Ectoparasites of Cattle.

Diverse groups of ectoparasitic arthropods cause significant morbidity and mortality in most of the approximately 1.49 billion head of cattle worldwide. Hematophagous ectoparasites (ie, blood-feeding flies, myiasis-causing flies, lice, mites, ticks) are the most important in cattle. Intense use of ectoparasiticides to treat infestations can result in ectoparasite populations becoming resistant to this treatment method. Approaches integrating the use of different technologies are required to manage cattle ectoparasites effectively while addressing societal expectations regarding food safety and

Suspected Lyme borreliosis in sheep.

Two cases of suspected Lyme borreliosis in lambs are described. The clinical signs observed resemble those described for Lyme borreliosis in dogs and horses. The lambs were approximately six months old and came from two different flocks in a district heavily infested with Ixodes ricinus ticks. The lambs had pronounced lameness in one leg, generally bad condition and poor appetite. They had high serum levels of IgG antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi when tested in an ELISA. The other lambs in the flocks were negative to B burgdorferi antibodies. Attempts were made to isolate spirochaetes from o

Discovery and mode of action of afoxolaner, a new isoxazoline parasiticide for dogs.

Afoxolaner is an isoxazoline compound characterized by a good safety profile and extended effectiveness against fleas and ticks on dogs following a single oral administration. In vitro membrane feeding assay data and in vivo pharmacokinetic studies in dogs established an afoxolaner blood concentration of 0.1-0.2 μg/ml to be effective against both fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and ticks (Dermacentor variabilis). Pharmacokinetic profiles in dogs following a 2.5mg/kg oral dosage demonstrated uniform and predictable afoxolaner plasma concentrations above threshold levels required for efficacy for

Factors influencing heartworm, flea, and tick preventative use in patients presenting to a veterinary teaching hospital.

The introduction of modern heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives has provided a safe and effective means of controlling companion animal endoparasites, but achieving good owner compliance remains an ongoing challenge for the veterinary profession. Based on a sample of patients from the veterinary teaching hospital at the University of Pennsylvania, this study retrospectively examined factors associated with preventative use and areas of potential weakness in client communication. Between 1999 and 2006, records of 5276 canine and 1226 feline patients were searched for signalment, survey resul

Survey of tick species and tick-borne pathogens in pet dogs and cats in mainland China.

Ticks are major vectors of zoonotic diseases, harboring and transmitting various bacteria, viruses and parasites. In mainland China, the rapidly growing population of companion animals has rendered pets important tick hosts and a critical bridge for tick-borne pathogens to infiltrate domestic environments, yet no systematic investigations have been conducted on tick species parasitizing pets and the pathogens they carry. This study was conducted from May 2024 to August 2025. We collected ticks from the body surfaces of outpatient dogs and cats at 231 pet hospitals across 27 Chinese provinces an

Molecular characterization of livestock-associated ticks and tick-borne bacteria in Xinjiang, northwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region represents a critical pastoral zone at the livestock-tick-human interface in northwestern China, yet molecular data on tick-borne pathogens in this region remain scarce. METHODS: Between 2017 and 2018, 6172 ticks were collected from cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and dogs across 18 counties in Xinjiang. Tick species identification was performed through morphological examination and cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene barcoding. Pooled samples (n = 55) were screened using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing targeting Rickettsia (glutamate tran

Invasive cattle ticks in East Africa: morphological and molecular confirmation of the presence of Rhipicephalus microplus in south-eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus microplus, an invasive tick species of Asian origin and the main vector of Babesia species, is considered one of the most widespread ectoparasites of livestock. The tick has spread from its native habitats on translocated livestock to large parts of the tropical world, where it has replaced some of the local populations of Rhipicephalus decoloratus ticks. Although the tick was reported in Uganda 70 years ago, it has not been found in any subsequent surveys. This study was carried out to update the national tick species distribution on livestock in Uganda as a basis fo

Crowdsourcing-based nationwide tick collection reveals the distribution of Ixodes ricinus and I. persulcatus and associated pathogens in Finland.

A national crowdsourcing-based tick collection campaign was organized in 2015 with the objective of producing novel data on tick distribution and tick-borne pathogens in Finland. Nearly 20 000 Ixodes ticks were collected. The collected material revealed the nationwide distribution of I. persulcatus for the first time and a shift northwards in the distribution of I. ricinus in Finland. A subset of 2038 tick samples containing both species was screened for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the prevalence was 14.2% for I. ricinus and 19.8% for I. persulcatus), B. miyamotoi (0.2% and 0.4%, respecti

Short report: duration of tick attachment required for transmission of powassan virus by deer ticks.

Infected deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) were allowed to attach to naive mice for variable lengths of time to determine the duration of tick attachment required for Powassan (POW) virus transmission to occur. Viral load in engorged larvae detaching from viremic mice and in resulting nymphs was also monitored. Ninety percent of larval ticks acquired POW virus from mice that had been intraperitoneally inoculated with 10(5) plaque-forming units (PFU). Engorged larvae contained approximately 10 PFU. Transstadial transmission efficiency was 22%, resulting in approximately 20% infection in nymphs tha

Displaced tick-parasite interactions at the host interface.

Reciprocal interactions of parasites transmitted by blood-sucking arthropod vectors have been studied primarily at the parasite-host and parasite-vector interface. The third component of this parasite triangle, the vector-host interface, has been largely ignored. Now there is growing realization that reciprocal interactions between arthropod vectors and their vertebrate hosts play a pivotal role in the survival of arthropod-borne viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. The vector-host interface is the site where the haematophagous arthropods feeds. To obtain a blood meal, the vector must overcome the

Draft genome sequence data of Haemaphysalis longicornis Oita strain.

Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann, 1901 is one of the most well-known hard ticks because of its medical and veterinary importance. Haemaphysalis longicornis transmit a wide range of pathogens among vertebrates, affecting humans and animals in Asia and Oceania. In Japan, the tick species is a major pest of cattle because it can spread a protozoan parasite Theileria orientalis, which causes theileriosis and produces economic losses to the livestock industry (Yokoyama et al. 2012 [1]). Apart from bovine theileriosis, H. longicornis is a vector of bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia ovata, canine

An exploratory analysis of demography and movement patterns of dogs: New insights in the ecology of endemic Rocky Mountain-Spotted Fever in Mexicali, Mexico.

An outbreak of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) transmitted by the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) has emerged as a major human and animal health concern in Mexicali, Mexico. Due to high rates of brown dog tick infestation, susceptibility, and association with humans, dogs serve as sentinels and have a key role in the ecology of RMSF. A cross-sectional household questionnaire study was conducted in six rural and urban locations to characterize dog ecology and demography in RMSF high-and low-risk areas of Mexicali. In addition, we tracked movement patterns of 16 dogs usi

Development of a prophylactic regime using long-acting tetracycline for the control of redwater and heartwater in susceptible cattle moved into an endemic area.

Thirty young crossbred steers were purchased from a tick-borne disease-free farm in South Africa, shown to be serologically negative to Babesia bigemina/bovis and Cowdria ruminantium, and moved to an experimental farm where babesiosis and heartwater were known to be endemic. The animals were allowed to graze as a herd on tick-infested areas of the farm for 90 days from the beginning of April but were separated into three groups of 10 for treatment. One group received a prophylactic regime of two injections of 20 mg/kg of a long-acting oxytetracycline on days 7 and 14 after introduction, one re

Tick-borne bacterial pathogens in wildlife and their parasitizing ticks in Korea: A molecular epidemiological study.

Ticks are important vectors of numerous zoonotic pathogens, yet integrated molecular surveillance of wildlife hosts and their parasitizing ticks remains limited in Korea. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of major tick-borne bacterial pathogens in wildlife and their associated ticks. Blood samples were collected from Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis), raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), and wild boars (Sus scrofa), and a total of 246 ticks were obtained from these 34 animals. Molecular analyses identified multiple bacterial pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum,

Pathogens, endosymbionts, and blood-meal sources of host-seeking ticks in the fast-changing Maasai Mara wildlife ecosystem.

The role of questing ticks in the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR), an ecosystem with intensified human-wildlife-livestock interactions, remains poorly understood. We surveyed the diversity of questing ticks, their blood-meal hosts, and tick-borne pathogens to understand potential effects on human and livestock health. By flagging and hand-picking from vegetation in 25 localities, we collected 1,465 host-seeking ticks, mostly Rhipicephalus and Amblyomma species identified by morphology and molecular analysis. We used PCR with high-resolution me

Endosymbionts carried by ticks feeding on dogs in Spain.

Studies on tick microbial communities historically focused on tick-borne pathogens. However, there is an increasing interest in capturing relationships among non-pathogenic endosymbionts and exploring their relevance for tick biology. The present study included a total of 1600 adult ticks collected from domestic dogs in 4 different biogeographical regions of Spain. Each pool formed by 1 to 10 halves of individuals representing one specific ticks species was examined by PCR for the presence of Coxiellaceae, Rickettsia spp., Rickettsiales, Wolbachia spp., and other bacterial DNA. Of the pools an

Isolation of deer tick virus (Powassan virus, lineage II) from Ixodes scapularis and detection of antibody in vertebrate hosts sampled in the Hudson Valley, New York State.

BACKGROUND: Deer tick virus, DTV, is a genetically and ecologically distinct lineage of Powassan virus (POWV) also known as lineage II POWV. Human incidence of POW encephalitis has increased in the last 15 years potentially due to the emergence of DTV, particularly in the Hudson Valley of New York State. We initiated an extensive sampling campaign to determine whether POWV was extant throughout the Hudson Valley in tick vectors and/or vertebrate hosts. METHODS: More than 13,000 ticks were collected from hosts or vegetation and tested for the presence of DTV using molecular and virus isolation
