Physical activity moderates effects of stressor-induced rumination on cortisol reactivity.

OBJECTIVE: Physically active individuals have lower rates of morbidity and mortality, and recent evidence indicates that physical activity may be particularly beneficial to those experiencing chronic stress. The tendency to ruminate increases and prolongs physiological stress responses, including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses as indexed by cortisol reactivity to stressful experiences. We examined the association between ruminating in response to a laboratory stressor task and HPA axis reactivity and recovery and examined whether a physically active life-style moderates th

Early family context and development of adolescent ruminative style: moderation by temperament.

We know very little about the development of rumination, the tendency to passively brood about negative feelings. Because rumination is a risk factor for many forms of psychopathology, especially depression, such knowledge could prove important for preventing negative mental health outcomes in youth. This study examined developmental origins of rumination in a longitudinal sample (N=337; 51% girls) studied in preschool (ages 3½ and 4½ years) and early adolescence (ages 13 and 15 years). Results indicated that family context and child temperament, assessed during the preschool period, were risk

Direct and distal effects of noncontingent juice on rumination exhibited by a child with autism.

Previous research has demonstrated the efficacy of the noncontingent delivery of foods and liquids at suppressing rumination, the repeated regurgitation and rechewing of partially digested food. However, it is unclear how long this reduction is maintained after caregivers terminate this procedure. The current study examined the direct and distal effects of noncontingent juice on rumination by measuring the duration of rumination during juice delivery and immediately following the termination of juice delivery. Noncontingent juice suppressed rumination, but this suppression was not maintained a

Rumination, worry, cognitive avoidance, and behavioral avoidance: examination of temporal effects.

Recently, cross-sectional research has demonstrated that depressive rumination is significantly associated with the tendency to engage in cognitive and behavioral avoidance. This evidence suggests that rumination may be the result of attempts to avoid personally threatening thoughts, in a manner suggested by multiple contemporary theories of worry. This investigation examined the temporal relationship among daily levels of cognitive avoidance, behavioral avoidance, rumination, worry, and negative affect. Seventy-eight adolescents completed baseline questionnaires and then electronically comple

Subacute ruminal acidosis and evaluation of blood gas analysis in dairy cow.

Subacute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA) corresponds to an imbalance between lactate-producing bacteria and lactate-using bacteria, which results in a change in ruminal pH associated with a prevalent consumption of rapidly fermentable carbohydrates. In our study, 216 primiparus and multiparus dairy cows were selected from 20 Italian intensive dairy herds and were divided into three groups based on the risk of SARA. All the dairy cows had high average milk production. After blood sampling, a complete blood gas analysis was performed. One-way ANOVA was performed to compare the three groups. O(2) Cont, P

Anger rumination, social support, and cardiac symptoms in patients undergoing angiography.

OBJECTIVES: Socially isolated individuals report more cardiac symptoms, suffer increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and experience higher levels of stress and anxiety than those with more effective support resources. However, the complex interactions of psychosocial factors implicated in the disease process remain to be fully elucidated. We sought to explore these relationships, with the addition of a novel psychosocial variable, anger rumination, which could be associated with increased cardiovascular risk. DESIGN: We examined the association of psychological stress, social supp

The angry brain: neural correlates of anger, angry rumination, and aggressive personality.

Very little is known about the neural circuitry guiding anger, angry rumination, and aggressive personality. In the present fMRI experiment, participants were insulted and induced to ruminate. Activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex was positively related to self-reported feelings of anger and individual differences in general aggression. Activity in the medial prefrontal cortex was related to self-reported rumination and individual differences in displaced aggression. Increased activation in the hippocampus, insula, and cingulate cortex following the provocation predicted subsequent

Sex differences and response styles: subtypes of rumination and associations with depressive symptoms.

In view of recent findings regarding the multifaceted nature of rumination in adults and older adolescents, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the construct of rumination as a 2-factor model (brooding and reflection) in a child and early adolescent sample as well as examine sex differences and associations between depressive symptoms and these ruminative subtypes. Participants were children in 2nd through 7th grades (N = 303). Results of a confirmatory factor analysis supported the hypothesis that subtypes of rumination (2-factor model) are present in children and provided a better fit

Psychological and cumulative cardiovascular effects of repeated angry rumination and visuospatial suppression.

Brooding rumination is associated with depressed mood, increased negative affect, prolonged anger and inhibited cardiovascular (CV) recovery. Distraction from rumination on a stressful interpersonal encounter is associated with faster CV recovery and decreased negative affect. Studies have suggested that a concurrent visuospatial (VS) task inhibits the maintenance of imagery associated with the perseveration of intrusive negative memories. 120 healthy participants were recruited for the study. As an analogue of repeated angry rumination, the authors explored the effects of repeated visual reca

Giving yourself a good beating: appraisal, attribution, rumination, and counterfactual thinking.

How individuals respond to adversity is one component of mental toughness and athletes may manage the adversity of a defeat in very different ways. In this article we focus on four types of cognition (appraisal, attribution, counterfactual thinking, and rumination) that athletes may exhibit in the immediate aftermath of a competitive defeat. In particular we define each of these terms and present a "caricature "of each of the respective literatures, focussing on the prevailing trends and substantive findings. These caricatures assist in the identification of several areas in which literature o

A longitudinal study of rumination and distraction in formerly depressed inpatients and community controls.

The response styles theory (S. Nolen-Hoeksema, B. E. Wisco, & S. Lyubomirsky, 2008) supposes that ruminative coping is a cognitive risk factor for the course of depression, whereas distractive coping has protective effects. The authors present a longitudinal study on reciprocal relations between coping styles and depressive symptoms. They investigated 82 formerly depressed inpatients 4 weeks, 6 months, and 3.5 years after hospital discharge together with 76 age- and gender-matched community controls. Depressive symptoms predicted future symptom-focused rumination over the initial short-term in

The impact of ruminative processing on the experience of self-referent intrusive memories in dysphoria.

The current study sought to experimentally assess the differential effects of analytical ruminative processing and distraction on the experience of self-referent naturally occurring intrusive memories in a sample of dysphoric (BDI-II > or = 12) participants. Seventy-seven undergraduate participants completed a memory interview to elicit details about a self-referential intrusion and were randomly assigned to either an analytical rumination or distraction condition. Subsequent to the rumination induction, participants rated their intrusive memory as more negative, more distressing, and more evo

Rumination, reflection, intrusive thoughts, and hallucination-proneness: towards a new model.

Although rumination has been proposed to play an important role in the creation of hallucinations, direct empirical tests of this proposal have not yet been performed. Employing a distinction between ruminative and reflective self-consciousness, we set out to test a new model of the relations among rumination, reflection, intrusive thoughts, thought suppression, social anxiety, and hallucination-proneness. This model proposed that rumination would be related to hallucination-proneness through the mediating variable of intrusive thoughts, but that reflection would not be related to hallucinatio

Worry and rumination: differential associations with anxious and depressive symptoms and coping behavior.

Worry and rumination are closely allied cognitive processes that impact on the experience of anxious and depressive symptoms. Using a prospective design, this study examined overlapping and distinct features of worry and rumination in relation to symptoms and coping behavior in a nonclinical sample of Singaporean college students. Worry and rumination were highly correlated, but they retained distinct components that predicted anxious and depressive symptoms differentially within and across time. Specifically, worry was uniquely associated with anxious and depressive symptoms whereas ruminatio

Processing mode influences the relationship between trait rumination and emotional vulnerability.

Watkins (2004) found that the mode of processing adopted during expressive writing following a failure influenced emotional recovery from the failure as a function of level of trait rumination. At higher levels of trait rumination, negative mood 12 hours after the failure was greater, but only in an abstract, evaluative writing condition and not in a concrete, process-focused condition. The current study examined whether this interaction of trait rumination with processing mode would generalize to emotional vulnerability to a subsequent negative stressor. Participants repeatedly focused on bot

On the links between self-discrepancies, rumination, metacognitions, and symptoms of depression in undergraduates.

The present study aimed to test the central components of Papageorgiou and Wells' (2003) non-clinical metacognitive model of rumination and depression that is grounded on the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model of emotional disorders [Wells, A., & Matthews, G. (1994). Attention and emotion: A clinical perspective. Hove, UK: Lawrence Erlbaum.]. A second aim of this study was to extend the non-clinical model with the concept of self-discrepancy in line with the S-REF model. Data of the current study were collected in a large sample of non-clinical Dutch undergraduates (N=196), who c

The effects of self-focused rumination on global negative self-judgements in depression.

Previous research in dysphoric participants has found that compared with distraction, rumination inductions are associated with increased levels of cognitive distortions and overgeneral autobiographical memories. Watkins and Teasdale ((2001) Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 110, 353-357) investigated which component of rumination was responsible for this effect in overgeneral memory, and found two distinct modes of ruminative self-focus, with analytical, evaluative self-focus maintaining overgeneral memory, whereas self-focus low in analytical thinking reduced overgeneral memory. The present st

Effects of ruminative and distracting responses to depressed mood on retrieval of autobiographical memories.

Four studies explored the effects of self-focused rumination vs. distraction on dysphoric and nondysphoric students' retrieval of autobiographical memories. Dysphorics induced to ruminate subsequently recalled more negatively biased autobiographical memories in free recall (Study 1) and in response to prompts for memories (Study 2) than either dysphorics who first distracted themselves from their mood or nondysphoric controls. In Study 3, dysphoric rumination led students to recall negative events as occurring relatively frequently in their lives and positive events as occurring relatively inf

Case study: chewing gum treatment of rumination in an adolescent with an eating disorder.

Rumination occurs frequently in children and adolescents with eating disorders, but few studies or case reports consider rumination an associated symptom. Fewer address related treatment issues. The authors describe successful treatment of rumination in a 16-year-old female adolescent using postmeal chewing gum. Rumination should be considered in youngsters with bulimia or anorexia nervosa, and approaches to its treatment should be studied.

The rumination syndrome: clinical and manometric profile, therapy, and long-term outcome.

The aims of this study were to investigate the diagnostic studies necessary to identify rumination syndrome and the long-term therapeutic outcomes of patients with rumination syndrome. Sixteen patients with rumination were evaluated between 1989 and 1995. Esophageal motility, gastric emptying, upper gastrointestinal motility, and electrogastrography of all patients were reviewed; follow-up information about their current status was available from 10 of the 16 patients. Duration of symptoms was 77.2 months and the mean age was 28.5 years at the time of diagnosis. Esophageal and upper gastrointe
