Visual Attention to Facial Defects Predicts Willingness to Pay for Reconstructive Surgery.

Background: The relationship between the value of reconstructive surgery and the visual attention drawn by facial deformity has not been studied. Objectives: We hypothesized that willingness to pay (WTP) for reconstructive surgery would increase as visual attention to deformity increased in a Mohs defect eye-tracking model. Methods: We conducted a randomized observational study. Eighty casual observers participated in timed eye-tracking trials utilizing preoperative and postoperative photographs from 32 patients with facial Mohs defects. Fixation on each defect was quantified in milliseconds.

Historical Perspectives on the Management of Craniosynostosis.

The history of craniofacial surgery is one of many fundamental advances by monumental figures. Although craniosynostosis has been known to exist for multiple centuries, modern management has evolved over roughly the last century. An overview of early history, early scientific exploration, the advancement of surgical treatment of craniofacial deformities and the current state of craniosynostosis management is discussed. To fully appreciate the evolution of craniosynostosis surgery, one must understand the gradual advancements that have brought the specialty to this modern era.

Static Sling Options for Facial Paralysis: Now Versus 10 Years Ago.

Static facial sling procedures are one of many facial reanimation options to address long-standing and irreversible facial paralysis. The primary goals of static reanimation are to provide symmetry at rest and improve static function at repose. Choosing the best option depends on patient factors, such as age, comorbidities, and injury factors. Different materials are available for static sling surgery; we believe autologous tendon offers the most reliable and long-lasting results. Static suspension procedures provide immediate results, improved resting position, and can augment other technique

Perception of Risk Among Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: With continuous innovation in plastic surgery, new procedures are constantly being introduced. A number of these procedures are generally safe but have the potential for rare yet serious complications. Many surgeons steer clear of these procedures due to safety concerns. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper was to survey the membership of The Aesthetic Society to elicit perception of risk of several novel or less mainstream procedures. METHODS: A 24-item survey was sent out to members of The Aesthetic Society. The survey focused on surgeon experience and attitude towards 3 procedure

Translation of mechanical strain to a scalable biomanufacturing process for acellular matrix production from full thickness porcine bladders.

Bladder acellular matrix has promising applications in urological and other reconstructive surgery as it represents a naturally compliant, non-immunogenic and highly tissue-integrative material. As the bladder fills and distends, the loosely-coiled bundles of collagen fibres in the wall become extended and orientate parallel to the lumen, resulting in a physical thinning of the muscular wall. This accommodating property can be exploited to achieve complete decellularisation of the full-thickness bladder wall by immersing the distended bladder through a series of hypotonic buffers, detergents a

Midline Cervical Cleft: An Anatomical Finding and a Proposal for a New Approach.

Congenital midline cervical cleft is a rare malformation. Typical case shows an area of hypotrophic skin, a cranial nipple-like structure, and a caudal blind sinus. Cervical extension is limited. Relapse of the retraction is common following cutaneous z-plasty. The aim of this study is to describe the radiological, surgical, and histological findings of the 4 cases treated in our center in the last 8 years and communicate the finding of a contractile structure, anterior to the platysma, composed by striated muscle, figure not previously described. This distinct muscular band is responsible for

Spring Cranioplasty: Incorporation Into Practice.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to discuss ways to incorporate spring-assisted cranioplasty into the surgical armamentarium for craniosynostosis. BACKGROUND: Spring-assisted cranioplasty after cranial suturectomy for craniosynostosis was popularized in the literature by Dr Lauritzen in 2008 after reporting the results of the first 100 cases. Since that time, more craniofacial surgeons and neurological surgeons have incorporated this surgical technique for treatment of patients presenting with craniosynostosis. This paper will discuss how the team at Nationwide Children's Hospital has inco

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Most Cited Articles in Global Reconstructive Surgery.

BACKGROUND: A substantial global inequality exists between surgical need and the availability of safe, affordable surgical care. Low- and middle-income countries have the greatest burden of untreated surgical disease and addressing this inequity is the goal of the Global Surgery movement. Reconstructive surgery is a fundamental component of Global Surgery as it is central to the appropriate treatment of trauma, burns, wounds, and congenital malformations. The objective of this study was to analyze the most frequently cited articles in the field of global reconstructive surgery to understand th

Management of Complex Mandible Fractures.

Mandible fractures represent a common sequela of craniomaxillofacial trauma encountered by reconstructive surgeons. Management of complex mandibular fractures, and reestablishment of the occlusal relationship, represents a challenging reconstructive endeavor for even the most skilled surgeon. In this article, the authors review the treatment options for particularly complex presentations of this injury pattern.

[Secondary surgery of the external ear].

Secondary surgeries of the external ear can be divided into two categories: secondary otoplasties and secondary ear reconstructions. The most frequent causes of secondary otoplasties are a recurrence, an over-corrected ear, an off-center ear, a prominent lobule, and finally chronic ear pain. Recurrence of the prominence can be treated by a new posterior stitch otoplasty, an Earfold clip, or a frame stitch. The over-corrected ear can be projected either by costal cartilage grafts or by hyaluronic acids. Patients who are unsatisfied of the aesthetic result of their prominent ear correction usual
