We report clinical, neuroimaging and immunological findings in seven women with antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) and cerebral ischemia. Since 1987, five women with end-stage cardiomyopathy and a history of treated breast carcinoma have undergone transplantation at our institution. All patients underwent extensive multidisciplinary pretransplantation evaluation to rule out metastatic disease. Disease-free interval before heart transplantation ranged from 5 to 11 years (mean, 7.6 years). Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a commensal of humans and an opportunistic pathogen. It can cause an aggressive form of infective endocarditis in healthy humans akin to Staphylococcus aureus. From January 1988 through October 1997, 167 cardiac transplants were performed. 1246 endomyocardial biopsies (EMBs) from 138 cardiac allograft recipients were investigated and graded according to the Working Formulation (WF) criteria. The specimens were inadequate in 44 EMBs (3.5%), while 598 (48%) showed no rejection.
