Total glossectomy without laryngectomy - a review of functional outcomes and reconstructive principles.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an overview of functional outcomes and reconstructive principles of total glossectomy without laryngectomy reported in recent series, and the evidence regarding which patients are at risk for poor functional outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: After total glossectomy with laryngeal preservation gastric tube dependency ranges from 30 to 44% for primary treatment. Between 85 and 95% of patients are able to have their tracheostomy tube removed. Many patients can also regain meaningfully intelligible speech. In the setting of prior radiation or chemoradiation therapy, achievi

Treatment of Phonological Disorder: A Feasibility Study With Focus on Outcome Measures.

PURPOSE: In a feasibility study for a randomized controlled trial of treatments for phonological disorders conducted over a period of 8 months, we examined 6 clinically relevant outcome measures. We took steps to reduce error variance and to maximize systematic variance. METHOD: Six children received traditional treatment (Van Riper, 1939), and 7 received expansion points (Smit, 2000), a treatment program with both phonological and traditional elements. Outcome measures, which were applied to both word list and conversational samples, included percentage of consonants correct (PCC; Shriberg &

Comprehensive treatment of massive macroglossia due to venous and lymphatic malformations.

This study evaluated the outcomes of comprehensive treatment for massive macroglossia. Eleven patients with massive macroglossia due to venous malformations (VMs) and lymphatic malformations (LMs) underwent incision excision of two-thirds of the central wedge of the tongue; two of these patients underwent resection of lesions in the lower lip or floor of the mouth during initial treatment. In subsequent treatment, three patients underwent orthognathic surgery or resection of lesions in the lower lip and submental region, and four patients underwent one or two sclerotherapies. No patient had co

Development of the Farsi Hearing in Noise Test.

Objectives: Develop sentences in Farsi for use in the Hearing In Noise Test (HINT); equalise the difficulty of the sentences; form twelve 20-sentence lists; and determine the reliability and norms for these materials.Design: The same study design as used in the development of HINT in other languages was followed. Sentences were sampled from elementary school reading materials. Sentence difficulty was matched by scaling sentence levels. Equivalent sentence lists were formed. Speech reception thresholds were measured under headphones in quiet and in three noise conditions that differed in the sp

The Neural Cost of Language Processing: Broader Network Recruitment in Adults With Developmental Language Disorder.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent difficulties in language comprehension and production, despite otherwise typical cognitive abilities. Although DLD is most commonly studied in children, it often persists into adulthood, yet little is known about the neural substrates underlying language abilities in adults with DLD. To address this gap, we examined 50 adults with (n = 23) and without (n = 27) DLD using an fMRI language localizer paradigm. Participants passively listened to intelligible and acoustically degraded speech to assess

Use of Meludia to evaluate the effect of music training in cochlear implant users: study protocol of a randomised controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Although most cochlear implant (CI) users achieve good speech understanding in quiet without visual cues, they may have limited speech understanding in noise and often have poor music perception. The present study was designed to investigate the degree to which the use of Meludia training can improve music perception, music enjoyment and speech understanding in paediatric and postlingually deafened adult CI users. The study also aims to assess the participants' changes in cognitive skills (attention and memory) and quality of life. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This randomised controlle

Multimodal processing in face-to-face interactions: A bridging link between psycholinguistics and sensory neuroscience.

In face-to-face communication, humans are faced with multiple layers of discontinuous multimodal signals, such as head, face, hand gestures, speech and non-speech sounds, which need to be interpreted as coherent and unified communicative actions. This implies a fundamental computational challenge: optimally binding only signals belonging to the same communicative action while segregating signals that are not connected by the communicative content. How do we achieve such an extraordinary feat, reliably, and efficiently? To address this question, we need to further move the study of human commun

COVID-19 and Computer Audition: An Overview on What Speech & Sound Analysis Could Contribute in the SARS-CoV-2 Corona Crisis.

At the time of writing this article, the world population is suffering from more than 2 million registered COVID-19 disease epidemic-induced deaths since the outbreak of the corona virus, which is now officially known as SARS-CoV-2. However, tremendous efforts have been made worldwide to counter-steer and control the epidemic by now labelled as pandemic. In this contribution, we provide an overview on the potential for computer audition (CA), i.e., the usage of speech and sound analysis by artificial intelligence to help in this scenario. We first survey which types of related or contextually

Explainable multimodal feature fusion networks for Parkinson's disease prediction.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor impairments, where early diagnosis remains challenging due to reliance on subjective clinical assessments. Recent artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches have demonstrated promise in identifying subtle PD biomarkers from individual modalities such as speech, gait, and handwriting; however, unimodal systems often fail to capture the heterogeneity of the disease and provide limited interpretability. To address these limitations, this study proposes a multimodal deep learning framework

Evaluation of the performance of an artificial intelligence model in recognizing the habitual mixed language in Taiwan for generating periodontal charting text reports.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: "Periodontal charting" in Taiwan typically involves a two-person collaboration. However, while advances in voice technology has made it feasible to use voice recognition to reduce these manpower demands in English-speaking countries, these artificial intelligent (AI) voice recognition tools have lacked localized features to make them feasible in our context of Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To fill this research gap, we integrated GPT-4o-transcribe and GPT-4.1-mini into a two-stage system for this study, where stage 1 worked on speech-to-text and stage 2 focused on text-to

Cleft lip/palate and educational attainment: cause, consequence or correlation? A Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that children born with a non-syndromic orofacial cleft have lower-than-average educational attainment. Differences could be due to a genetic predisposition to low intelligence and academic performance, factors arising due to the cleft phenotype (such as social stigmatization, impaired speech/language development) or confounding by the prenatal environment. A clearer understanding of this mechanism will inform interventions to improve educational attainment in individuals born with a cleft, which could substantially improve their quality of life. We asse

Density, frequency and the expressive phonology of children with phonological delay.

The effect of word-level variables on expressive phonology has not been widely studied, although the properties of words likely bear on the emergence of sound structure (Stoel-Gammon, 2011). Eight preschoolers, diagnosed with phonological delay, were assigned to treatment to experimentally induce gains in expressive phonology. Erred sounds were taught using stimulus words that varied orthogonally in neighborhood density and word frequency as the independent variables. Generalization was the dependent variable, defined as production accuracy of treated and untreated (erred) sounds. Blocked comp

AI-Driven Web-Based Speech Transcription Tool: A Novel Approach for Efficient Evaluation of Verbal Memory Performance.

Memory deficits are prevalent in epilepsy and other brain disorders, significantly affecting quality of life. In particular, patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy require ongoing monitoring and repeated memory assessments to track cognitive function, which could benefit from automated transcription tools. We used a classic free recall (FR) verbal memory task, where participants recalled words, to assess their performance by recording, transcribing, and detecting vocalizations of correctly remembered words. Conventional manual speech transcription methods are time-consuming and prone to h
