BACKGROUND/AIMS: The association between thyroid hormones and arterial stiffness is unclear. In this study, we investigated, for the first time in a large cohort of euthyroid peritoneal dialysis patients, the relationship between thyroid hormone levels and arterial stiffness.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients were enrolled. Serum TSH, free T3 and free T4 levels were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay method. Pulse wave analysis [augmentation index (AIx) and subendocardial viability ratio (SEVR)] were measured to assess arterial stiffness.

OBJECTIVES: To genetically characterize an unusual genotype of Cryptosporidium from the stools of humans with diarrhoea and to identify risk factors in the affected patients.
METHODS: DNA was extracted from human faeces where Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected by light microscopy. Cryptosporidial gene fragments from six different loci were analysed by PCR alone, PCR/RFLP and by DNA sequencing. Oocysts were characterized by light and immunofluorescence microscopy and epidemiological data was collected from the affected patients.

We reviewed the clinical manifestations of 53 episodes of theophylline intoxication in 50 patients over a one year study period, in order to identify the specific features as they presented to the Emergency Department (ED). Using succinylacetone (SA), a metabolite of tyrosine excreted in excess by infants and children with hereditary tyrosinemia and the renal Fanconi syndrome (FS), we have investigated developmentally-related membrane transport events leading to emergence of the generalized renal tubular dysfunction seen in human FS.
