Recent advances in natural product-based anti-biofilm approaches to control infections.

Bacterial biofilms are highly organized surface-associated communities of bacteria encased within an extracellular matrix produced by themselves, capable of growing in connection with different biological or inert surfaces such as artificial joints or catheters. Biofilms are commonly associated with many health problems, such as endocarditis, otitis media, periodontitis, prostatitis, and urinary tract infections. Several bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or fungal pathogen as Candida albicans, can form biofilms in the b…

Influence of short-term sucrose exposure on plaque acidogenicity and cariogenic microflora in individuals with different levels of mutans streptococci.

The aim was to study the short-term effect of a varying sucrose exposure on plaque acidogenicity and cariogenic microflora in two groups of subjects with different levels of mutans streptococci (MS). Eight subjects with low (<10(4)) and 8 with high (>10(6)) numbers of MS per millilitre saliva participated. Three 7-day test periods were conducted. During two of these, the subjects rinsed either 5 or 10 times daily with 10% sucrose; the third period without any mouth rinses served as control. The subjects refrained from oral hygiene during the last 3 days of each test period. On day 7, the follo

Streptococcus sobrinus antigens that react to salivary antibodies induced by tonsillar application of formalin-killed S. sobrinus in rabbits.

We previously found that tonsillar application of antigen induces a strong antibody response to Streptococcus sobrinus in saliva and blood plasma. Rabbits immunized against S. sobrinus by tonsillar application were highly resistant to experimental dental caries triggered by oral inoculation of living S. sobrinus organisms with sucrose. In the present study, we examined the reaction of S. sobrinus antigens to the antibodies induced by the tonsillar application of S. sobrinus AHT-k in rabbits and compared them to those antibodies induced by intramuscular injection. In an enzyme-linked immunosorb

Salivary defense factors and oral health in patients with common variable immunodeficiency.

Studies of oral health in patients with common variable immunodeficiency have given controversial results. Obviously, one major factor modifying the oral health of these patients is saliva, in which the antibody-mediated defense is remarkably impaired compared to that of healthy subjects. However, the occurrence of nonimmunoglobulin (innate) antimicrobial agents in saliva of these patients is virtually unknown. Therefore, we analyzed both immune (total IgA, IgG, IgM, anti-Streptococcus mutans IgA, IgG, and IgM antibodies) and nonimmune (lysozyme, lactoferrin, salivary peroxidase, myeloperoxida…

In vitro antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles synthesis by lasers against teeth caries bacteria (S-mutans).

Antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles prepared by lasers was examined on S.mutans bacteria. Using two different lasers mechanisms allows comparative studies to identify the most effective NP properties against S. mutans. Dual-laser synthesis may create synergistic effects, improving antibacterial performance compared to chemically synthesized Ag NPs. Fiber and Nd: YAG lasers were employed to synthesized silver nanoparticles with various size distribution by laser ablation and subsequently laser fragmentation. Pulsed laser ablation was employed in liquid by Nd: YAG with wavelength of 1
