Prevalence of abnormalities in dental structure, position, and eruption pattern in a population of unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the dental characteristics of patients subjected to a protocol that included early secondary gingivoalveoloplasty (ESGAP). DESIGN: Panoramic radiographs of 87 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and 29 with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) were evaluated. Missing and supernumerary teeth were also quantified on the cleft and noncleft side and in the maxilla and mandible. Crown and root malformations and tooth rotations were quantified. A subsample in permanent dentition was extrapolated to analyze canine eruption patterns. RESULTS: A total of 48.8%

[Preservation of alveolar bone of un-restorable traumatized maxillary incisors for future].

UNLABELLED: Anterior maxillary implantation is a challenging treatment for both the surgeon and prosthodontist due to high esthetic demands in this area. However, it is the most traumatized and most exposed region to habits. Prompt and appropriate management can significantly improve prognosis of many dentoalveolar injuries, especially in young patients. Unfortunately, many traumatized teeth are overtreated or left untreated, which lead to a much more complicated treatment at the time of permanent restoration at adulthood. The facial cortical plate over the roots of the maxillary teeth is thin

A histological study of the effect of growth hormone on odontogenesis in the Lewis dwarf rat.

The effect of growth hormone (GH) on the dentition has been described in children with pituitary dwarfism where teeth fail to form; those that do form tend to be reduced in size and the eruption potential is diminished. The aim here was to examine the effect of GH on odontogenesis via molar development in Lewis (control), dwarf (Dw) and Dw GH-treated (Dw+GH) rats aged 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days. Dw+GH animals received a twice-daily dose (65 microg/kg) of GH which commenced at 2 days of age. Animals were killed, mandibles removed, processed to embedding in paraffin, sectioned and stained for histo

Microstructural Analysis of Carious Lesion Progression Beneath Hall Technique and Conventional Stainless-Steel Crowns in Children.

BACKGROUND: Stainless-steel crowns (SSC) are a common restorative option for preserving tooth tissue damaged by caries in primary molars. The Hall Technique (HT) is an SSC restorative approach using no local anaesthesia, tooth preparation or caries removal. AIM: To compare carious lesion progression, biomechanical and chemical properties in exfoliated primary molars treated with HT and conventional SSC. DESIGN: A descriptive laboratory study was conducted with teeth treated with HT SSC and conventional SSC (control). RESULTS: Radiographic lesion progression was observed in half of the sampl

Endodontic Reapproach in a Tooth With External Resorption: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontists face various challenges, and some factors are associated with endodontic treatment failure, such as the presence of resistant microorganisms resulting from inefficient disinfection and nonadhesive coronary sealing. The quality of the execution of the operative protocols, cautious irrigation, and the presence of a hermetic seal from the crown to the apex lead to successful endodontic retreatment. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study approached a female patient, aged 30 years. The data obtained from the literature were collected from PubMed, SciELO, and Goo

Low-frequency hearing preceded the evolution of giant body size and filter feeding in baleen whales.

Living baleen whales (mysticetes) produce and hear the lowest-frequency (infrasonic) sounds among mammals. There is currently debate over whether the ancestor of crown cetaceans (Neoceti) was able to detect low frequencies. However, the lack of information on the most archaic fossil mysticetes has prevented us from determining the earliest evolution of their extreme acoustic biology. Here, we report the first anatomical analyses and frequency range estimation of the inner ear in Oligocene (34-23 Ma) fossils of archaic toothed mysticetes from Australia and the USA. The cochlear anatomy of these

Eruption chronology of the first deciduous teeth in children born prematurely with birth weight less than 1500 g.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the eruption chronology of the first deciduous teeth in premature infants with birth weight less than 1500 g and to compare it according to gender and nutritional status at birth. METHODS: Longitudinal study including 40 low birth weight premature infants of both genders. The tooth was considered erupted when the crown went through the gum and became part of the oral environment. The comparison of the eruption chronology in relation to gender and among children appropriate or small for gestational age was done by Student's t-test, being significant p<0.05. RESULTS: The

Large buccal bifurcation cyst in a child: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: WHO defines the mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst as a cyst occurring near the cervical margin of the lateral aspect of a root as a consequence of inflammatory process in a periodontal pocket. The pathogenesis of these cysts is still debated, but they are most likely originated from reduced enamel epithelium or from inflammatory proliferation of epithelial cell rests of Malassez that come from the superficial mucosa of a tooth in eruption. The aim of this article was to describe a case of large buccal bifurcation cyst of a permanent mandibular first molar. CASE REPORT: A 6-year-o

Immediate, single stage, truly anatomic zirconia implant in lower molar replacement: a case report with 2.5 years follow-up.

This report demonstrates the clinical use of a modified, truly anatomic, root-analogue zirconia implant for immediate replacement of a two-rooted, left first mandibular molar. A 50-year-old female patient with chronic apical periodontitis of the left mandibulary first molar was referred and the tooth was extracted. The mesial root had to be removed surgically due to a root fracture. A truly anatomical, root identical, roughened zirconia implant modified by macro-retentions was manufactured and placed into the extraction socket by tapping 7 days later. After 4 months a composite crown was cemen

Long-term follow-up of severely resorbed maxillary incisors after resolution of an etiologically associated impacted canine.

BACKGROUND: Resorption of maxillary incisor roots because of an impacted canine is a well-recognized phenomenon that occurs in a surprisingly high proportion of patients with impacted canines. In this retrospective study, we studied a sample of patients in whom the resorption was particularly severe. METHODS: The sample consisted of 11 patients (age, 11.8 +/- 1.2 years) with 20 severely resorbed maxillary incisors. The amount of resorption was measured at the outset (T1), when the impacted canine was distanced from the incisor root area (T2), at the completion of the orthodontic treatment (T3

Three patient reports illustrating the use of dentin adhesives to cement crowns to severely worn teeth.

PURPOSE: Severely worn and broken down teeth present clinical treatment planning dilemmas. Extreme examples of worn teeth present in patients suffering from bulimia nervosa and dentinogenesis imperfecta. Bulimia nervosa typically presents early in adult life with a myriad of clinical features and a most important dental sign of eroded palatal surfaces on the maxillary teeth. Dentinogenesis imperfecta is a relatively uncommon disorder that presents with varying severity of unsupported enamel and results in teeth more susceptible to wear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental treatment for both conditi

Tooth eruption symmetry in functional lateralities.

Dental casts and oral photographs from a cross-sectional sample of 2092 young North Americans with detailed information on functional lateralities (eyedness, handedness and footedness) were examined to compare the proportions of symmetrical and asymmetrical eruption of the antimeric (left-right, contralateral pair) permanent teeth using a four-grade eruption scale. The proportion of symmetrically erupting antimeric teeth was higher for some teeth in those with non-right-sidedness of the feet and eyes, but not significantly so in the case of handedness. Left-footedness was significantly (95% co

Congenital Eruption Cyst: A Case Report Listing Histopathological Features With Literature Review and Differential Diagnoses.

Congenital eruption cysts manifest in neonates when the dental follicle separates from the crown of an erupting tooth coronal to the alveolar ridge. Clinical diagnosis can be challenging as it can present clinically similar to congenital epulis and other benign newborn pathologies. They can occasionally cause difficulty with feeding and latching, which can inhibit the newborn's early development. Here we present a 26-hour-old twin male infant who was evaluated for a dome-shaped nodule on the mandibular alveolar ridge. Surgical excision was performed due to difficulty in latching and feeding, a

Root Canal Treatment of a Geminated Maxillary Second Molar with C-shaped Canal System: A Case Report.

Gemination is a rare phenomenon in the maxillary posterior teeth. Endodontic treatment of these teeth requires special care due to the bizarre anatomy particularly when it is accompanied by a C-shaped canal system. This report illustrates a patient with a rare geminated C-shaped maxillary second molar comprised of two sections in its crown, including a geminated section attached to a normal coronal of a second maxillary molar diagnosed with the pulpal status "necrosis" and "irreversible pulpitis" in geminated section and the molar respectively. Thus, endodontic treatment was performed on both

A case of impacted central incisor due to dentigerous cyst associated with impacted compound odontome.

Odontomes are hamartomatous growths of odontogenic origin. Odontomes usually do not erupt into oral cavity and can cause several difficulties like swelling, displacement of teeth and adjacent structures, cystic changes and carcinomatous transformation. Odontomes are treated by surgical removal. Dentigerous cysts arise due to accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and crown of unerupted tooth. Dentigerous cysts cause several difficulties such as swelling, non-eruption of involved teeth and displacement of adjacent teeth, thus requiring early detection and prompt treatment. Trea
