Cystoid macula edema occurred in both eyes of two patients three years after routine intracapsular cataract extraction. Vitreous adhesion to the cataract wound was noted in all four eyes within eight weeks of surgery. The relatively young age and good health of both patients may explain why their perifoveal capillaries remained competent so long after surgery.

Posterior capsule opacification following extracapsular cataract extraction is a manifestation of proliferation of anterior lens epithelium onto the posterior capsule. In addition to Elschnig pearl formation, vision is decreased in two ways. Multiple layers of proliferated epithelium produce a frank opacity. For the past 5 3/4 years intraocular lens implantion belongs to the routine operations performed in the Lucerne Eye Clinic. Whereas unilateral cataracts are the main and frequent indication for intraocular lens implants, there are certain cases of uni- and bilateral cataracts also, where the implantation of intraocular lens, due to its advantages, is specially indicated. Such cases are presented briefly in this paper. Good results are achieved through strictly observing the methods of treatment before and after the implantation of the lens.

Contact lens wear may be indicated for cosmetic, professional, optical or therapeutic reasons. For each of these indications the arguments are given, why and when contact lenses are better than spectacle correction and which possibilities there are. Contact lens wear is contraindicated in certain eye diseases and in the case of problems of handling and hygiene. The author's preferences concerning the different contact lens materials are summarized briefly.

Gore-Tex sutures are commonly used for scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (SFIOL) due to their high tensile strength and lower risk of breakage. Reverse pupillary block (RPB) is a posterior bowing of the iris, which is most likely caused by a flap-valve-like mechanism between the lens and the iris. Giant retinal tears (GRTs) are full-thickness circumferential tears of more than 90 degrees of the retina that are associated with vitreous detachment.
