Photon-counting CT angiography in a multi-trauma patient with bilateral pulmonary embolism: combined vascular mapping and quantitative iodine-density assessment prior to scalp reconstruction: case report.

Background: Photon-counting detector CT (PCCT) combines high-resolution anatomical and spectral imaging by directly counting individual x-ray photons and discriminating their energies. Its role in surgical planning in complex multi-trauma with concurrent pulmonary embolism remains undefined. Case Presentation: A 58-year-old previously healthy woman was entrapped by a cement mixer, sustaining traumatic scalp avulsion (20 × 20 cm) with exposed skull, depressed right parietal fractures, subdural and epidural hematoma, right 3rd-9th rib fractures, mid-shaft radius and ulna fractures with tendon an

Achilles Tendon Laceration and Rupture in Dromedary Camels (Camelus dromedarius): Clinical, Radiographic, Ultrasonographic, and Anatomical Findings.

This study aimed to describe the anatomical composition of the Achilles tendon in dromedary camels and to characterize the clinical, radiographic, and ultrasonographic features of tendon laceration and rupture. Six pelvic limbs from an adult healthy Mejhem camel were dissected following fixation in 10% formaldehyde. Additionally, 19 camels with confirmed Achilles tendon injuries were evaluated clinically and by imaging. Anatomically, the tendon is a composite structure formed by the semitendinosus, gastrocnemius (medial and lateral heads), and superficial digital flexor muscles, arranged in su

Assessment of ergonomic exposure, work-related occupational injuries, and prevention: Child work in the brickfield industry in India.

Child labor is an infraction of fundamental human rights, and it prevents the children's physical, psychosocial, and psychological development. In India, children have been working in different unorganized sectors as paid laborers. Children were found performing a fair amount of manual, rigorous tasks in the brickfield industry due to socioeconomic disadvantages. Child brickfield workers suffered from musculoskeletal pain and injuries due to working with a heavy physical workload, which hampers the overall quality of life. A study had been conducted among these child brickfield laborers from I

Traumatic chiasmopathy following mild trauma in a patient with thyroid orbitopathy.

PURPOSE: Traumatic injury to the optic chiasm is rare and most frequently caused by high-velocity head trauma. It classically results in bitemporal hemianopsia and often presents in conjunction with multiple other traumatic injuries, such as skull fractures and cerebrospinal fluid leaks. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with pre-existing thyroid orbitopathy who struck her forehead after a fall from standing height. OBSERVATIONS: This patient suffered immediate profound unilateral vision loss from traumatic optic neuropathy and possible optic nerve avulsion. The fellow eye manifested

Above-the-knee replantation in a child: a case report with a 24-year follow-up.

Replantation of an amputated limb is generally contraindicated in crushing and traction injuries. Injury to muscle tissue and skin also creates difficulties in coverage, and bony fractures may shorten limb length which can impede lower extremity function. Numerous cases have been reported on the successful replantation of the lower limb in children; however, review of previous English literature has documented only very few replantation at the thigh level, and those with severe crushing injury resulted in subsequent amputation. We report a case of successful thigh-level replantation in a 3-yea

Results of fracture-dislocation of interphalangeal treatment with volar buttressing hook plating techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) is one of the joints exposed to upper limb injury. The dorsal fracture-dislocations of the PIP is a common injury. Treatment of cases with small avulsed bone fragments is challenging. Stable fixation with rapid recovery is important in these patients. HYPOTHESIS: Volar buttress plating a new technique in treatment of the dorsal proximal interphalangeal joint fracture dislocations but the results of it is unknown. METHODS: In this case series, 21 patients with dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal were studied. We used

Awareness of Dental Trauma Management among School Teachers of Kannur, Kerala, India.

INTRODUCTION: Dental trauma can overtake dental caries and periodontal disease as the most significant threat to dental health among young people. The prognosis of traumatized teeth depends on prompt and appropriate treatment. The role of school teachers in the prevention of traumatic dental injuries is a topic that has received a great deal of attention in recent years. However, studies conducted in different regions of the world have demonstrated that teachers and other lay people's knowledge about traumatic dental injuries is inadequate and their behavior does not contribute to reduce the s

Traumatic major muscle loss in the upper extremity: reconstruction using functioning free muscle transplantation.

Traumatic crushing injuries of the muscle compartments will occasionally cause major muscle or muscle-group loss with concomitant irreparable nerve injuries. Those cases with or without the availability of local muscle transfers form another indication for functioning free muscle transplantation (FFMT). The authors report their experience with 20 FFMTs in 14 patients with severe muscle loss from 1986 to 1996. They were selected because all their major muscle loss was primarily due to muscle avulsion, avascularity, and necrosis, but not secondarily due to nerve injury or ischemic injury. The mo

Acute, isolated and unstable syndesmotic injuries are frequently associated with intra-articular pathologies.

PURPOSE: Although simultaneous arthroscopy for the surgical treatment of acute isolated, unstable syndesmotic injuries has been recommended, little knowledge is present about the actual frequency of intra-articular pathologies for this injury. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and severity of intra-articular pathologies detected during arthroscopy and their subsequent treatment in acute isolated, unstable syndesmotic injuries. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients treated by arthroscopic-assisted stabilization for acute isolated, syndesmotic instability was pe

Integrating engineering principles into the medico-legal investigation of a rare fatal rollover car accident involving complex dynamics.

Rollover car accidents can be the result of forceful steering or hitting an obstacle that acts like a ramp. Mortality from this type of car accident is particularly high, especially when occupants are thrown out of the vehicle. We report a case of a 67-year-old man who died after a rollover accident that occurred when he was driving a car equipped with a glass moonroof. He was found inside his car with his safety belt correctly fastened and the roof shattered. At autopsy, a wide avulsion injury of the head was observed, which was associated with an atlanto-axial dislocation and full-thickness

Common peroneal nerve injury during varicose vein operation.

Common peroneal nerve (CPN) injury produces considerable and serious disability. The nerve is most frequently damaged as a result of trauma (sharp or blunt, traction, fracture, laceration, and avulsion). Less often iatrogenic injury is the cause of damage (application of tight plaster, retraction injury, division during operation). Even rarer is the complete or partial division of CPN during varicose vein operations. In the UK, on average 34 patients every year begin legal action against their medical attendants in connection with the treatment of varicose veins, on a background of an estimate

Posterior trans-septal portal for arthroscopic surgery of the knee joint.

The authors introduce a safe arthroscopic technique of making a portal through the posterior septum of the knee joint, posterior to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). This posterior trans-septal portal makes it possible for the arthroscope or the working instruments inserted through the posteromedial portal to reach the posterolateral compartment. With this portal, complete arthroscopic visualization of the posterior compartment and easier arthroscopic procedures for the posterior compartment of the knee joints are possible, including the posterior and posterosuperior aspect of the both fe
