During a 12-mo period the fluid aspirated from 32 ovarian cystic lesions was assayed for 17 beta-estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), testosterone (T), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). All cysts were subsequently subjected to histologic or cytologic examination. In 84.6% (11/13) of the proven follicular cysts, the E2 content was greater than 100 pg/ml, in 76.9% (10/13) the P content was greater than 13 ng/ml, and in 69% (9/13) the T content was greater than 0.5 ng/ml. In 94.7% (18/19) of the ovarian cysts of other types, the E2 content was less than 100 pg/ml and

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder that results in large kidneys, numerous fluid-filled cysts, and ultimately end-stage kidney disease. PKD is either autosomal dominant caused by mutations in PKD1 or PKD2 genes or autosomal recessive caused by mutations in the PKHD1 or DZIP1L genes. While the genetic basis of PKD is known, the downstream molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways that lead to deregulation of proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation are not completely understood. The Notch pathway plays critical roles during kidney development including directing dif

The utility of X-ray CT for the preoperative differentiation of benign and malignant ovarian tumors was investigated. Preoperative CT findings on 137 cases pathohistologically diagnosed as ovarian tumors, both benign and malignant, were compared. Dermoid cysts (42 cases) showed characteristic CT images and CT numbers, facilitating diagnosis. In CT findings of tumors (95 cases) other than dermoid cysts, (1) 70.8% of cystic tumors with protrusion from the cyst walls, and 92.9% of solid tumors with fluid parts with malignant; (2) 59.3% of tumors whose major axes measured on the CT image were 15 c

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a globally distributed zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, forming fluid-filled cysts in humans and livestock. These cysts consist of three layers: an inner germinal layer and a middle laminar layer of parasitic origin, and an outer adventitial layer derived from the host's immune response. The adventitial layer typically contains immune cells such as T and B lymphocytes, macrophages, and other inflammatory cells. Notably, differences have been reported in the cellular composition of this layer depending on the host species. However, the

Mature teratomas, also known as ovarian dermoid cysts, are benign embryonal tumors that develop slowly. One of the following imaging techniques is commonly employed to evaluate these cysts: transvaginal ultrasound, pelvic ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, or computed tomography. The two surgical methods most frequently used for removing persistent or very large cysts are laparoscopy and laparotomy. A 42-year-old female, who is P3L1D2 with a history of previous cesarean section, presented with an abdominal mass that had been gradually increasing in size over the past five months. She

INTRODUCTION: Cystic Echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, primarily affects the liver and lungs, particularly in endemic regions. While commonly associated with gastrointestinal manifestations, CE can lead to severe complications that necessitate surgical intervention.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old female was referred due to a prolonged history of exertional dyspnea that recently worsened. Imaging studies indicated a large hydatid cyst in the right lobe of the liver and significant pleural effusion. Surgical management was conducted via thoracotomy, facilitating the exci

BACKGROUND: Despite the rarity of epidermoid cysts in the chiasmatic region, their surgical treatment is particularly complicated because of the tendency toward massive dissemination of the epidermoid masses along cerebrospinal fluid pathways and significant deviation of the tumor from the midline.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present work is evaluation of the role of extended transsphenoidal endoscopic endonasal approaches in the surgery of epidermoid cysts.
METHODS: The study included 6 patients with epidermoid cysts in the chiasmatic region who were operated on at the Burdenko Neurosurge

Cerebral parasitic cysts constitute a major problem for livestock. Among these, coenurosis and toxoplasmosis are predominant. Here, a total number of 60 sheep obtained from a private farm in Suez province, Egypt, were examined postmortem to detect visible parasitic cysts, and microscopically to detect small-sized entities. Necropsy revealed bladder-like cysts measuring 0.5-6.5 cm in diameter that were filled with a translucent fluid containing a large number of protoscolices. Accordingly, the cysts were identified as the metacestode Coenurus cerebralis. Among the sheep examined, 11 animals (7

BACKGROUND: Spinal intradural arachnoid cysts are rare outpouchings of arachnoid lining occurring mainly in the thoracic and cervical regions. MRI is considered the diagnostic procedure of choice; however, some arachnoid cysts have been reported to elude diagnosis by MRI due to the similar signal intensity of the cyst and the subarachnoid space.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 41-year-old woman with an intradural arachnoid cyst of the lumbar spinal canal. Diagnostic studies demonstrated a herniated L4-5 disk, which led to two operations. Despite intractable pain postoperatively, the

Grey-scale ultrasonography will detect reliably the presence of clinically significant popliteal cysts, fluid collections which do not fill by arthrography, and will frequently demonstrate ruptured cysts and the soft tissue changes resulting from a recent leak. Forty-eight knees, in 25 patients with popliteal and/or calf pain were examined by ultrasonography followed by arthrography. Popliteal cysts were demonstrated in 40% (19/48) by ultrasound and in 46% (22/48) by arthrogram. For comparison between arthrography and ultrasonography chi2 = 8.58 and contingency coefficient, phi = 0.42 (p less

Proinflammatory cytokines and activated macrophages and T lymphocytes have been detected in peritoneal fluids of women with endometriosis and may impair fertility. Expression of the 60 kDa heat shock protein (hsp60) is one mechanism leading to a localized activation of macrophages and T lymphocytes and cytokine release. Peritoneal fluids, obtained from 68 women undergoing a diagnostic laparoscopy, were assayed for hsp60. As independent evidence of local immune activation, the fluids were analysed for interferon gamma (IFN gamma). Fluids were also tested for antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the presence and quantities of multifunctional cytokines in cyst and ascites fluids obtained from patients with ovarian cancer.
STUDY DESIGN: Cyst and ascites fluids obtained from 35 patients with ovarian epithelial neoplasms were analyzed for the multifunctional cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and interleukin-6. The fluids were classified on the basis of the pathologic diagnosis of the tumor tissue. Data were evaluated by analysis of variance.
RESULTS: The fluids from patients with papillary forms of adenocarcinoma had hig

CASE SUMMARY: A 1.5-year-old male neutered Persian cat was referred for acute deterioration of chronic left head tilt and ataxia. A lateral intraventricular cystic lesion, closely associated with the left choroid plexus, was identified on MRI. The intralesional signal intensity and cytological analysis of the fluid revealed a liquid similar to cerebrospinal fluid. After trepanation, an endoscopic-assisted fenestration and aspiration of the cyst were performed to temporally relieve the high intracranial pressure while waiting for surgical cystoperitoneal shunt placement. Three weeks after surge

BACKGROUND: The structural complexity of terminal myelocystocele (TMC) precludes a recognizable link to spinal cord development and therefore a plausible embryogenetic theory.
OBJECTIVE: To demystify TMC using clinical, imaging, surgical, electrophysiological, and histopathological data and to propose a theory of embryogenesis.
METHODS: Our series consisted of 4 newborns and 6 older children. All had preoperative magnetic resonance imagings and surgical repair of the myelocystocele with electrophysiological monitoring.
RESULTS: TMC can be deconstructed into essential and nonessential featur

Internal auditory canal (IAC) arachnoid cysts are rare lesions that can mimic vestibular schwannomas. A 39-year-old female presented with a 9-year history of left-sided tinnitus and hearing loss. MRI showed an expanding cystic lesion in the IAC with ring enhancement, mimicking vestibular schwannoma. However, complete cerebrospinal fluid signal suppression on FLAIR and no diffusion restriction on DWI suggested an arachnoid cyst. Intraoperative findings revealed a cyst enveloped by thickened arachnoid membrane. The diagnosis remains presumptive based on intraoperative findings, as histopathologi

Congenital pericardial diverticula and cysts are extremely uncommon lesions within the anterior mediastinum. Both lesions derive from the pericardial celom and represent different stages of a common embryogenesis. Initial reports date from the 19th century. Surgical pioneers were Otto Pickhardt, who removed a pericardial cyst at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York in 1931, and Richard Sweet, who accomplished the first resection of a pericardial diverticulum at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1943. These lesions were also called spring water cysts because they usually contain watery, cr

We report the sonographic features of an intracystic papillary carcinoma of the breast presenting as recurrent hemorrhagic cysts following trauma. A 56-year-old woman presented with palpable breast masses after a traumatic event; sonography showed multiple, well-defined, hemorrhagic cysts. Hemorrhagic fluid was evacuated by fine needle aspiration with no residual lesions. Cytology was negative for malignancy. Five months later, the mass reappeared; sonography demonstrated multiple cysts with solid nodules. US-guided core biopsy and surgery revealed invasive papillary carcinoma. We suggest clos

A rare case with intradural-extramedullary cysticercosis is presented here. MR imaging with and without gd-DTPA were performed. There were multiple cysts in the basal cistern, cisterna magna, and cervical subarachnoid space which were isointense with cerebrospinal fluid both on T2- and T1-weighted images. Swelling and increased signal intensity in the cord parenchyma were detected on T2-weighted images. Gadolinium enhanced studies showed rim-shaped enhancement in the cysts and irregular, diffuse enhancement in the meninges.

BACKGROUND: Ganglion cysts are the most common soft-tissue tumors of the hand and wrist, frequently recurring after surgical excision (6%-41%). Open resection is the treatment of choice, yet significant variation persists in techniques from basic stalk resection to tissue window excision and sclerosing agents, with no established optimal approach. We investigated the efficacy of electrocauterization of cyst remnants, based on the premise that scar formation may reduce recurrence.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed 181 patients (189 cysts) undergoing open ganglion excision by 2 sur
