Substance abuse and homelessness: direct or indirect effects?

PURPOSE: To investigate whether substance abuse is a direct factor in the explanation of homelessness or one that operates indirectly through disaffiliation and human capital processes to place individuals at greater risk of the condition. METHODS: Analyses were conducted using data on substance abuse and homeless experiences from a random probability sample of 481 homeless persons and those at risk of homelessness in Cook County, Illinois. Covariance structure models were used to assess substance abuse, human capital, and disaffiliation as potential precursors of homelessness, with particula

Who mixes with whom? A method to determine the contact patterns of adults that may lead to the spread of airborne infections.

Although mixing patterns are thought to be important determinants of the spread of airborne infectious diseases, to our knowledge, there have been no attempts to directly quantify them for humans. We report on a preliminary study to identify such mixing patterns. A sample of 92 adults were asked to detail the individuals with whom they had conversed over the period of one, randomly assigned, day. Sixty-five (71%) completed the questionnaire, providing their age, the age of their contacts and the social context in which the contacts took place. The data were analysed using multilevel modelling.

A brief but comprehensive three-item social connectedness screener for use in social risk assessment tools.

BACKGROUND: The 2014 IOM report "Capturing Social and Behavioral Domains and Measures in Electronic Health Records" described three subdomains of social relationships that affect patient health and well-being. However, most social risk screeners currently assess only one subdomain, frequency of social connections. We are proposing a three-item Brief Social Connectedness (SC) screener that additionally assesses risks in social/emotional support and loneliness/social isolation subdomains. METHODS: For this cross-sectional study, we used data from a 2021 Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KP

The landscape of structural variation in coppery titi monkeys ( Plecturocebus cupreus ).

Coppery titi monkeys ( Plecturocebus cupreus ) are an important non-human primate model for studying neurobiology and social behavior, in part owing to their relatively unusual combination of social monogamy and paternal care. Despite this importance, relatively little is known regarding the underlying population genomics of this platyrrhine. This study presents high-coverage, whole-genome sequencing data from 26 individuals which, combined with a highly accurate multi-algorithm ensemble approach, was used to characterize the first map of structural variation in the species. This novel genomic

Factors influencing kinesiophobia after thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery: A cross-sectional study based on structural equation modeling.

The level and incidence of kinesiophobia in patients with lung cancer after thoracoscopic surgery are at a high level, which seriously affects the patient's exercise compliance and ultimately affects the recovery process. The study of kinesiophobia is still in its preliminary stage, and there are few studies on kinesiophobia in patients after lung cancer surgery. In addition, existing studies focus on the influencing factors of kinesiophobia and ignore the mechanism of kinesiophobia, resulting in a relatively single intervention. This study explores the relationship between variables through s

"Getting out of downtown": a longitudinal study of how street-entrenched youth attempt to exit an inner city drug scene.

BACKGROUND: Urban drug "scenes" have been identified as important risk environments that shape the health of street-entrenched youth. New knowledge is needed to inform policy and programing interventions to help reduce youths' drug scene involvement and related health risks. The aim of this study was to identify how young people envisioned exiting a local, inner-city drug scene in Vancouver, Canada, as well as the individual, social and structural factors that shaped their experiences. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2016, we draw on 150 semi-structured interviews with 75 street-entrenched youth. W

Measurement Properties of PROMIS Measures Relevant to Chronic Skin Diseases.

IMPORTANCE: Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) is a generalized set of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) that can be readily integrated into the dermatologic clinic setting, but the measurement properties of these PROMs among patients with a range of chronic skin diseases have yet to be established. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the structural validity, internal consistency, construct validity, and responsiveness of PROMIS short-form measures for anxiety, depression, social satisfaction, and social isolation as well as the construct validity and responsiveness

Marginalization of Maltreatment of Family Caregivers of Older People in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Epistemic Injustice?

This theoretical paper interrogates aging and caregiving, focusing on the abuse of caregivers of older people in Sub-Saharan Africa, through the lenses of Epistemic Injustice, Social Identity, and Feminist Theories. Epistemic Injustice shows how societal structures silence caregivers' voices. Social Identity emphasises communal values over individual well-being, thereby silencing accounts of abuse. Feminist Theory highlights how gender roles increase female caregivers' vulnerability. Recognising these intersectional influences could foster inclusive discourse on caregiver well-being. The paper

A Community-Engaged Social Marketing Campaign to Promote Equitable Access to COVID-19 Services Among Latino Immigrants.

To address disparities in COVID-19 outcomes among Latinos with limited English proficiency in Maryland, our team developed a culturally congruent intervention that coupled a statewide social marketing campaign with community-based COVID-19 services. In the first year, we reached 305 122 people through social media advertisements and had 9607 visitors to the Web site. Social marketing campaigns represent an opportunity to promote COVID-19 testing and vaccine uptake among Latino populations, especially when they are paired with community services that simultaneously address structural barriers t

Social Justice as a Tool to Eliminate Inequities in Kidney Disease.

Kidney disease has disparate effects on racial and ethnic minority groups, who have higher rates of chronic kidney disease and generally poorer outcomes. These disparate rates and outcomes have been attributed to social determinants of health; however, these social determinants of health are related to governmental and societal structural barriers that have created inequities not only in kidney disease, but also in other chronic diseases and in maternal/fetal health outcomes. The societal barriers to health equity include income inequality, inadequate education, environmental injustice, mass i

Making the leap and finding your feet: A qualitative study of disclosure and social support in university students with type 1 diabetes.

University poses unique challenges surrounding disclosure for students living with type 1 diabetes, with implications for social support and self-management. Semi-structured interviews with students and peer interviewers living with type 1 diabetes explored university experiences of disclosure and social support. Thematic analysis identified three major themes: disclosure as a measured process, the need for lived experience for true understanding and personal growth and self-awareness. Findings emphasize the need to scaffold the university transition for individuals with type 1 diabetes as dis

Social support needs of bereaved parents and family members after perinatal loss: A qualitative study.

Perinatal loss is a profoundly distressing experience for many families. While family and friends are often primary sources of informal support for bereaved parents, they may find it challenging to provide the support parents need. This study explores the social support experiences of parents and family members navigating perinatal bereavement in Australia with their informal social networks, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 20 parents and 5 family members. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three themes, along with seven sub-themes reflecting how informal support was enacted, ne

Exploring the social-behavioral-cognitive pathways to English learning self-efficacy in college students.

English learning self-efficacy is a critical psychological factor associated with college students' engagement and persistence in English learning, yet its relationships with the social environment, health behaviors (e.g., physical activity), and cognitive resources have rarely been examined within an integrated framework. Based on social cognitive theory, this study constructed a structural model to examine the direct and indirect associations of social support, physical activity, and a cognitive construct operationalized as self-reported cognitive functioning with college students' English l

Social-ecological resilience: Knowledge of agrobiodiversity by campesinos and migrants in the face of global changes.

There is concern that agrobiodiversity is being irreversibly eroded in the face of agricultural industrialization. While academic and policy debates stress loss of landraces, little attention has been paid to evaluating how agricultural knowledge systems endure in response to broader social-ecological changes (i.e., "system's resilience"). For being resilient, agricultural knowledge systems should incorporate new information (modern seed varieties) whilst maintaining its traditional components (landraces) and functions. However, the loss or continuing utilization of landraces may be influenced

A synthesis of dimensions of wellbeing among adolescents and young people living with HIV from Sub-Saharan Africa for measurement in economic evaluation: a qualitative overview of reviews.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young people living with HIV (AYPLHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face intersecting structural and psychosocial challenges that compromise their wellbeing, yet these realities are poorly captured by generic wellbeing measures used in economic evaluations. This overview of reviews synthesised evidence from SSA to identify key determinants of social wellbeing to inform the co-development of a contextually relevant wellbeing scale suitable for economic evaluations in the region. METHODS: We searched reviews published between January 2000 and September 2023 across ten

The mediating effects of parental hope and psychological resilience on social support and decision conflict in children with hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: The most common congenital genital abnormality of the urinary system in infants is hypospadias; its frequency is rising to 0.33 percent globally. Surgical reconstruction is the most effective treatment for hypospadias.Parents, as surrogate decision-makers for children, frequently experience decision-making conflicts when making decisions. Stress is neither a straightforward stimulus nor a simple response. However, a stressor (stimulus) caused by life events and influenced by numerous intermediate factors including personality, social support, and psychosomatic symptoms or disease

Assessing Internal States In Children With Neuromuscular Disorders Through An Oral Narrative Task.

OBJECTIVE: Neuromuscular disorders (NMD) are rare, chronic diseases affecting muscle and nerve function, leading to motor, cognitive, and socio-emotional challenges. While physical and cognitive aspects have been widely studied, socio-emotional functioning remains underexplored. This study assessed the feasibility of using invented oral stories to examine internal state language in children with NMD compared to typically developing peers. METHOD: Forty 5-12 years old children (20 with NMD, 20 typically developing) spontaneously narrated fictional stories, analyzed for structure, cohesion, and

Factor Structure, Convergent, and Divergent Validity of the Prodromal Questionnaire-Negative Symptom Subscale.

Negative symptoms such as anhedonia are associated with psychosis risk and poorer outcomes. The Prodromal Questionnaire (PQ) is a self-report questionnaire used to screen for psychosis spectrum symptoms. However, the convergent and divergent validity and underlying factor structure of the PQ-negative symptom subscale (PQ-N) have yet to be examined. Undergraduates (N = 1,556) completed the PQ, Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale, and measures assessing anxiety, depression, and motivation. An exploratory factor analysis conducted on the PQ-N yielded a two-factor solution, reflecting subdimensi

Turkish Version of the Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse: Preliminary Psychometrics in College Students.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the basic psychometrics of the Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse (MMEA; Murphy & Hoover, 1999) in a Turkish sample. Two hundred and fifty-four college students participated and completed the Turkish version of the MMEA (MMEA-TR) along with the Physical Assault of Conflict Tactics Scale-Revised, Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory, Relationship Assessment Scale, and Social Desirability Questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor structure of the MMEA-TR for both victimization and perpetration reports. T
