BACKGROUND: Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) from repetitive hand hygiene is the primary reason for compliance failure among health care workers (HCWs). Chronic ICD has implications for infection control because higher bacterial counts are associated with increased skin compromise. Guidelines recommend lotions/creams to lessen irritation. We evaluated the effects of 5 to 10 daily applications of a test cream (A, glove and chlorhexidine gluconate compatible) and current lotions/creams (B) compared with a control of normal skin care.

A 74-year-old patient, suffering for 20 years from polycythemia rubra vera, was treated with hydroxyurea for 2 years. Intensive xerosis (ichthyosis-like) and violaceous papules on the dorsal hand surfaces were observed. There was also reddish purple periorbital erythema resembling "heliotrope erythema". BACKGROUND: Lichen planus (LP) is a condition with many clinical variants that can be quite varied in their presentation.
OBJECTIVE: We report a case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with a very unusual palmoplantar eruption characterized by violaceous pustule-like papules that was subsequently diagnosed as LP.

Persistent post-occupational dermatitis is a phenomenon that is well-recognized by occupational dermatologists, but there have been few studies on it. A study was conducted to determine whether fungal culture results in cases of suspected onychomycosis differ depending on the location from which the specimen is obtained. Specimens were taken from the nail plate, subungual debris, and nail bed in 30 patients with clinical evidence of onychomycosis. Cultures from the subungual debris were more likely to be positive for dermatophytes, nondermatophytic molds, and yeasts than were cultures from the deeper nail bed or nail plate.

We describe the cases of three hospital nurses who presented eczematous lesions on the hands and eyelids. They worked in surgery department or in post anaesthesia recovery room, all preparing syringes of Pro-Dafalgan (propacetamol: parenteral paracetamol form). They were not sensitive to oral paracetamol or occupational products and latex. During week-end or holidays when they stopped handling Pro-Dafalgan, the eczema recovered but relapsed on working. A few cases are described in the literature so precautions begin to be preconized for healthcare workers but they are not usually in practice.

BACKGROUND: Fragrance allergy is the most common cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis. Many occult sources of fragrance exist. Those which cause the most concern are some "fragrance-free" products that contain fragrance raw ingredients. Thus, the very patients requiring fragrance-free items may be exposed to potential perfume allergens or cross-reactors in seemingly safe products.
