An experiment to validate predictions concerning submersible survivability was performed in December, 1975, by members of the Canadian Forces in the CF Submersible Lockout Vehicle SDL-1 in Halifax Harbour in water of 4 degrees C temperature at a depth of 40 ft. Data was collected relevant to the life support equipment to determine if it would operate for a simulated 6-h mission followed by a 24-h immobility period, at the end of which rescue was presumed to have occurred. Circulating levels of lactate dehydrogenase, glutamate-oxaloacetate, glutamate-pyruvate transaminase, and creatine phosphokinase, as well as its isoenzymes, were measured to investigate the possibility of myocardial damage during acceleration to high +Gz. Serum samples were analyzed in 12 human volunteers before, 6 h after, and 24 h after several bouts of accleration to 6, 8, 9, and 10 G. No substantial elevations of enzyme activities were observed. The purpose of these summary remarks is to put into proper focus the magnificent achievement created by the Skylab Medical Team in concert with their engineering colleagues and most importantly, the astronauts who had to serve as both investigators and subjects. Indeed, by their ingenuity and capability of handling the numerous problems encountered due to engineering deficiencies, they have shown man to be indispensable in long-duration space flight.

Hemodynamics were studied in seven conscious dogs during acute hypobaric stress at 14,000 ft simulated altitude. Silastic catheters were chronically implanted in the pulmonary artery, left atrium, and aorta. The effect of 96 h of exposure to hypobaric hypoxia with and without 3.8% CO2 supplementation was studied in two groups of subjects. Five subjects (CO2) were exposed to 440-465 mm Hg barometric pressure (4000-4400 m), and 4 subjects (no-CO2) were exposed to 455-492 mm Hg (3500-1400 m) in order to produce similar levels of resting end-tidal PO2. Plasma activities of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were studied, along with hematological changes, in rats suffering from various degrees of experimental decompression sickness (DS). This study examined the hypothesis that prevention of hypocapnia and alkalosis would ameliorate the symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Five subjects were exposed to simulated high altitude for 4 d with 3.8% CO2 added to the chamber to maintain normocapnia. EEG studies were conducted on 98 naval divers to ascertain the incidence of abnormal paroxysmal activity in them and to correlate it with their performance in diving. Nine of the 98 showed EEG abnormality in the form of a buildup of high-voltage, low-frequency activity after hyperventilation. The fasting blood sugar level and glucose tolerance were investigated in seven amle lowlanders at sea level, during their stay at an altitude of 4,000 m at intervals of 2 weeks, 10, 15, 20, and 24 months and again on return to sea level during the first week and after 1 month. For comparison, the glucose tolerance of six male Ladakhis (natives of high altitude area) was also determined at altitude. The fasting blood sugar among lowlanders increased to 136.0 plus or minus 4.39 mg per 100 ml during 10 months of stay at altitude followed with a gradual decrease to a value of 76.4 plus or minus 3.

Maintaining intact cognitive performance is a high priority for space exploration. This review seeks to summarize the cumulative results of existing studies of cognitive performance in spaceflight and analogue environments. We focused on long-duration (>21 d) studies for which no review has previously been conducted. There were 11 published studies identified for long-duration spaceflight (N = 42 subjects) as well as 21 shorter spaceflight studies (N = 70 subjects). Overall, spaceflight cognitive studies ranged from 6-438 d in duration. Some 55 spaceflight analogue studies were also identified
