Does artificial aging correctly predict the long-term in-vivo degradation behavior in zirconia hip prostheses?

BACKGROUND: Accelerated hydrothermal aging has long been one of the most widely accepted quality control tests for simulating low-temperature degradation (LTD) in zirconia-containing implants used in total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, it is still unclear how much consistency there is between the experimental prediction from the internationally-standardized tests and the actual measurements from surgically-removed implants after a long period of implantation. This question is fundamentally related to a lack of understanding of mechanical/tribological contribution to the in-vivo LTD kinetics

Preclinical 89Zr Immuno-PET of High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer and Lymph Node Metastasis.

UNLABELLED: The elevation of cancer antigen 125 (CA125) levels in the serum of asymptomatic patients precedes the radiologic detection of high-grade serous ovarian cancer by at least 2 mo and the final clinical diagnosis by 5 mo. PET imaging of CA125 expression by ovarian cancer cells may enhance the evaluation of the extent of disease and provide a roadmap to surgery as well as detect recurrence and metastases. METHODS: (89)Zr-labeled mAb-B43.13 was synthesized to target CA125 and evaluated via PET imaging and biodistribution studies in mice bearing OVCAR3 human ovarian adenocarcinoma xenogr

Selective enrichment of phosphatidylcholines from food and biological matrices using metal oxides as solid-phase extraction materials prior to analysis by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS.

A zirconia (ZrO(2))-modified solid-phase extraction sorbent has been evaluated for selective extraction of phosphatidylcholines from biological samples, followed by analysis of the isolated solutes by reversed-phase liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. The clean-up process was optimized using seven standard phosphatidylcholines including two lyso derivatives. Different acidic conditions were tested for the bonding and washing steps; for elution, various aqueous or methanolic bases were studied. Experiments were conducted hydrodynamically using extraction cart

Pits and fissures: relative space contribution in fissures from sealants, prophylaxis pastes and organic remnants.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies by the authors have looked at the nature of the fissure system of human permanent molars and premolars, and has provided evidence for the presence of a prismless layer of enamel. It was noted during these studies that the fissure spaces were often occupied by material other than the fissure sealant. The aim of this study was to define these materials and to look at the percentage contribution of each to the sealed fissure space. METHODS: A sample of teeth, both molars and premolars, were sealed with an unfilled fissure sealant after prophylaxis with a coloured pro

Thermo-mechanical loading of innovative "Mini-skirt" preparation design versus conventional full-coverage maxillary central incisor preparation design: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Conventional full-coverage anterior crown preparations for zirconia often require substantial enamel and dentine reduction and may concentrate palatal-cervical stresses, risking marginal discrepancy and compromised seal. A conservative "Mini-skirt" (MS) design that positions the palatal finish line coronally (above the cingulum) could preserve tooth structure and enhance adhesive support, but its thermo-mechanical performance under thermal cycling and fatigue loading remains unclear. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether a conservative MS anterior preparation, with a palatal finish line ab
