Exchange transfusion (ECT) has an important role in preventing kernicterus in the treatment of indirect hyperbilirubinemia of the newborn. In present study, the etiology of hyperbilirubinemia and complications of ECT were studied over a five-year period in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. We describe our experience of 89 ECTs performed from 2003-2008 in 79 newborns with hyperbilirubinemia. An outbreak of rubella in a large metropolitan hospital is described. Nineteen cases among employees and three secondary cases in family members occurred. Nosocomial cases occurred among the 3,900 employees of an adult medical-surgical unit where a voluntary program of rubella immunization was in effect. In a study comparing the virus load and immune reaction between patients with primary and secondary dengue-2 (DEN-2) infections in a hospital-based analysis, we found that 40.7% (55/135) of the 135 patients had secondary DEN-2 infection following a DEN-2 outbreak in southern Taiwan.
