Tinea pedis in Korean children.

BACKGROUND: Tinea pedis is an infrequent disease in children before the age of puberty. There are few epidemiologic and clinical data regarding cases of tinea pedis observed in children. Materials and methods We prospectively collected all cases of tinea pedis in children diagnosed during the years 1995-1997. Only those showing a positive result with potassium hydroxide preparation were included in the study. We performed fungal cultures in Sabouraud's agar in all cases to document the etiologic fungi. The clinical characteristics were investigated. RESULTS: A total of 21 children, aged 3 mon

[Mycosis fungoides palmaris et plantaris].

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a low-grade cutaneous T-cell lymphoma characterized by skin-homing CD4- positive helper T cells. Mycosis fungoides palmaris et plantaris is an uncommon variant primarily involving the palms and soles. An 80-year old man presented with hyperkeratotic erythematous palmoplantar changes. Clinical and histopathologic criteria led to the diagnosis mycosis fungoides palmaris et plantaris. Tumor staging using sonography of the abdomen and lymph nodes, chest x-ray and blood examination is recommended, because extracutaneous manifestations may be present.

Fluctuations in the prevalence of chromate allergy in Denmark and exposure to chrome-tanned leather.

BACKGROUND: A recent Danish study showed a significant increase in the prevalence of chromate contact allergy after the mid-1990s, probably as a result of exposure to leather products. OBJECTIVES: To reproduce the results by analysing data from the period 1992-2009 at Odense University Hospital, Denmark. The temporal development in the occurrence of chromate contact allergy and assumed causative exposures were investigated. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patch test data was performed (n = 8483), and medical charts from patients with chromate allergy (n = 231) we

UVA1 phototherapy for cutaneous diseases: an experience of 92 cases in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of UVA1 (340-400 nm) phototherapy were established by studies from European countries. PURPOSE: Evaluate experience with UVA1 phototherapy for patients with cutaneous diseases in the United States. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 92 cases of UVA1-treated cutaneous conditions from four medical centers in the United States was performed. RESULTS: Two-third of the patients showed a fair to good response (26-100% improvement) and one-third of the patients showed a poor response (0-25% improvement). Diseases with a moderate to good response (51-100% impro

Imiquimod cream 5% for recalcitrant cutaneous warts in immunosuppressed individuals.

BACKGROUND: Viral warts may cause significant morbidity in individuals unable to mount an adequate T-helper 1 cell-mediated immune response to human papillomavirus. Imiquimod is a potent inducer of antiviral cytokine activity which has shown significant efficacy in the treatment of genital warts. Similar efficacy in cutaneous warts is not yet established. OBJECTIVES: To assess the response of persistent cutaneous warts to 5% imiquimod cream in immunosuppressed individuals. METHODS: Fifteen immunosuppressed patients with warts on the hands and/or feet present for more than 18 months, which ha

Detection of human papillomavirus type 60 in plantar cysts and verruca plantaris by the in situ hybridization method using digoxigenin labeled probes.

BACKGROUND: Since 1987, many cases have been reported in which human papillomavirus (HPV) could be associated with epidermoid cysts of the palms and soles. In 1989, the HPV found in an induced epidermoid cyst was cloned and named HPV 60. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to examine the relationship of HPV 60 to plantar cysts. METHODS: Ten cases of plantar cysts and two cases of verruca plantaris containing single inclusion bodies were obtained by biopsy and examined by the in situ hybridization (ISH) method with a digoxigenin labeled HPV 60 DNA probe. RESULTS: Six of ten cases were found to have c

Practical aspects of bacterial skin infections in children.

Bacterial skin infections are a common reason for children to be examined by a pediatrician. Streptococci and staphylococci are responsible for the great majority of the infections. Because of the variety of lesions produced by these bacteria, there is support for dividing impetigo into "traditional" crusted and bullous forms. Two important forms of cellulitis--facial and periorbital--have potential for serious systemic consequences. The bacterial etiology and treatment of cellulitis, animal bites, and puncture wounds of the foot require special attention for successful outcome.

[Onychomycosis: multicentre epidemiological, clinical and mycological study].

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis accounts for up to 50% of all nail disorders. They can be caused by: yeasts, dermatophytes and non-dermatophyte moulds. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: A multicentre study designed to determine the prevalence, mycological test results, aetiological agents, and clinical presentation of onychomycosis was carried out. All fingernail and toenail samples taken during a one year period at 9 diagnostic centres were included. RESULTS: A total of 5,961 samples were analysed, of which 82.3% were from toenails and 17.7% from fingernails. The mean age of the patients was 49.7 years, an

Fungal foot infections in patients with diabetes mellitus--results of two independent investigations.

In diabetic patients, mycotic infections may increase the risk of developing diabetic foot syndrome. However, little data are available on the prevalence of fungal foot infections in patients with diabetes. In a first study published using data obtained during a conference attended by patients with long-term diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1), 78/95 patients (82.1%) showed probable pedal fungal infections, of which 84.6% (66/78) were mycologically confirmed by direct microscopy and/or culture. The dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum was the most common (69.2% of isolates). Significant correlation was

Predisposing risk factors for palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia when using liposomal doxorubicin to treat recurrent ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) was introduced to reduce the adverse effect of doxorubicin in treating recurrent ovarian cancer. We sought to characterize the efficacy and adverse-effect profile of PLD in different doses and to evaluate predictive factors of palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE). METHODS: Patients with recurrent ovarian, primary peritoneal, and fallopian tube carcinoma treated with single-agent PLD between 1996 and 2006 at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center were retrospectively identified, and charts were reviewed for patient demographics,

A phase II, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of VT-1161 oral tablets in the treatment of patients with distal and lateral subungual onychomycosis of the toenail.

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is a fungal disease that affects the fingernails and toenails and is predominantly caused by dermatophytes. VT-1161 is a novel inhibitor of fungal CYP51 through the inhibition of lanosterol demethylase, and has demonstrated potent activity against Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of four dosing regimens of orally administered VT-1161 compared with placebo in patients with moderate-to-severe distal and lateral subungual onychomycosis of the toenail. METHODS: This was a phase II, randomized, double-bl

S2k guidelines for skin and soft tissue infections Excerpts from the S2k guidelines for "calculated initial parenteral treatment of bacterial infections in adults - update 2018".

These first German S2k guidelines for bacterial skin and soft tissue infections were developed as one chapter of the recommendations for "calculated initial parenteral treatment of bacterial infections" issued under the auspices of the Paul-Ehrlich Society, of which the main part is presented here. Well-calculated antibiotic therapies require precise diagnostic criteria. Erysipelas is defined as non-purulent infection considered to be caused by beta-hemolytic strepto-cocci. It is diagnosed clinically by its bright-red erythema and early fever or chills at disease onset. Penicillin is the treat

Efinaconazole solution 10% for treatment of toenail onychomycosis in Latino patients.

Onychomycosis is a common progressive fungal infection of the nail bed, matrix, or plate leading to destruction and deformity of the toenails and fingernails. The prevalence of onychomycosis is increasing in the United States, particularly in the growing population of Latino patients. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of efinaconazole solution 10% in Latino patients with onychomycosis. Once-daily application of efinaconazole solution 10% may be an effective topical option for treatment of onychomycosis in this patient population.

The Presence of an Air Gap Between the Nail Plate and Nail Bed in Onychomycosis Patients: Treatment Implications for Topical Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Transungual nail penetrance has traditionally been considered to be the only route of delivery for topical antifungals in onychomycosis. Subungual penetrance may be an alternate route of delivery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of efinaconazole vehicle solution to reach the site of toenail onychomycosis through application to the hyponychium or hyponychium and dorsal nail surface, and assess the impact of the air gap between the nail plate and nail bed. METHODS: Twenty-three participants with moderate to severe, mycologically-confirmed onychomycosis were enrolled (mean age, 4

A Retrospective Review of Diagnostic Testing for Onychomycosis of the Foot.

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail that can be caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, or nondermatophyte molds. To diagnose onychomycosis, a clinician must use the patient's history, physical findings, and diagnostic testing, which can include calcofluor white/potassium hydroxide (KOH) mount, fungal culture (FC), and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain. Some insurance companies require authorization for antifungal medication and request laboratory results to confirm infection. We sought to compare the reliability of KOH, PAS, and FC diagnostic results for confirmation of fungal
