Dietary signals in the premolar dentition of primates.

Dietary adaptations specific to the premolar row remain largely undocumented across primates. This study examines how relative premolar size varies among broad dietary groups (i.e., folivores, frugivores, insectivores, hard-object feeders) using a phylogenetically and ecologically diverse sample of species. We quantified relative premolar size with shape ratios computed using mandibular length, body mass, palate area, and M1 area to evaluate hypotheses that link variation in relative premolar size to differences in tooth loading, energy requirements, the probability of tooth-food-tooth contact

The risk of healing complications in primary teeth with intrusive luxation: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Intrusive luxation is a frequent injury in the primary dentition. Complications such as ankylosis or pulp necrosis (PN) and infection with periapical inflammation may affect the developing permanent tooth if not diagnosed and treated in time. The aim of this study was to report the risk of PN, pulp canal obliteration (PCO), infection-related resorption (IRR), ankylosis-related resorption (ARR) and premature tooth loss (PTL) in primary teeth following intrusive luxation, and to identify possible risk factors for PN and PTL. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A retrospective analysis of a c

Osteoporosis: a review and its dental implications.

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects primarily women, but can also occur in men. It is characterized by a loss of bone mineral density (BMD), and often culminates in a fracture of the hip, wrist, and/or vertebrae. The diagnosis of osteoporosis is often made by using bone density measurements. They are often expressed in relative terms (T-scores and Z-scores); the Z-score is the number of standard deviations from the age-matched average value of healthy women. A low Z-score indicates the bone density is lower than it should be for a patient's age and sex. Osteoporosis is defined as a BMD loss

3D-finite element analysis and weibull analysis of maxillary first molar restored with endocrowns with different pulpal extensions compared with conventional crowns with post-and-core.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation of endodontically treated teeth with large coronal destruction is still a clinical challenge. No established guidelines specify where a conventional crown with fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post-and-resin core or an endocrown (EC) is indicated and which material or pulpal extension should be used. OBJECTIVE: To provide evidence for restoring severely damaged maxillary first molar (MFM) by comparing the fracture and debonding resistance after being restored with the ceramic EC and the conventional zirconia crown and FRC post-and-resin core. METHOD: Models of a MF

Influence of Dentine Thickness and Intraradicular Reinforcement on Fracture Resistance of MTA-apexified Immature Anterior Teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The most common cause of failure of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-apexified teeth is root fracture. This study aimed to identify the appropriate reinforcement materials following MTA apexification in immature teeth under simulated oral conditions. METHODS: Part 1: To investigate the effect of dentine thickness: twenty-four teeth (n = 8) were assigned to 3 groups; intact, simulated immature teeth with 2.0 mm, and 1.5 mm dentin thicknesses. Roots were prepared using Peeso reamers until the predetermined thickness was achieved. Part 2: To evaluate the effect of reinforcement mat

Numb chin syndrome associated with vertical root fracture and odontogenic infection.

Numb chin syndrome (NCS) is a multifactorial neuropathic disorder associated with paresthesia to the chin, lip, and oral mucosa, particularly arising as a sequela to various dental-related procedures or infections in the mandible. Timely elucidation of the underlying etiology is of paramount importance as the presentation of NCS could serve as a harbinger of malignancy or metastatic disease. This report describes an unusual case of NCS developing synchronously with a vertical root fracture and odontogenic infection in a mandibular first molar. Clinicians should consider the inclusion of a vert

Extraction site preservation using an in-situ hardening alloplastic bone graft substitute.

This case report highlights the use of an in-situ hardening alloplastic bone grafting material composed of beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) granules coated with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to preserve the dimensions and architecture of the alveolar ridge after atraumatic extraction. This material provided a stable scaffold that, although left uncovered, deterred the ingrowth of unwanted soft tissue, allowing newly formed keratinized soft tissue to proliferate over the healing grafted socket and gradually cover the site. At re-entry after 4 months adequate newly formed bone was observ

Mineral trioxide aggregate pulpotomies: a case series outcomes assessment.

BACKGROUND: The greatest threats to developing teeth are dental caries and traumatic injury. A primary goal of all restorative treatment is to maintain pulp vitality so that normal root development or apexogenesis can occur. If pulpal exposure occurs, then a pulpotomy procedure aims to preserve pulp vitality to allow for normal root development. Historically, calcium hydroxide has been the material of choice for pulpotomy procedures. Recently, an alternative material called mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has demonstrated the ability to induce hard-tissue formation in pulpal tissue. The autho

Recent findings in classification of osteogenesis imperfecta by means of existing dental symptoms.

The findings are based on a clinical investigation conducted on forty-nine patients suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), as well as on a questionnaire study in which 117 osteogenesis imperfecta-affected persons or their parents were involved. The survey established pathological tooth discolorations as well as tooth abrasions. Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) was more frequently found in primary teeth than in permanent teeth. There were no gender-specific differences. Radiological abnormalities were found in both, abraded and/or discolored teeth, as well as in clinically normal appearing
