Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Advances in the neurobiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the availability of modern psychotropics have led to renewed interest in the pharmacotherapy of this disorder. In this paper we focus on trials of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in PTSD. Studies of the pharmacotherapy of PTSD were identified using methods developed by the Cochrane collaboration. Although a range of open trials of different SSRIs in PTSD show promise, there are few controlled pharmacotherapy studies in this disorder. Nevertheless, pharmacotherapy for PTSD appears to have reasonably ro

Herbal Neuroprotection Meets Stress-Induced Neuropathology: Bojungikgi-Tang Modulates the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis and GABAergic Pathways in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and alterations in neurotransmitters (gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate) are the main pathologies of PTSD. In particular, altered GABAergic neurotransmission and reduced GABA activity are linked to PTSD. Given the low efficacy and side effects of serotonin reuptake inhibitors-the most common treatment for PTSD-a safer and more effective treatment is urgently needed. Bojungikgi-tang (BJ

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: The Influence of the Environmental Context and Analysis of Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory and Glycemic Markers in Women Living in Kurdistan Regional Government-Iraq.

Background Internally displaced persons (IDP) camps are still home to a large number of female survivors of the Yazidi genocide carried out in Iraq in 2014 by the Islamic organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Many of these women suffer from a persistent form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can last for many years. On the other hand, little is known about the intricate etiology of PTSD. Objectives In this observational cross-sectional study, the biochemical parameters, including inflammatory and oxidative stress (OXS) markers, were evaluated in two gr

N-acetylcysteine for patients with alcohol use disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and their co-occurrence: a systematic review of placebo-controlled randomized trials.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are thought to be significant global contributors to the burden of mental illness. According to recent WHO epidemiological estimates, 3.9% of people worldwide have experienced PTSD at some point in their lives; this number rises to roughly 5.6% among those who have experienced trauma. NAC has shown promise in reducing PTSD symptoms and cravings in veterans, according to recent trials. Our analysis aims to resolve the conflict between results and determine whether NAC is an effective add-on therapy for PTSD, AUD,

Ketamine effects on EEG and their links to therapy differ across treatment-resistant major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Neurotic disorders-major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and specific phobia-have differing pharmaceutical profiles. But all, even when resistant to conventional treatment (TR), respond quickly to low-dose (0.5-1.0 mg/kg I.M.) ketamine. We explore the variation in the neural effects of ketamine across its treatments of TR-MDD, TR-PTSD, and TR-OCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recorded 10 min of resting frontal activity and diagnosis-related s

Nationwide Assessment of Chronic Pain among Hospitalized Individuals with Co-occurring Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorder in the United States.

Objective: Chronic pain (CP) is independently associated with substance use disorders (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, little is known about factors associated with CP among patients with co-occurring PTSD and SUD. Patterns of hospital resource usage should also be explored further. Methods: Using the 2019 National Inpatient Sample (NIS), we identified 216,125 hospital discharges with co-occurring diagnoses of PTSD and SUD in 2019 and examined their association with CP. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with an increased l

Unreal that feels real: artificial intelligence-enhanced augmented reality for treating social and occupational dysfunction in post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders.

Background: Fear- and trauma-related conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social phobia, often manifest as socially avoidant behaviours, which commonly contribute to social and occupational disability transdiagnostically. While gold-standard treatments (i.e. exposure therapy, psychotropic medications) are effective, they are hindered by high dropout rates and limited impact on real-world functioning. Furthermore, most existing interventions only target symptom reduction, with few addressing avoidance-related deficits in social and occupational functioning. Objectives: T

Potential Resilience to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Common Mental Disorders among Lay Health Workers Working on the Friendship Bench Programme in Zimbabwe.

PURPOSE: The Friendship Bench is a successful task-shifting intervention for addressing common mental disorders in Zimbabwe. The intervention takes a cognitive behavioural therapy and problem-solving approach provided by lay health workers (LHWs). The LHWs live in the same environment as their clients and are thus exposed to the same traumas and stressors as are their clients. Little is known about the long-term psychological effects on LHWs involved in this type of work. METHODS: A random sample of LHWs (n=182) was assessed using the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5) and the Sh

Prevalence of acute and post-traumatic stress disorder and comorbid mental disorders in breast cancer patients during primary cancer care: a prospective study.

This study aimed at the identification of acute and post-traumatic stress responses, and comorbid mental disorders in breast cancer patients. Structured clinical interviews for DSM-IV (SCID) were conducted post-surgery with 127 patients (t1). Screening measures were used to assess post-traumatic stress responses, anxiety, and depression at t1 and at 6 months follow-up (t2). Based on the SCID, prevalence rates were 2.4% for both, cancer-related ASD and PTSD. Experiences most frequently described as traumatic were the cancer diagnosis itself and subsequent feelings of uncertainty. Patients with

A single center cross-sectional study examining the prevalence of inpatient postpartum anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5.

BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions are now the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States, prompting calls for universal postpartum anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder screening. However, standardized guidelines for screening implementation remain deficient. This cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of inpatient postpartum anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder while exploring associated risk factors. OBJECTIVES: Over a three-week period, we prospectively assessed adult postpartum patients following all delivery modes (vaginal and cesarean, live and stillb

A Cross-Sectional Time Course of COVID-19 Related Worry, Perceived Stress, and General Anxiety in the Context of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder-like Symptomatology.

The COVID-19 pandemic within the United States of America resulted in over 800,000 deaths as of February 2022 and has been addressed by social distancing or stay-at-home measures. Collective prolonged multimodal trauma on this scale is likely to elicit symptomatology in the general population consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), somatization, anxiety, and stress. The psychological component of this response contributes substantially to the burden of this disease worldwide. This cross-sectional study examines the relationship between COVID-19-related concern, anxiety, and perc
