Evolution shapes ecosystem resilience through spatial self-organization.

Drylands are globally widespread and ecologically important but vulnerable to climate change. Many exhibit spatially self-organized vegetation patterns that enhance resilience by enabling vegetation to reorganize their patterns under drying, thereby optimizing water use and maintaining productivity. Plants can also undergo evolution in response to environmental change. Although both spatial self-organization and rapid evolution are fundamental mechanisms of resilience, their interaction remains largely unknown. Using a theoretical model, we examine how these mechanisms interact to shape vegeta

Microplastics in tropical Malaysian rivers: a review on spatial abundance, analytical methods, and ecological risk assessment.

Riverine systems in Southeast Asia are vital pathways for microplastic (MP) flux, but a unified understanding of their spatial patterns, land-use influences, and transport dynamics remains limited. As a primary contributor to global riverine plastic emissions, Malaysia serves as a critical model for understanding microplastic dynamics in tropical monsoonal climates. Microplastics are emerging contaminants that can be harmful to tropical ecosystems. This systematic review synthesizes existing data on MP abundance, morphology, and transport within Malaysian river basins, providing a comprehensiv

Environmental, Climatic, and Parasite Molecular Factors Impacting the Incidence of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Due to Leishmania tropica in Three Moroccan Foci.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) occurring due to Leishmania tropica is a public health problem in Morocco. The distribution and incidence of this form of leishmaniasis have increased in an unusual way in the last decade, and the control measures put in place are struggling to slow down the epidemic. This study was designed to assess the impact of climatic and environmental factors on CL in L. tropica foci. The data collected included CL incidence and climatic and environmental factors across three Moroccan foci (Foum Jemaa, Imintanout, and Ouazzane) from 2000 to 2019. Statistical analyses were pe

Seasonal models of herpangina and hand-foot-mouth disease to simulate annual fluctuations in urban warming in Tokyo.

In order to investigate the effects of global warming, we attempted to establish seasonal models to predict fluctuations in rates of herpangina (HA) and hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) associated with weather conditions and calendar months in Tokyo, Japan. Surveillance data tracking HA/HFMD incidences in Tokyo was retrieved from the Infectious Agents Surveillance Report, published by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan. From the Meteorological Agency, we obtained data for 54 weather condition parameters. The annual fluctuations in reported HA cases comprising start, peak, and

Comprehensive analysis of greenhouse gases emissions and microbial dynamics in glacier-fed lakes across various ablation stages.

Glacier melting, a direct consequence of global climate change, significantly influences lake ecosystem structures and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission in the glacier-fed lake. As glaciers release substantial meltwater containing nitrogen and carbon into lakes, microbial communities and their GHGs emissions could also evolve accordingly. So far, studies on seasonal and diel GHGs emission characteristics and their driving mechanism at high-altitude (> 5000 m) glacier-fed lakes remains relatively constrained. This study has focused on the Lhasa Valley Glacier, a typical continental-type glacier

Association between season and pregnancy outcomes in fresh embryo transfer cycles: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infertility represents a major global public health challenge. Identifying modifiable factors to optimize the outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART) is therefore crucial. Seasonal exposure has been reported to be correlated with natural conception rates, birth patterns, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the potential associations between seasonal exposure and pregnancy outcomes among women undergoing fresh embryo transfer cycles remain controversial. This study aims to determine whether an association exists between seasonal exposure and pregnancy outcomes follow

Hurricane Irma Linked to Coral Skeletal Density Shifts on the Florida Keys Reef Tract.

Coral reefs are at risk due to various global and local anthropogenic stressors that impact the health of reef ecosystems worldwide. The most recent climate models predict that climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of tropical storms. This increased storm occurrence and strength will likely compromise coral reef structures and habitats for reef-dwelling organisms, including across the Florida Keys Reef Tract (FKRT), the most extensive tropical reef system along the US coast. While several recent studies reveal the chronic impacts of tropical storms on corals, relatively litt…

Long-term impact of changing childhood malnutrition on rotavirus diarrhoea: Two decades of adjusted association with climate and socio-demographic factors from urban Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: There is strong association between childhood rotavirus, diarrhoea, climate factors and malnutrition. Conversely, a significant nutritional transition (reduced under-nutrition) with a concurrent increasing trend of rotavirus infection in last decade was also observed among under 5 children, especially in developing countries including Bangladesh. Considering the pathophysiology of rotavirus, there might be an interaction of this nutrition transition which plays a pivotal role in increasing rotavirus infection in addition to climate and other man-made factors in urban areas such as

EU Wide Disaggregated CAPRI Model Data: Crops, Livestock, Nitrogen In- and Outputs (Timeseries 2000-2018).

The impacts of agricultural, environmental and climate change policies in Europe are investigated using the CAPRI (Common Agricultural Policy Regionalised Impact) model. Although the model runs at a regional level, primarily NUTS2, the underlying data have been spatially disaggregated to finer scale units called 'Farm Structure Units'. In this study we present these spatially disaggregated layers of agri-environmental variables for a time series from 2000 to 2018. This harmonized and spatially consistent data set includes crop types (area, yield), livestock types (totals and densities) and var

INCREASING THE SPATIAL COVERAGE OF ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOL DEPTH MEASUREMENTS USING RANDOM FOREST AND MEAN FILTERS.

Aerosols play a critical role in atmospheric chemistry, and affect clouds, climate, and human health. However, the spatial coverage of satellite-derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) products is limited by cloud cover, orbit patterns, polar night, snow, and bright surfaces, which negatively impacts the coverage and accuracy of particulate matter modeling and health studies relying on air pollution characterization. We present a random forest model trained to capture spatial dependence of AOD and produce higher coverage through imputation. By combining the models with and without the mean filters

Machine learning-based forecasting of daily acute ischemic stroke admissions using weather data.

The climate crisis underscores the need for weather-based predictive analytics in healthcare, as weather factors contribute to ~11% of the global stroke burden. Therefore, we developed machine learning models using locoregional weather data to forecast daily acute ischemic stroke (AIS) admissions. An AIS cohort of 7914 patients admitted between 2015 and 2021 at the tertiary University Medical Center Mannheim, Germany, with a 600,000-population catchment area, was geospatially matched to German Weather Service data. Poisson regression, boosted generalized additive models, support vector machine

An advanced modeling study on the impacts and atmospheric implications of multiphase dimethyl sulfide chemistry.

Oceans dominate emissions of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), the major natural sulfur source. DMS is important for the formation of non-sea salt sulfate (nss-SO42-) aerosols and secondary particulate matter over oceans and thus, significantly influence global climate. The mechanism of DMS oxidation has accordingly been investigated in several different model studies in the past. However, these studies had restricted oxidation mechanisms that mostly underrepresented important aqueous-phase chemical processes. These neglected but highly effective processes strongly impact direct product yields of DMS ox

Time series analysis of cholera in Matlab, Bangladesh, during 1988-2001.

The study examined the impact of in-situ climatic and marine environmental variability on cholera incidence in an endemic area of Bangladesh and developed a forecasting model for understanding the magnitude of incidence. Diarrhoea surveillance data collected between 1988 and 2001 were obtained from a field research site in Matlab, Bangladesh. Cholera cases were defined as Vibrio cholerae O1 isolated from faecal specimens of patients who sought care at treatment centres serving the Matlab population. Cholera incidence for 168 months was correlated with remotely-sensed sea-surface temperature (S

Regional quality differences in Zanthoxylum bungeanum using sensor-based analysis and climate factors.

Zanthoxylum bungeanum (red pepper) is a widely used spice in the Rutaceae family, yet its quality varies markedly among production regions due to the absence of a standardized evaluation system. Here, we integrated multi-dimensional analyses (electronic nose/tongue, GC-MS, HPLC) with PCA-entropy modeling to elucidate climate-quality linkages across eight core production areas. Correlation analysis classified these areas into three distinct climate types, each strongly associated with key fruit quality indicators. Notably, primary aroma compounds (e.g., limonene, myrcene) were closely linked to

Synergistic alleviation of lake eutrophication and carbon emission by macrophyte restoration.

Algal blooms induced by eutrophication not only deteriorate water quality but also enhance greenhouse gas emissions. Although the theory of multiple stable states suggests that macrophyte restoration can reverse phytoplankton domination in lakes, associated ecosystem climate benefits are rarely considered. Based on a recent mass balance model, we highlight macrophyte restoration as a promising strategy to synergistically alleviate lake eutrophication and carbon emissions. We found a general decrease in net carbon dioxide equivalents (ΔCO2-eq) after macrophyte restoration, and then we discussed

Potential distribution modelling for Haemonchus contortus (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae) in South America.

The species Haemonchus contortus occurs in many regions worldwide, mainly parasitising small ruminants and economically impacting animal production. Climate change is considered a driving force for the risk of diseases caused by helminths and can also affect relationships between parasites and their hosts, with the potential to cause losses in both animal production and biodiversity in general. The aim of this study was to model the potential distribution of H. contortus in South America. We used MaxEnt to perform the analyses and describe the contribution of important bioclimatic variables in

Changes of hydro-meteorological trigger conditions for debris flows in a future alpine climate.

Debris-flow activity is strongly controlled by hydro-meteorological trigger conditions, which are expected to change in a future climate. In this study we connect a regional hydro-meteorological susceptibility model for debris flows with climate projections until 2100 to assess changes of the frequency of critical trigger conditions for different trigger types (long-lasting rainfall, short-duration storm, snow-melt, rain-on-snow) in six regions in the Austrian Alps. We find limited annual changes of the number of days critical for debris-flow initiation when averaged over all regions, but dist

Prediction of a Rift Valley fever outbreak.

El Niño/Southern Oscillation related climate anomalies were analyzed by using a combination of satellite measurements of elevated sea-surface temperatures and subsequent elevated rainfall and satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index data. A Rift Valley fever (RVF) risk mapping model using these climate data predicted areas where outbreaks of RVF in humans and animals were expected and occurred in the Horn of Africa from December 2006 to May 2007. The predictions were subsequently confirmed by entomological and epidemiological field investigations of virus activity in the areas

Long-term monitoring and remote sensing reveal waterbird colony collapses with rising lake levels and multiple stressors.

Global climate change is expected to exacerbate existing environmental stressors and increasingly impact biodiversity. While likely widespread, changes in wildlife populations resulting from the interaction of climate change and other environmental stressors remain poorly understood. We investigated climate-mediated lake level fluctuations in coastal wetland ecosystems undergoing shoreline development and species invasions in the Laurentian Great Lakes. We evaluated the potential of multiple stressors to reduce ecological resilience and generate alternative stable states, by examining effects

Cholera.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes the basic epidemiologic, clinical, and microbiologic aspects of cholera, highlights new developments within these areas, and presents strategies for applying currently available tools and knowledge more effectively. RECENT FINDINGS: From 1990 to 2016, the reported global burden of cholera fluctuated between 74,000 and 595,000 cases per year; however, modeling estimates suggest the real burden is between 1.3 and 4.0 million cases and 95,000 deaths yearly. In 2018, the World Health Assembly endorsed a new initiative to reduce cholera deaths by 90% and el
