Human interleukin 4 (IL 4) up-regulates the expression of CD23 on both resting and "in vivo" activated B cells but induces proliferation and/or differentiation only on "in vitro" activated B lymphocytes. The protein of molecular weight about 160 kD (designated LMG160) was isolated from purified low mobility group chromatin proteins. Polyclonal antibody directed against the LMG160 protein in mouse was raised. The specificity of the antibody was determined with the use of ELISA. Using chemical cross-linking procedure followed by immunoprecipitation with the antiLMG160 antibody complex formation with chromatin proteins was demonstrated. Among the proteins that form complexes with LMG160, histones H3, H2A, and H4 were identified (Western blotting technique).

The selective binding of somatostatin-28 (SS-28) to beta cells of hamster insulinoma was characterized using HPLC-purified 125I-[Leu8,D-Trp22,Tyr25]SS-28 or 125I-SS-28. Many applications exist and others are envisioned for the chemical coupling of macromolecules to membrane proteins on the surface of mammalian cells. The ability to use antibody as a means to label and subsequently to follow the distribution of cell surface proteins is reported here. Melphalan resistance developed previously in a human melanoma cell line (MM253) could not be further increased. Cross-resistance was found to nitrogen mustard but not to ultraviolet light radiation. Benzaldehyde-conjugated chitosan (CH-CBA) was synthesized by a coupling reaction between chitosan (CH) and carboxybenzaldehyde (CBA). The pH-sensitive self-cross-linking can be achieved through the Schiff base reaction. The degree of substitution (DS) of CH-CBA was controlled at 1.4-12.7% by optimizing the pH and reagent stoichiometry. The dynamic Schiff base linkages conferred strong shear-thinning and self-healing properties to the hydrogels.
