Impact of climate change on agricultural production; Issues, challenges, and opportunities in Asia.

Agricultural production is under threat due to climate change in food insecure regions, especially in Asian countries. Various climate-driven extremes, i.e., drought, heat waves, erratic and intense rainfall patterns, storms, floods, and emerging insect pests have adversely affected the livelihood of the farmers. Future climatic predictions showed a significant increase in temperature, and erratic rainfall with higher intensity while variability exists in climatic patterns for climate extremes prediction. For mid-century (2040-2069), it is projected that there will be a rise of 2.8°C in maximu

Socioeconomic adversity and child health following the COVID-19 pandemic: A convergent integrated mixed-methods review of household and neighbourhood inequalities.

Children experience inequalities in health at household and neighbourhood level, even in wealthy countries. Measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic such as school closures, followed by the cost-of-living crisis, did not affect all children equally. This review aimed to understand the impact of socioeconomic adversity on child health and development following the COVID-19 pandemic. Systematic literature searches used the SPIDER tool to identify studies, and a convergent integrated approach to combine and synthesise quantitative and qualitative data. A mixed methods appraisal tool was used to

Improving early intervention: identifying risk factors for UK military veterans that access military charities-a case-control study and an AI-powered predictive model.

Some veterans face unique physical, mental, and social challenges, leading them to seek assistance from military charities. This case-control study uses data from the MONARCH Study and the tri-service food insecurity study, with the aim to identify key risk factors associated with charity usage among UK veterans. Cases (veterans who accessed charities in 2022) were compared to controls (veterans who did not access charities). Logistic regression and a random forest algorithm were used to identify risk factors for charity use. Several risk factors for charity use were identified: younger age, l…

The impact of climate change on paediatric dentistry.

The effects of global warming and climate change are happening at a faster rate than expected, and they are going to get worse. Global climate change has already started to show the effects on environment-fast melting glaciers, accelerated sea level rise and base shifting of native flora and fauna. There has been an increase in temperature globally with a few countries already showing intense heat waves and extreme cold temperatures. The interrelation between dentistry, environmental impact and human health is still in its nascent stage, but studies in medicine show that the healthcare industr

Modeling the Impact of Nutrition Interventions on Birth Outcomes in the Lives Saved Tool (LiST).

Background: Negative birth outcomes [small-for-gestational age (SGA) and preterm birth (PTB)] are common in low- and middle-income countries and have important subsequent health and developmental impacts on children. There are numerous nutritional and non-nutritional interventions that can decrease the risk of negative birth outcomes and reduce subsequent risk of mortality and growth faltering. Objective: The objective of this article was to review the current evidence for the impact of nutritional interventions in pregnancy [calcium supplementation, iron and folic acid supplementation, multipl

Maternal nutrition among women from Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on Nigeria, and potential implications for pregnancy outcomes among immigrant populations in developed countries.

Pregnant women in countries of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are at risk of poor nutritional status and adverse outcomes as a result of poverty, food insecurity, sub-optimal healthcare facilities, frequent infections and frequent pregnancies. Studies from Nigeria, for example, have revealed a high prevalence of both under- and over-nutrition, as well as nutrient deficiencies, including iron, folate, vitamin D and vitamin A. Subsequently, obstetric complications, including hypertension, anaemia, neural tube defects, night-blindness, low birth weight and maternal and perinatal mortality, are common. …
