Bone is a complex tissue whose composition and properties vary with age, sex, diet, tissue type, health and disease. In this review, we demonstrate how infrared spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopic imaging can be applied to the study of these variations. A specific example of mice with Fabry disease (a lipid storage disease) is presented in which it is demonstrated that the bones of these young animals, while showing typical spatial variation in mineral content, mineral crystal size, and collagen maturity, do not differ from the bones of age- and sex-matched wild type animals.

This paper discussed the quantitative influence of Cu(II) on the interaction between horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and sulfite (SO3(2-)), which is a derivate of sulfite dioxide in human bodies, by using fluorescence spectrum and ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectrometry in vitro. In this paper we present the first study of the VUV photoabsorption spectrum of condensed phase SO(2) recorded over the VUV region 120 to 320 nm (10.33 to 3.64 eV). Distinct spectral features were observed that can be used to distinguish between the formation of amorphous and crystalline ice structures. These signatures may then be used to probe the formation of different ice structures as a function of both deposition rate and substrate temperature.

Little information is available on the lipid changes caused by Schistosoma mansoni reinfection. In this work it was evaluated alteration in the plasma lipids due to one reinfection by Schistosoma mansoni in the non human primate Callithrix jacchus (sagüi). Blood samples from C. jacchus, prior and after 60 days infection and reinfection, were collected by intravenous puncture, anticoagulated with EDTA (1mg/mL) and centrifuged at 2,500 xg, in order to obtain the plasma. Total cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, total phospholipid and triglyceride levels were determined by spectrophotometer methods.

The photophysics of 3-benzoxazol-2-yl-chromen-2-one was studied in different solvents. High molar absorptivities, between 14,800 and 22,900 dm3/mol cm, were observed for the absorption peak related to the S0 --> S1 transition which suggests a pi --> pi* character. A conformational study on Barbituric (BA) and Thiobarbituric (TBA) acids was performed at ab initio MP2/6-31G** level on the neutral, protonated, mono- and di-anionic forms. Acid-base equilibria were studied by comparing the electronic transitions evaluated for the most stable conformations and the experimental spectra at different pH values. The chemistry of SO2 solutions was studied with infrared transmission and total internal reflection (ATR) spectroscopy. The cross-sections of the SO2 stretching vibrations v1, v3 and the combination band of v1 + v3 were obtained and found to be slightly different from their gas phase values.
