory fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Collaborative problem solving plays a central role in children's cognitive and social development, yet how neural activity relates to real-time peer coordination remains poorly understood. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning, we simultaneously recorded brain activity from 15 dyads of school-aged children during a naturalistic Tangram puzzle task, including rest, solo problem-solving, observation, and collaboration. We examined task-related neural activation and inter-brain connectivity (IBC) to assess how interpersonal neural dynamics relate to task context and be

Associations between emotion and behavior codes and ADOS-2 scores in a sample of children referred for autism evaluation.

While the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is considered a "reference standard" measure to observe symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), little is known about the utility of its Other Abnormal Behaviors or "E codes." This study investigated the unique influence of each E code (overactivity, disruptive behavior, anxiety) on ADOS-2 scoring. Data from ADOS-2 administrations (Modules 1, 2, 3) were collected from 3364 children (mean age = 6.73 years) at an outpatient ASD clinic. For those with ASD, ADOS-2 Calibrated Severity Scores (CSS) were descriptively highe

Validating the German version of the Personality Disorder Severity-ICD-11 Scale using nominal response models.

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) features a new classification of personality disorders (PD), focusing on the severity of PD. Although there are numerous self-report measures that assess PD severity, to date only the Personality Disorder Severity-ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) is based on ICD-11's operationalization of PD. Initial results indicated that the PDS-ICD-11 measures a unidimensional construct, but the assumptions made for scoring its bipolar items had not been fully examined. The aim of this study is to fill this gap and investigate the latent structure of the German versi

Problematic behaviours associated with generalized anxiety disorder during pregnancy and the postpartum period: A thematic analysis.

UNLABELLED: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common anxiety disorders in pregnancy and the postpartum (perinatal) period. Perinatal women with GAD engage in problematic behaviours, yet the focus and function of these behaviours remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: Given that worry during the perinatal period is largely maternally focused, the objective of this study was to explore the accompanying behavioural features of GAD during pregnancy and the postpartum period. DESIGN: A qualitative study was conducted. METHODS: Twenty-five pregnant (n = 10) and postpartum (n = 15) women w

Understanding posttraumatic stress trajectories in adolescent females: A strength-based machine learning approach examining risk and protective factors including online behaviors.

Heterogeneity in the course of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following a major life trauma such as childhood sexual abuse (CSA) can be attributed to numerous contextual factors, psychosocial risk, and family/peer support. The present study investigates a comprehensive set of baseline psychosocial risk and protective factors including online behaviors predicting empirically derived PTSS trajectories over time. Females aged 12-16 years (N = 440); 156 with substantiated CSA; 284 matched comparisons with various self-reported potentially traumatic events (PTEs) were assessed at baseline and

Role of Callous and Unemotional (CU) Traits on the Development of Youth with Behavioral Disorders: A Systematic Review.

UNLABELLED: Numerous studies have shown that youth with behavioral disorders (BD) present an increased risk for developing severe and persistent antisocial behaviors in adulthood. Retrospective research notes that not all children and adolescents follow a negative trajectory and explains this heterogeneity in particular by the severity of CU traits. Our study examines how these traits affect the functioning of children and adolescents with BD. METHOD: A systematic literature review conducted through various databases and using different keywords made it possible to analyze 52 studies publishe

Emotional and behavioural problems in children and adolescents: The role of constipation.

AIM: The functional constipation (FC) is a source of an expressive suffering in children, negatively affecting their emotional, social, and physical well-being. The objective of this study is to describe the clinical and behavioural characteristics of children/adolescents with FC. METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational, analytical study was conducted in public places by interviewing parents of children/adolescents about their child's bowel habits and psychological profile. Bowel symptoms were investigated using the Rome IV criteria. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was us

Sex Differences in Externalizing and Internalizing Symptoms of Children with ASD.

This study examined sex differences in externalizing and internalizing symptoms of children with ASD without intellectual disability (ID). The sample (n = 80) included 40 girls and 40 boys, ages 6-12 years, with ASD (without ID) matched on age and IQ. Externalizing and internalizing symptoms were significantly elevated for this sample (girls and boys) relative to normative estimates for all the scales (hyperactivity, aggression, anxiety, and depression) except conduct problems. No significant differences were found between girls and boys for either externalizing symptoms or internalizing sympt

Clinical characteristics of boys with comorbid autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are frequently comorbid and, as both are defined as neurodevelopmental disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, simultaneous diagnosis is possible. However, despite the frequency of this comorbid state, its endophenotypic features remain unclear. This study thus aimed to describe the behavioral and emotional problems in boys with comorbid ASD and ADHD using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). METHODS: In total, 102 boys (age, 6-12 years
