Exudative retinopathy and detachment: a late reactivation of retinopathy of prematurity after intravitreal bevacizumab.

A 25-week postmenstrual age premature infant was treated with bilateral intravitreal bevacizumab for retinopathy of prematurity at 35 weeks' PMA. Postinjection, the retinal vessels progressed anteriorly within the retina. The patient presented 1 year after injection with bilateral exudative retinal detachments. The right eye was treated with intravitreal bevacizumab, laser ablation, and scleral buckling, resulting in resolution of the exudation and detachment. The left eye was treated with vitrectomy and lensectomy, but persistent exudation and detachment remained. This case demonstrates the r…

Hypothermia prevents the development of ischemic proliferative retinopathy induced by severe perinatal asphyxia.

Obstetric complications, such as perinatal asphyxia, may cause retinal injuries as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a type of ischemic proliferative retinopathy. Up to date there are no appropriate experimental models for studying the long-term sequels of this disease. In the present work, we present an experimental model of perinatal asphyxia which shows structural and ultrastructural retinal alterations at the most inner layers of the retina, such as neurodegeneration, development of neoformed vessels and glial reaction, which are compatible with the histopathological description of ROP. Telangiectasia and optic atrophy in cone-rod degenerations.

The diagnosis of cone-rod dysfunction is made with the electroretinogram (ERG). Characteristically, the photopic ERG is worse than the scotopic ERG, and both are abnormal. Of a larger group of patients with retinal dystrophy, 20 cases of cone-rod dysfunction were identified. All patients had progressive disease, and all three main modes of inheritance were represented. There was remarkable similarity of findings among all patients, including temporal disc atrophy, telangiectasia of disc vessels, and little to no pigmentary retinal changes. Patients were not night-blind unless advanced disease

MicroRNA-126 inhibits pathological retinal neovascularization via suppressing vascular endothelial growth factor expression in a rat model of retinopathy of prematurity.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the principal growth factor responsible for the retinal neovascularization in the pathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Current therapies for ROP include laser ablation and intravitreal anti-VEGF injection. However, these treatments either destroy the peripheral retina or associate with problems of persistent peripheral avascular retina or later recurrence of ROP. In the present study we investigated a new therapeutic approach by exploring the potential role of a specific microRNA, miR-126, in regulating VEGFA expression and retinal neov

Cellular Mechanisms of Angiogenesis in Neonatal Rat Models of Retinal Neurodegeneration.

Νeuronal and glial cells play an important role in the development of vasculature in the retina. In this study, we investigated whether re-vascularization occurs in retinal neurodegenerative injury models. To induce retinal injury, N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA, 200 nmol) or kainic acid (KA, 20 nmol) was injected into the vitreous chamber of the eye on postnatal day (P)7. Morphological changes in retinal neurons and vasculature were assessed on P14, P21, and P35. Prevention of vascular growth and regression of some capillaries were observed on P14 in retinas of NMDA- and KA-treated eyes. Howe

Measurement of gene expression in human retinal microvessels by solution hybridization.

Changes in gene expression could play a central role in the phenotypic abnormalities of the retinal vascular cells observed in diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases. To measure gene expression in human retinal microvessels, a RNA-probe excess solution hybridization assay was used. Retinal microvessels were isolated from eyes obtained within 36 hr of death, and intact RNA was extracted by the guanidine method. Hybridization of poly(A)+ RNA northern blots revealed only the cytoskeletal beta-actin message; by using the more sensitive solution hybridization assay, the plasminogen activat

Clinical Application of Adaptive Optics Imaging in Diagnosis, Management, and Monitoring of Ophthalmological Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Visualization of the retinal structure is crucial for understanding the pathophysiology of ophthalmic diseases, as well as for monitoring their course and treatment effects. Until recently, evaluation of the retina at the cellular level was only possible using histological methods, because the available retinal imaging technology had insufficient resolution due to aberrations caused by the optics of the eye. Adaptive optics (AO) technology improved the resolution of optical systems to 2 µm by correcting optical wave-front aberrations, thereby revolutionizing methods for studying eye structures
