Distribution of HLA-A, -B and -DRB1 antigenic groups and haplotypes from the Brazilian bone marrow donor registry (REDOME).

To improve assistance for patients awaiting a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor, it is important to genetically characterize the Brazilian volunteer bone marrow donors registry (REDOME). Our objective was to describe the antigenic groups and haplotype frequencies of HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-DRB1 in the five regions of Brazil and by self-reported ethnicity groups using the REDOME data. Our study included 3,038,286 individuals. HLA antigenic groups and haplotype frequencies were estimated using an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. All described HLA-A*, HLA-B* and HLA-DRB1* groups

"Being the best person that they can be and the best mum": a qualitative study of community volunteer doula support for disadvantaged mothers before and after birth in England.

BACKGROUND: Disadvantaged pregnant women and new mothers are at increased risk of psychosocial stress, anxiety and depression. As well as affecting birth outcomes and child development, poor maternal emotional wellbeing can inhibit the development of parenting self-efficacy and successful adjustment to the maternal role. Social support is a protective factor against antenatal and postnatal depression, anxiety and stress, and improves mothers' confidence in infant care. Community doula programmes have been developed to meet the social support and information needs of disadvantaged women. In the

Effect of strict oral hygiene on self-rated halitosis and quality of life in patients with periodontitis: a secondary randomized controlled trial analysis.

This single-blind, randomized clinical trial evaluated the impact of a strict oral hygiene (OH) phase on self-reported halitosis and quality of life (QoL) in patients with periodontitis. This study reports a secondary analysis of a single-blind randomized controlled trial (parallel, 1:1), registered at RBR-5jmx32v. The study included 24 individuals diagnosed with periodontitis who were randomly assigned to the intervention group (IG; n = 12) and the no-intervention group (NIG; n = 12). After receiving personalized OH instructions, the IG participants followed a rigorous OH phase for 45 days, w

A Nudge Theory-Based Mobile Health Intervention for Self-Management in Young and Middle-Aged Patients With Hypertension: Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Young and middle-aged patients with hypertension often show poor self-management due to limited cognitive bandwidth. Mobile health apps using behavioral economics may be helpful for these patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness and usability of a nudge-based mobile app (LeYi) for improving self-management in young and middle-aged patients with hypertension. METHODS: This mixed-methods pilot study used a single-group pre-post design. Thirty participants completed a 24-week intervention. Outcomes were assessed using validated scales and inter

Preliminary feasibility of animated video education designed to empower patients' referral to kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Referral for kidney transplantation is influenced by patient education; digital technologies can enhance broad information accessibility. This single-group study tested the feasibility and acceptability of patient-centered self-directed educational animated videos to improve mediators of kidney transplant referral. METHODS: Community-based adults with chronic kidney disease stage ≥4 invited from a clinical registry or self-responding to flyers viewed eight sequential videos (19:36 min total duration) remotely on their own device. Dental fear, regularity of dental attendance and subjective evaluation of dental erosion in women with eating disorders.

This questionnaire study, with a response rate of 53%, examined self-induced vomiting, erosions and dental attendance in women with eating disorders (EDs) as well as dental fear and its effect on attendance and communication with the dentist. A survey of 371 responding women with EDs, who were recruited from a self-help organization, revealed that dental fear was higher in women with EDs compared to the general population. Dental fear was present in 32.1% of women with EDs, and very high dental fear was present in 16.5% of women with EDs. Of those with very high dental fear, 32.3% had not visi

Pharmakon or the healing art: experience of artistic-transformative transdisciplinary workshops in fibromyalgia syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic pain syndrome often related to trauma and stress. A multidisciplinary therapeutic approach is recommended. Transformative experiences (TE) allow for a profound and immediate change that helps breaking the maladaptive emotional/behavioural loop elicited by chronic stress and trauma. In this study, TE was specifically elicited through transformative art (TA) in different ways. Aim of this study is the validation of the efficacy (in terms of quality of life and sleep, self-esteem, self-efficacy) of transdisciplinary artistic-transformative pathw

Transforming nursing students' attitudes toward death through the "caring for life in death" program: a quasi-experimental, longitudinal, mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care education may be insufficient, resulting in gaps in healthcare students' knowledge and emotional management skills when caring for palliative patients and their families. Training programs addressing personal and professional limitations while promoting self-awareness and growth could help close these gaps. This quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of the "Caring for Life in Death" Program on perceptions of death, communication skills, and emotional self-regulation in healthcare students. METHODS: Two hundred nine nursing students from the School of He

Natural vs. Surgical Postmenopause and Psychological Symptoms Confound the Effect of Menopause on Executive Functioning Domains of Cognitive Experience.

OBJECTIVE: The menopause transition is associated with difficulties in executive function. However, it is unclear whether these difficulties persist past perimenopause. This study investigated whether potential confounders, including natural vs. surgical postmenopause and menopause-related psychological symptoms, influence whether executive dysfunction persists into postmenopause. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional sample of women aged 35-65 years (N = 1971) in one of four groups, premenopause, perimenopause, natural postmenopause, and surgical postmenopause, were surveyed. Empirical examination of executive functioning, ADHD associated behaviors, and functional impairments in adults with persistent ADHD, remittent ADHD, and without ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may continue in adulthood, producing adverse effects. Therefore, identifying factors that help to differentiate characteristics of ADHD persistence and remission has practical implications for evaluation and treatment. The first aim of this study was to analyze differences in executive functions (shift, working memory, inhibition, and plan/organize), symptoms associated with ADHD (inattention, hyperactivity, emotional lability, and self-concept), and functional impairments in adults with persist

Development and Validation of the Brief Sussex-Oxford Compassion Scales.

Compassion for self or others involves recognizing suffering, understanding its universality, feeling for the person suffering, tolerating distress, and being motivated to help. Existing measures, such as the Sussex-Oxford Compassion Scales for the Self (SOCS-S) and Others (SOCS-O), are comprehensive but lengthy. This study derived 5-item short forms of each scale (Brief SOCS-S and Brief SOCS-O) based on the original SOCS item loadings and theoretical representation of the five compassion components, preserving construct coverage while reducing burden. The scales were examined across students

A Social Identity Approach to Understanding and Promoting Physical Activity.

Against the backdrop of a global physical inactivity crisis, attempts to both understand and positively influence physical activity behaviours are characterized by a focus on individual-level factors (e.g. cognitions, attitudes, motivation). We outline a new perspective, drawn from an emerging body of work exploring the applicability of social identity and self-categorization theories to domains of sport and health, from which to understand and address this pervasive problem. This social identity approach suggests that the groups to which people belong can be, and often are, incorporated into
