The influence of psychosocial factors on the incidence and evolution of depressive illness is well established. The joint study of different aspects of the psychosocial field involved in the risk of depressive illness substantiated interactions between these various factors, modulating the risk of depression. Several psychosocial models of depression, as Harris and Brown's model, have taken into account those interactions, discriminating vulnerability factors and precipitating factors (stressful life events, lasting difficulties): vulnerability factors, not inducing depression per se, increase

Psychological reactions and their 'hierarchies' regarding the own health status were analysed in a sample of 81 survivors of the Bonn Longitudinal Study on Aging and in different clinical samples (patients suffering from hemophilia, renal failure, heart infarction, stroke, and schizophrenia). The longitudinal analysis of the health-related response hierarchy points to a high degree of consistency of these reactions over time. Comparing the response hierarchies of the aged sample as related to different areas of life stress (such as housing, income, family, health problems), the author finds a

After exposure to a low and high dose dexamethasone regime, 11 of 34 acute psychiatric inpatients demonstrated abnormal dexamethasone suppression characterized by morning and/or mid-afternoon escape from suppression. This abnormality of suppression was found in primary depression, in mania, and in acute schizophrenia. In primary depression, the presence of abnormal dexamethasone suppression failed to discriminate "endogenous" depressed from "other depressed" subjects. Because nonsuppression to a high dose of dexamethasone is also found in patients with ectopic ACTH secretion and in patients wi

Somatosensory inputs are sequentially processed across multiple brain regions via cortico-cortical networks. Our recent magnetoencephalography (MEG) study identified specific beta-frequency cortico-cortical networks involved in tactile two-point discrimination (TPD), including those between primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and superior parietal lobule (SPL), and between S1 and angular gyrus (AG). These findings prompted us to investigate whether modifying these networks could influence TPD. We therefore examined the effects of bifocal beta-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulatio

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate a visual acuity assessment paradigm based on spatial frequency-modulated form discrimination for induced and disease-driven vision loss.
METHODS: The Patterned-Optotype-in-Noise Task (POINT) consisted of arrow-shaped random noise patterns, each with a 1/f2 amplitude spectrum overlaid on a low-pass filtered background. Stimulus difficulty varied logarithmically across 22 levels by adjusting the background cutoff spatial frequency, relative to foreground. Monocular acuity was measured for POINT stimuli and letter optotypes in 20 adults (21-46 years) with 0-4D o

One of the main tasks of the human visual system is to organize the temporal flow of visual events into meaningful patterns. It has been suggested that segregation/integration of continuous visual stimuli relies on temporal windows that are phase-locked to brain oscillations in the alpha frequency range (~10 Hz). From a behavioral point of view, the balance between integration and segregation is reflected in visual temporal acuity: the ability to perceive a small temporal gap between two identical stimuli. Disruption of this balance may lead to impairment of perceptual organization processes.

Remarkable trial-by-trial variability is apparent in cortical responses to repeating stimulus presentations. This neural variability across trials is relatively high before stimulus presentation and then reduced (i.e., quenched) ∼0.2 s after stimulus presentation. Individual subjects exhibit different magnitudes of variability quenching, and previous work from our lab has revealed that individuals with larger variability quenching exhibit lower (i.e., better) perceptual thresholds in a contrast discrimination task. Here, we examined whether similar findings were also apparent in a motion detec

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies have shown that medical student mistreatment and burnout are common. However, few longitudinal data exist to describe how mistreatment and other learning environment experiences are associated with subsequent burnout and other student characteristics.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between mistreatment and perceptions of the learning environment with subsequent burnout, empathy, and career regret among US medical students.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study analyzed data from the 2014-2016 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) M

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex pain condition where the pathophysiological and molecular mechanisms are not fully elucidated. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the plasma proteome profile in women with FM compared to controls. The secondary aim was to investigate if plasma protein patterns correlate with the clinical variables pain intensity, sensitivity, and psychological distress. Clinical variables/background data were retrieved through questionnaires. Pressure pain thresholds (PPT) were assessed using an algometer. The plasma proteome profile of FM (n = 30) and controls (n =

Human adults can typically visually discriminate the faces of unfamiliar individuals accurately, rapidly, and automatically, i.e. even without the explicit intention to do so. Recent studies have used fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) coupled with electroencephalography (EEG) to measure this process with objectivity and high sensitivity during simple non-face related tasks (Liu-Shuang et al., 2014). Here we consider to what extent fast individual face discrimination measured in the human brain with this approach is modulated by a direct face-related task. We recorded 128-channel EEG whil

Our aim is to compare olfactory and gustatory function and food preferences of patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) with controls. We included 22 patients with MCI, 30 patients with AD and 40 controls and assessed olfactory threshold, odor discrimination and odor identification (Sniffin' Sticks), gustatory functioning (Taste Strips), and food preferences (Macronutrient and Taste Preference Ranking Task). Linear regression analyses were used to study associations of five cognitive domains or AD biomarkers with olfactory functioning. Groups did not differ in

BACKGROUND: The temporal processing of sensory information can be evaluated by testing the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT), which is defined as the shortest interstimulus interval needed to recognize two sequential sensory stimuli as separate in time. The STDT requires the functional integrity of the basal ganglia and of the somatosensory cortex (S1). Although there is evidence that time processing is impaired in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), no study has yet investigated STDT in patients with various degree of cognitive impairment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our s

This study explored the modulatory effects of high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) on visual sensitivity during a temporal attention task. We measured sensitivity to different onset asynchronies during a temporal order judgment task as a function of active stimulation relative to sham. While completing the task, participants were stimulated bilaterally for 20 min over either the TPJ or the human middle temporal area. We hypothesized that tRNS over the TPJ, which is critical to the temporal attention network, would selectively increase cortical excitability and induce cog

Between 2000 and 2015, the number of people newly infected with HIV in the Caribbean decreased by 76% and HIV-related deaths by 42%. The number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) increased from near zero to 50% (44% to 57%) in 2015. In many Caribbean countries communities of men-who-have-sex-with-other-men (MSM) have higher incidence and prevalence of HIV. They are often stigmatized and subjected to both social and institutional discrimination. This study compared attitudes of the general public obtained through public opinion polls 2013-2014 towards homosexuals

During decision making, neurons in multiple brain regions exhibit responses that are correlated with decisions. However, it remains uncertain whether or not various forms of decision-related activity are causally related to decision making. Here we address this question by recording and reversibly inactivating the lateral intraparietal (LIP) and middle temporal (MT) areas of rhesus macaques performing a motion direction discrimination task. Neurons in area LIP exhibited firing rate patterns that directly resembled the evidence accumulation process posited to govern decision making, with strong

While perception is recognized as being atypical in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC), the underlying mechanisms for such atypicality are unclear. Here we test the hypothesis that individuals with ASC will show enhanced orientation discrimination compared with neurotypical observers. This prediction is based both on anecdotal report of superior discriminatory skills in ASC and also on evidence in the auditory domain that some individuals with ASC have superior pitch discrimination. In order to establish whether atypical perception might be mediated by an imbalance in the ratio

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) shows neuropathology similar to Alzheimer disease, which presents olfactory impairment. Previous work showed olfactory impairment in DS, but a comprehensive evaluation of olfactory function in DS is lacking.
METHODS: We investigated a large number (n = 56; M = 31, F = 25) DS participants (age range18-57y) using the "Sniffin' Sticks" Extended test. This comprises three subtests (threshold, discrimination, and identification) yielding a global score (TDI) defining normosmia, hyposmia, and functional anosmia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second largest

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold is often prolonged in patients with dystonia. Previous evidence suggested that this might be caused by impaired somatosensory processing in the time domain. Here, we tested if other markers of reduced inhibition in the somatosensory system might also contribute to abnormal somatosensory temporal discrimination in dystonia.
METHODS: Somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold was measured in 19 patients with isolated cervical dystonia and 19 age-matched healthy controls. We evaluated temporal somatosensory inhibition using paired-

We examined the neural response patterns for facial identity independent of viewpoint and for viewpoint independent of identity. Neural activation patterns for identity and viewpoint were collected in an fMRI experiment. Faces appeared in identity-constant blocks, with variable viewpoint, and in viewpoint-constant blocks, with variable identity. Pattern-based classifiers were used to discriminate neural response patterns for all possible pairs of identities and viewpoints. To increase the likelihood of detecting distinct neural activation patterns for identity, we tested maximally dissimilar "

Social and echolocation vocalizations of bats contain different patterns of frequency modulations. An adult bat's ability to discriminate between various FM parameters, however, is not well established. Using changes in heart rate (HR) as a quantitative measure of associative learning, we demonstrate that mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii) can be fear conditioned to linear frequency modulated (FM) sweeps typically centered at their acoustic fovea (approximately 60 kHz). We also show that HR is sensitive to a change in the direction of the conditional frequency modulation keeping all other p
