Exploring the symptoms and psychological experiences among lung cancer convalescence patients after radical lobectomy: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the symptom experiences and psychological feelings of lung cancer patients after radical lobectomy in China. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using face-to-face semistructured interviews with lung cancer patients who had a radical lobectomy for treatment of their cancer during the convalescence period. Participants (n = 18) were recruited from a general hospital in China, and patients were selected using purposive sampling from September 2021 to February 2022. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim, and Colaizzi's seven-step method of

Primary Hepatic Melanoma: A Diagnostic Surprise.

Melanoma is a relatively rare malignancy with a highly aggressive biological behavior. Metastases to other sites, like lymph nodes and liver are common, but primary hepatic melanoma is a rarity with poor survival ranging from months to few years. Diagnosis of primary hepatic melanoma via clinical features and imaging technology is difficult because of its ambiguous features. Here, we present a 26-year-old North Indian woman admitted in the department of gastrointestinal surgery at our tertiary care hospital with the complaint of pain in the abdomen for a month associated with the loss of appet

Giant Urinary Bladder in a Woman with Down Syndrome: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Non-neurogenic neurogenic bladder involves fluctuating flow rates due to involuntary muscle contractions during voiding in those with normal neurological function. The diagnostic challenge lies in distinguishing between massive urinary bladder distension and ovarian tumors. While various pathologies mimicking ovarian tumors are documented, cases of a massively distended urinary bladder, known as giant urinary bladder, posing as such are notably scarce. CASE REPORT This case report presents the unique clinical scenario of a 31-year-old woman with Down syndrome who was initially misdi

Clinical case analysis of 32 children aged 0-6 years with lead poisoning in Nanning, China.

Lead is one of the heavy metals that is toxic and widely distributed in the environment, and children are more sensitive to the toxic effects of lead because the blood-brain barrier and immune system are not yet well developed. The objective of the study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of lead poisoning in children aged 0∼6 years in a hospital in Guangxi, and to provide scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of lead poisoning. We collected and analyzed the clinical data of 32 children with lead poisoning admitted to a hospital in Guangxi from 2010 to 2018. The result

Spexin2 Is a Novel Food Regulator in Gallus gallus.

Spexin2 (SPX2), a paralog of SPX1, is a newly identified gene in non-mammalian vertebrates. Limited studies in fish have evidenced its important role in food intake and energy balance modulation. However, little is known about its biological functions in birds. Using the chicken (c-) as a model, we cloned the full-length cDNA of SPX2 by using RACE-PCR. It is 1189 base pair (bp) in length and predicted to generate a protein of 75 amino acids that contains a 14 amino acids mature peptide. Tissue distribution analysis showed that cSPX2 transcripts were detected in a wide array of tissues, with ab

Prader-Willi Syndrome: Possibilities of Weight Gain Prevention and Treatment.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder which involves the endocrine and neurologic systems, metabolism, and behavior. The aim of this paper is to summarize current knowledge on dietary management and treatment of PWS and, in particular, to prevent excessive weight gain. Growth hormone (GH) therapy is the recommended standard treatment for PWS children, because it improves body composition (by changing the proportion of body fat and lean body mass specifically by increasing muscle mass and energy expenditure), linear growth, and in infants, it promotes psychomotor and IQ deve

Critical changes in hypothalamic gene networks in response to pancreatic cancer as found by single-cell RNA sequencing.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer cachexia is a devastating chronic condition characterized by involuntary weight loss, muscle wasting, abnormal fat metabolism, anorexia, and fatigue. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this syndrome remain poorly understood. In particular, the hypothalamus may play a central role in cachexia, given that it has direct access to peripheral signals because of its anatomical location and attenuated blood-brain barrier. Furthermore, this region has a critical role in regulating appetite and metabolism. METHODS: To provide a detailed analysis of the hypothalamic response

Fluoxetine-induced urinary retention in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat presented for a history of several weeks of infrequent urination and hyporexia progressing to anorexia. The cat had been normal prior to being placed on fluoxetine to treat inter-cat aggression, after which it began to display weight loss, hyporexia and abnormal urination habits. The cat had been seen by various veterinary hospitals previously and treated for suspected feline lower urinary tract disease. When the patient still had urinary retention despite perineal urethrostomy surgery, it was presented for ongoing care. Contrast

LGR4 is essential for R-spondin1-mediated suppression of food intake via pro-opiomelanocortin.

Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein coupled receptor 4 (LGR4) suppresses food intake after its activation by binding of its ligands, R-spondins. We investigated the mechanism of food intake suppression by R-spondin1 in a region-specific Lgr4 gene knockout (LGR4 cKO) mouse model, generated by deletion of the Lgr4 gene in arcuate nucleus (ARC) using Lgr4fx/fx mice combined with infection of an AAV-Cre vector. After R-spondin1 administration, LGR4 cKO mice didn't exhibit a suppressed appetite, compared to that in control mice, which received a vehicle. In ARC of LGR4 cKO mice, Pomc mRNA expr

Behavioral and neurochemical studies in distinct animal models of ethanol's motivational effects.

In the last decades, the goal of creating a unique and complete model of alcohol use and alcoholism has been replaced by a myriad of different animal models, each addressing a specific feature of problematic alcohol consumption. This mini-review highlights selected findings in the field of alcohol abuse and dependence, as found through the use of animal models. There are models (e.g., drinking in the dark, drinking after alcohol adulteration or alcohol deprivation) in which animals self-administer alcohol, that are useful to analyze determinants and consequences of binge drinking, progression

Pharmacotherapy of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: nonstimulant medication approaches.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common chronic health conditions and mental disorders affecting school-aged children. Prevalence with a conservative estimate is reported to be 3-5% of this population. Boys are approximately three-times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. The diagnosis refers to a family of related chronic neurobiological disorders that interfere with an individual's capacity to regulate activity level, inhibit behavior and attend to tasks in developmentally appropriate ways. Signs and symptoms of ADHD are typically present during the pres

The amygdala: site of genomic and nongenomic arousal of aldosterone-induced sodium intake.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND.: Mineralocorticoids act on the brain to influence sodium intake, and they do so via intracellular type I receptors and possibly also via a direct membrane action, as they do in the kidney. One brain area implicated by lesion studies investigating the regulation of sodium appetite aroused by adrenal steroids is the amygdala. METHODS: To examine the mechanism by which mineralocorticoids act in the amygdala to arouse salt intake via a genomic and or membrane mode of action, rats were bilaterally fitted with cannulae directed to terminate in the amygdala. The genomic actio

The study of genetic polymorphisms related to serotonin in Alzheimer's disease: a new perspective in a heterogenic disorder.

Genetic and environmental factors have been implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia in the elderly. Mutations in 3 genes mapped on chromosomes 21, 14 and 1 are related to the rare early onset forms of AD while the epsilon 4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene (on chromosome 19) is the major susceptibility locus for the most common late onset AD (LOAD). Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is a key neurotransmitter implicated in the control of mood, sleep, appetite and a variety of traits and behaviors. Recently, a polymorphism in th
